Resources for Yoga Teachers: Support Groups

15. Yoga Teachers Support Group (on Facebook)

The Yoga Teachers Facebook Group boasts a membership of nearly 40k yoga teachers and is a great source for connecting to other yoga instructors and studio owners.

It’s a closed group for Yoga Teachers and Yoga teacher trainees only. The group was started so that Yoga Teachers could connect on an open forum.

So if that sounds like you,  jump on in and use this group to:

  • start a discussion
  • facilitate a conversation
  • ask a question so that other yoga teachers can answer and support you
  • advance your relationships with Yoga Teachers from around the world

16. Yoga Teacher Resource Community (on Facebook)

The Yoga Teacher Resource Community Facebook group aims to support yoga instructors in several key areas:

  • in the classroom
  • in living their yoga
  • in their personal yoga practice
  • in their yoga business.

Topics on the forum include

  • how to make email newsletters
  • finding insurance
  • navigating social media
  • accommodating the new yoga student

The administrators share conversations about business and teaching-related themes with practicable tips to address the challenges that are unique to yoga teachers.

They also offer free mini-trainings on themes such as

  • time-management
  • cultural appropriation
  • healthy boundaries for teachers

And the administrators of this group also have a podcast! Worth diving into everything offered here.

17. Anatomy Gurus Group  (on Facebook)

The Anatomy Gurus is another private Facebook group just for yoga teachers. Despite its name, the group isn’t just for those who are already “anatomy geeks” (though you are welcome!,) but it’s also for those who left their yoga teacher training still a bit mystified by biomechanics, alignment, and anatomy.

What a helpful niche!

The group is facilitated by a trained physiotherapist who offers deep dives via Facebook live videos that break-down alignment and anatomy considerations for specific yoga poses.

The facilitator’s specialty is stabilizing hypermobile yoga practitioners to reduce the risk of injury and keep yogis practicing asana longer, but discussion topics relate to all things anatomy.

Group members often post both teaching and personal questions related to specific yoga poses that are answered by other group members and often by the physiotherapist administrator herself.

Time to dig into those resources and start learning! Hope the ideas mentioned here get you on the path of successfully pursuing your dreams :)

yoga biz Archives | YogaKids

by Julie Pate

Teaching yoga has many rewards, but it can be lonely at times if you haven’t yet cultivated a supportive community. Many YogaKids Teachers travel from studio to studio. We’re usually the only adult in the room and, while teaching in schools, we are usually the only yoga teacher on staff. Having a community of support is vital for a teacher’s continued growth and success.

RESEARCH ON CONNECTIONS

When we make a positive social connection, the pleasure-inducing hormone oxytocin is released into our bloodstream, immediately reducing anxiety and improving concentration and focus. In a study appropriately titled “Very Happy people,” researches sought out the characteristics of the happiest 10% among us. There was one characteristic that distinguished the happiest 10% from everybody else; the strength of their social relationships. Social support was a far greater predictor of happiness than any other factor — more than income, job status, age gender, or race.

BENEFITS OF BEING PART OF A LIKE-MINDED COMMUNITY OF YOGA TEACHERS

  • You can share lesson or class plans.
  • You can share teaching skills and current research in the field of yoga.
  • You can offer support if you are trying something new and out of your comfort zone, such as teaching a new demographic or breaking into a new location or market.
  • You can offer business support on such topics as pricing, insurance requirements and marketing.
  • You can substitute for each other’s classes.
  • You can be referred to new teaching opportunities and help promote one another.

TEACHERS FORUM

In the YogaKids community, we have a very active Teachers Forum where teachers from all over the world come together and enrich, motivate, and inspire each other. For instance, Clare, a teacher from New Jersey just logged on and asked for classroom management ideas for her active class of preschoolers. Within 24 hours, she had 8 responses from yoga teachers, classroom teachers and even a therapist. Clare could not have researched this topic and gotten better information. What can you do in your area to cultivate a connection similar to the YogaKids support system? You can join LinkedIn, or start a private Facebook forum and ask yoga teachers to join.

HOST A TEACHERS CLASS

Teach a class specifically for teachers and invite other yogis. Share your expertise, training and enthusiasm for yoga. Ask a different teacher to present different topics of interest to the group at each meeting.

SOCIALIZE

Plan inspirational social outings. Recently, a group of YogaKids teachers met up in Chicago and enjoyed a vegetarian meal followed by a Kirtan (chanting hymns or mantras to the accompaniment of instruments). Being around like-minded people offers a fresh perspective on life and livelihood. Other social events our Chicago group has attended include gong healings, arco yoga workshops, and spa nights. Host an event, invite all the Yogis you know, and pass the coordinating job onto another participant for the next event. A small amount of organization and follow through will result in many fun, rewarding events for all.

FIND A MENTOR

Find a mentor or professional guide. In the YogaKids program we have a professionally trained mentoring community of yoga teachers, OTs, PTs, and professional educators. This team regularity holds informative webinars, submits articles on a wide variety of topics, posts inspirational educational content to our private forum, and holds monthly team calls. To be able to connect with such a diverse, professional group is extremely valuable to our community. To form your own connections, look to teacher training schools for mentorship opportunities. Many senior teachers are willing and eager to guide a junior teacher on her path to greatness.

ATTEND A TEACHERS RETREAT

A yoga retreat can be a time of renewal, growth, connection. Practice, socialize and interact with a group of like-minded teachers and yoga practitioners often at beautiful, exotic locations. Often connections made on retreats last long after check out and these connections can cultivate and grow even over long distances to become part of your active teaching community.

Sharing passion for your yoga career can be a very rewarding and fulfilling experience. As poet Donna Favors says, Life has taught me that respect, caring and love must be shared, for it’s only through sharing that friendships are born. Here is hoping you make beautiful connections.

I am far from thinking that I can protect someone from his mistakes, but perhaps reading this text will start a certain process in the reader’s head as a result of which it will be easier to realize their own mistakes .

Fraud is a crime that consists in stealing someone else's property or acquiring the right to someone else's property by deceit or breach of trust.

Any swindle is a swindle, which, unlike robbery or theft, does not involve physical violence when committing it. The victim of fraud, as a rule, herself voluntarily gives the value to the fraudster. In a sense, this is an exchange situation in which one party (as a result of deception) receives not what it expects. It is important to understand that such a situation is built by both participants. No one can cheat you in the game of thimbles if you refuse to play it. And of course you will not lose money on a pyramid scheme if you do not participate in it.

What is Fraud in yoga?
In our case, this is a breach of trust. A newly minted adept wants to get a certain product called “yoga”, but receives something “other”. Let's leave the question of price aside. Everyone pays for their own toys, but how to understand the quality of the goods?
If you don't have a very good idea of what "it" looks like and are ready to believe the "specialist", then you get a classic situation. A bad penknife is sold to someone who doesn't know what a good one looks like.

So advice number one. He's the main one.

Before doing yoga, find out what it is. Learn from several independent sources. It's easier than it looks. Currently, there are practically no restrictions on information. Start with a general encyclopedic dictionary. Take a look at scientific publications on the subject. Why scientific? Yes, because they write (at least they try to write) fundamentally verifiable information. Consequently, the need to believe the word of the dear uncle is reduced.

From there you will learn some facts:
- Yoga is an ancient thing and has come down to us in two ways in the form of traditions and in the form of texts. Both paths may contain errors. Some of the information could be lost, and the other is hidden under the latest additions.
- The practice of yoga is multi-staged. Different sources list different numbers of steps, but practice should in principle have several aspects.
- As a result of practice, human health improves, some ill-defined abilities may appear.
- Practice takes years and requires consistency and perseverance.
- The share of asceticism and non-acquisitiveness is inherent in yogis as a class.
- General calm too.

Yes, yes. There will be some other conclusions, but I specifically highlighted the most obvious ones so as not to get involved in disputes. You are free to add your own results.

After you have more or less understood the essence of the subject, go and meet the teachers. You just need to check their teaching with the criteria. And then there is ...

Tip number two.
When evaluating a teacher, look first of all at his students. It's simple and logical. When you hire an employee, what are you looking at? To his job. A teacher's job is the students. You need to look at them, not at the teacher. As a result of following the teachings, you will become like them, and not like the teacher. If you can’t communicate with students, this is a bad sign.

Questions to be answered
1. Experience of students. Since yoga is a long-term thing, the result is better seen on long-term practitioners. How long, on average, does a person spend in this tradition and where does he go then/what does he look like? If the old students have all disappeared somewhere, and those that remain look clearly inadequate, then this is a very bad sign.
2. What do they have in common? If students acquire some common features, then this is either the result of practice or the result of selection. It's a good idea to ask them if they had this trait before. For example, if everyone sits in a lotus and, when asked, they say that they could always do this, then there is no reason to believe that the system leads to an increase in flexibility. (Whether to consider the increase in flexibility as a criterion for yoga, you should have decided at the last stage).
3. How independent are they from the teacher? Yoga work is mostly personal. Yes, at first the student does what they say, but as experience accumulates, his dependence on the teacher should decrease. If it doesn't, it's bad.
4. How homogeneous is the age and sex composition of the groups? Yes, there are local peculiarities, but if mostly old maids or strong young boys go to work, there is reason to think. There shouldn't be extreme variations.

Tip number three.
You also need to look at the teacher
Test questions:
1. Who is your real teacher? If the classes are taught by the third assistant of the junior guard of the harem of His Holiness, and the Great Himself is considered the teacher, this is bad.
2. Does the atmosphere change when he enters the class? If so, how? Well, of course it changes, otherwise it is not clear what he is doing there at all. But the nature of these changes... I would prefer a teacher in whose presence my understanding of the subject becomes clearer. But here it is clear that everyone chooses.
3. Is the teacher available for communication? Does it answer questions directly or give meaningless answers? Are you afraid to admit the incompleteness of your knowledge? If he knows everything and about everyone, we say goodbye. Well, if you can see him once a year, and ask a question even less often, we leave right away.
4. Does he himself follow the principles he proclaims? It would not be bad to compare behavior in public and in everyday life. As soon as we hear that he is enlightened and he can do what you can’t, we turn around and head to the exit with a brisk step.

But what about teaching? Is it the main thing?
Yes, we got to him.

Tip number four.
Look at the teaching.
Questions.
1. How are the results described? All promising clairvoyance and superpowers in 8-10 weeks go clearly where. Enrichment tomorrow follows them and does not turn anywhere. Energy in just 15 sessions - there too. Eternal life and personal acquaintance with the hierarchs of all things... well, you understand...
2. What aspects are included in the practice? A situation where only one stage is included in the practice should be avoided, especially if it requires preparation. For example, everyone immediately learns to meditate or sing mantras, and everything else is discarded. An option is when everyone does asanas, and other steps seem to be somewhere over the horizon, but there are no real practitioners and criteria for readiness for these steps. In yoga, all steps are important and they are practiced in real time. The most difficult case is bhaktas. Due to the lack of experience, I can not advise anything about their activities.
3. Are there verifiable criteria for success? There are outward signs of yogis in the texts. If he says that you can’t see anything, there’s a catch somewhere nearby. If they promise that you will see prana in the future - too.
4. Is independent practice encouraged? If the practice is only in group classes, the result will be doubtful due to the presence of the effect of the company.
5. Does the organization claim all of your time? The worst thing is if there is little practice, but a lot of social work.
6. Is there a requirement to limit social contacts outside the organization? Well, like: "wife / husband / children / relatives interfere with spiritual growth, you need to take them to the clinic for experiments." This is not our method.
7. How developed is the theoretical base? Yoga teaching is ancient and does not contain complex ideas about the world. If the world is ruled by alien titans from outer space, opposing multi-armed demons, something is not right here. Similarly, if prana flows through many thousands of hopes, forming along the way bizarre squiggles, described in detail in volumes 116-128 of the writings of the first patriarch, who personally appeared in the flesh of Swami Byhttrinukolapshuuu (in the world to Kozlov Ivan Savelyevich) and dictated these compositions for 28 nights of vigils on Mount Sumer.

Tip number five.
Look closely at the organization. It is clear that in our world nothing is free. But still.
1. What is the result of the organization as a whole? The rule here is purely Indian. If it seems to you that the goal of the organization is to cut down more dough, then this is so.
2. Is the price of the lessons reasonable?
3. Are donations collected and in what form?
4. Do adepts use free labor?
5. Where do they get their main income from? Pick income - expense. If there is a big shortage, then who pays the difference?
6. Are they encouraged to recruit new members? This is a special item. If the position of a person in an organization is determined by the number of people involved there, this is a 100% pyramid.
7. How do you treat a newcomer? You came and everyone is happy to see you. Polls. Why did it happen?

Maybe I forgot something - add it.

Distance learning is possible - it takes place in the format of live online broadcasts on a special platform that allows direct communication between the teacher and students. Recording of classes is not possible and prohibited. The training is closed, and is available only to members of the online group: a link to enter is sent before the lesson. The YTTC-200 (Yoga Teaching Training Course, 200 hours) international educational standard for yoga teacher training includes 100 hours of class and 100 hours of self-study. These are the norms established by the international yoga institutes.

The program of the School of Yoga Instructors complies with both the Russian and the international standard of professional education (“an hour” in educational institutions is an academic hour) - 144 hours in the classroom, but in fact - 152 hours, because before classes, we additionally conduct morning classes with explanations for those who wish (as a result, the program as a whole is 252 hours).

The program of the School of Yoga Instructors not only meets all Russian and international standards, but also exceeds them. This allowed us to expand the range of material given in the classroom. Evidence of the quality of the training program is recognition and registration in international yoga organizations, which gives our graduates the opportunity to receive international diplomas without additional exams and get into the registries of the largest international yoga organizations - the International Yoga Alliance and the Yoga Alliance USA.

Online learning reviews

Sergey, good afternoon again!

I would like to share my impressions.

If at first I had doubts, now I can say with confidence that I am happy to study at this School!

Each teacher is unique. It is evident that they want to share knowledge and present it as accessible as possible. The practices of Svetlana Artisevich and Nikolai Bodnaruk are simply incredible! Despite the fact that we see them online, their energy is felt, they attract. I think that I will go to Svetlana for women's practices later)

Olga Polushina simply brilliantly explains and rebuilds asanas, she feels all of us so much, even through a computer. Listening to Lyudmila Silaeva, everything falls into place, I'm not sure that I can explain it this way, but it's incredibly interesting! Anna Fedaka, Mira, Anna Kostina are so interesting and competent!

In general, the learning process is excellent! A lot of information, of course, it needs time, but I think everything will settle down, and this is just the beginning of a long journey.

Online learning has many advantages (no need to go anywhere, more time left, people from anywhere can study). And, as it turned out, even yoga can be practiced online)) Of course, sometimes you want live communication, especially in adjusting asanas, but this is not a big problem.

In general, I am satisfied, I got a lot of knowledge, learned a lot about myself and I really like this way. I think that in a month, as you said, we won't recognize ourselves))

Thank you all very much!

~ Olga Tikhonova,
impressions after two weeks

I want to add to the review that I wrote)

Online training in my opinion was worthy! And in fact, the advantage is that there is no feeling of embarrassment, comparison with others, there is me and the voice of the Teacher! The teachers explain in such detail and subtly that you begin to feel their presence!) Another advantage of distance learning is that a person from anywhere in the world can study with you! The only downside is that from time to time there may be problems with the Internet, both for students and teachers, and freezes begin, but during the course there were sooo few such problems.

So my training in the Yoga Federation of Russia is coming to an end, and this is even sad. I want to express my immense gratitude to each teacher and, of course, to Sergey Ivanovich!

Due to the current situation, our training took place in an online format and, to be honest, I could hardly imagine how it would be. I have something to compare with, tk. I started teaching in person and, of course, I am very glad that I had the opportunity to personally see the teachers. But when online learning began, I was even more delighted, for me there are many advantages in this format. You don’t waste time and energy on the road, you hear the teacher loudly and clearly (in the hall, when there was a large group, and you didn’t have time to take a closer seat, it wasn’t always well audible), more attention is paid to each student, Olga looked after everyone at the adjustments and corrected, you can always ask a question, there is no risk of getting a heel in the nose from another student while doing the asana 🙂

And of course, the presence of Sergei at the lectures makes me very happy! In general, I think that we are very lucky to study online! I plan to continue my education in the Federation on other courses, and I would very much like to continue in this format. If someone doubts, I advise you not to wait, and not to waste time, but to start learning. Thanks again! You are best!

I would like to share my happiness, joy that I did not back down before the circumstances and decided to take the Hatha Yoga basic course, even if online. By the end of the first lesson, I even forgot about it and didn’t remember it anymore, because. didn't feel a big difference. On the contrary, there was enough attention to my person. The feeling that I was trained individually. And the practical lessons were so detailed and understandable that there could be no mistakes. Never before in my life have there been so many wonderful meetings with people who are very different, but equally amazingly interesting, so real, inspired. Worried on the other side of the screen, our teachers-mentors, very interesting, accessible and carefully shared their knowledge and skills with us!

I would like to express gratitude to our Teachers, bow to their wisdom, diligence, patience, enthusiasm and dedication to their work. Thanks to you, I decided to change my own life and start making efforts to change mine and the life around me for the better. Namaste 🙏

~ Sincerely,
Natalya Khabush

Due to the severe situation of the pandemic, our full-time education was transferred to distance learning. I think that many did not imagine how everything would happen in general, because such a practice as yoga, in itself, requires tactile contact, personal presence and energy exchange, and here there is a whole training and, moreover, remotely.

But no one was confused, it was evident and felt that the teachers quickly transformed everything, prepared and adapted the course. Therefore, a huge plus for mobility and flexibility!)

At the beginning of the training it was shy and unusual, I myself am a modest person)) But after two or three classes we got to know each other, and such a warm and friendly atmosphere was created!

And the professionalism of teachers simply works wonders! All information is so clearly structured that everything becomes crystal clear and understandable, and lectures and practices were supported by inspiring life stories, personal examples and thoughts.

At the end of the course, I realized that these three weeks I lived as if in a camp! We woke up together at the same time, did exercises, wished each other good morning...

The impressions from the training were very warm! I will definitely recommend your School to acquaintances and friends who decide to plunge headlong into such a unique direction as Yoga!

Reviews about the course (training in the yoga center)

I'd like to leave your feedback. I am very grateful to Sergey Repin for creating the amazing School of Yoga Instructors, studying in which, as if from a caterpillar, you smoothly turn into a beautiful, light, kind, joyful butterfly with correct, competent ideas about yoga and Pilates. And I wish the school continuous development and prosperity. Thanks to all the teachers, they seem to see through the students...
Thanks to Olga Polushina for showing interest in Iyengar’s teachings and for the phrase “I will avenge socks”, after which I took off my yoga slippers, which I always practiced in, and threw them into the trash can on the way home, I’m sure, with an interesting expression faces. And after this event, personal practice changed.
Thanks to Svetlana Artisevich for the magical, divine practice and meditation, which gives confidence in one's abilities and joy from everything that happens around.
to Nikolai - for the right attitude for me to yoga, important and firm words regarding injury safety and moral and ethical principles of yoga practitioners. If you have been doing asanas with incorrect alignment for several years, this will lead to disability. This understanding will stay with me forever.
Thank you world for an example of a kind and caring attitude towards each student. Thank you Irochka for your Pilates knowledge and responsibility. Thanks to all the teachers, whom I did not mention, for their knowledge and personal experience, who care about what will stay with us inside for many years.

~ Ksenia Aleksandrova

Thank you very much for teaching Hatha Yoga course!
For the teachers who gave us excellent knowledge, for the fact that you created the Yoga Federation of Russia, where they give true knowledge!
In general, I would stay in your Federation to live . ..)), it's nice to be with like-minded people ... but for now I'll just come to classes))

~ Karina Kasimova

The experience gained is colossal, unusual, incomparable! Much has been experienced, rethought and felt during these 3 weeks. The most important thing is that the plan has come true: the right direction of the Path has been set, tools have been given to help move forward, faith in yourself and your strength has appeared Thank you very much for this!

~ Jana Lehtsaar

farther. And already after the first lesson, I realized that yes, I am taking steps in the direction that are close to me, everyone on the course - both students and teachers - were “my” people, and my vision and my movements in yoga, everything coincided with what we were taught.

I didn't experience any fear, fright and other things either during the training process, or now, after, on the contrary, you and your lectures gave me great self-confidence and support. Now I know for sure that this is part of my life, my world. I never wanted to teach yoga, I wanted to share what yoga is for me. Now it's even easier for me to do it. My yoga is my creativity) the instructor's course is my inspiration to continue and deepen my knowledge and skills, read the right books, think and draw conclusions.
Thank you so much for what you are doing, gently instructing us, not demanding, giving support.
I plan to master pranayama That's what became an interesting, albeit difficult lesson for me. I will continue to grow and develop. To try, find my own and share what I know, feel and can give with those who come to me for “my” yoga.

~ All the best to you in your good work.
Victoria Tarabukina

Many thanks to everyone!!! YOU ARE JUST SUPER!!! These two months I seemed to be in another world full of goodness and love!!! Although... at first it was hard... It seemed that a complete "cleansing" of the body and consciousness was taking place, and as you know, such a restructuring is not easy. But then, it became easy, and I looked forward to every weekend to find myself in our classes))))) I am very grateful to you all))))) and to our teachers and our group))) You all became family))) You all bring light and warmth, like our sun!!! Once again I say a huge THANK YOU!!! Good luck, love and success in our common cause))))))))

~ Best regards,
Yuliya Zimkina

“Getting together is a start, staying together is progress, working together is success!” Everyone on the course tried: to pack up, to stay, and to work. This applies to both instructors and students of the course. And I want to declare with full responsibility - we succeeded!!! Thanks to everyone who has been with us all this time.
Om Tat Sat!

Hello, School of Yoga Instructors with all its members!

I want to thank Sergey Repin from the bottom of my heart for organizing the Yoga Federation and for organizing the training, for finding and getting interested in such wonderful teachers - I honestly didn’t expect them to be so wonderful - and I really want to I would like to thank the instructors of the School of Instructors themselves for the influence that they had on me and which came as a surprise to me as well. I went to training with completely different thoughts - and did not suspect that it would start a new round in my life, a new turn for me. Studying at the School started an internal process of transformation in me, which, I am sure, will lead to good changes. I want to thank you for your patience with my “pickiness” :)) which was mostly just a craving for new knowledge - I really missed my studies, I graduated from the university a long time ago and was just glad to plunge into the educational process again, namely into close interaction “ teacher-student. :))

Thank you, Sergey, Olga, Nikolai, Camilla, Ludmila, Svetlana, Pavel, Dmitry and all the rest! I will follow the news of the Federation and hopefully see you again in the future.

~ Sincerely,
Evgenia Shafranova

So two wonderful months of the most informative training course for “Hatha Yoga Instructors” have flown by. For myself, I designated it as a stage of expanding the boundaries of my consciousness! I have never been so interesting and so exciting at any training, seminar, master class, probably because every word and every movement of the course teachers (many thanks to them for this) were filled with knowledge and aimed at unlocking the potential of the student, - as it turned out that he, i.e. potential, I also have) Once again I am convinced that love for your work works wonders! And thanks to such a professional approach of teachers from the very first days, unity reigned in our group, which helped me in these two months not only understand the essence of yoga and master some asanas that seemed impossible before, but also make friends and learn from the experience of my now colleagues and friends ! Summing up the above, I want to express my sincere gratitude and admiration to happy people - our teachers of the Yoga Federation of Russia, who are doing a truly important work for all mankind! May God grant you health and an inexhaustible desire to transfer knowledge to people who are just as interested and thirsty for knowledge as in our course!

~ With waves of positive energy,
grateful student,
