20 Journaling Prompts I Swear By to Get You Out of Your Head

Photo by Nicole Feest at NYLONSADDLE Photography

There is no better way to understand the way you think and what’s going through your head than to journal. The problem I’ve found is that the act of journaling is so open-ended that when it is most beneficial for me to do it, I avoid it.

Sound familiar? If this is one of the roadblocks you face when it comes to journaling, this post is here to help. I want to take the guesswork out of how you can journal effectively, without the impending paralysis that sometimes results from an open-ended prompt.

P.S. If you’re in the market for a new journal, you can find the W&D ruled linen journal available online here!

My first tip? Start by writing “Morning Pages.”

Whether you are new to journaling or are just here to get some new prompts to try, consider doing a “mental download” first using the “Morning Pages” method. (“Morning Pages” is a writing practice developed by author Julia Cameron. Wit & Delight contributor Ellen Koneck wrote a helpful post about this topic, which you can read here.) It’s a great way to get your mental gears greased and clean out any fragments of unfinished tasks, things to remember, or notes to self. It’s also really effective in priming the pump per se when it comes to getting the most out of more targeted journaling sessions.

Next, dive into journaling prompts.

Once you’ve done around ten minutes of subconscious, nonlinear writing, I suggest moving on to journaling prompts. I keep a list handy that I can refer to and take inventory of what I’m up against that day or in that moment. If I’m feeling anxious, I know which list to focus on.

Sometimes we journal to connect with ourselves; other times we journal to find perspective in moments that feel out of control. Given the bizarre times we’re living in and the spread of COVID-19, journaling is becoming an incredibly handy tool for this worrier.

When done correctly, journaling can be calming and clearing for your mind. It can help in releasing pent-up feelings and everyday stress. It can help you let go of negative thoughts while exploring your experiences with anxiety in a safe way.

The truth is, writing your thoughts down in a journal can positively impact your anxiety on a holistic level. When done correctly, journaling can be calming and clearing for your mind. It can help in releasing pent-up feelings and everyday stress. It can help you let go of negative thoughts while exploring your experiences with anxiety in a safe way.

When we get in the habit of writing about our struggles AND our successes, we begin to see enhanced self-awareness while also teaching ourselves about our triggers. Below you’ll find some of my favorite journaling prompts that have worked wonders for me.

Journaling Prompts for Self-Discovery:
  1. What do I know to be true that I didn’t know a year ago?
  2. What distractions get in the way of being my most productive?
  3. When do I feel most in tune with myself?
  4. If someone described me, what would they say?
  5. What can wait until next week?
  6. How does every part of my body feel in this moment?
Journaling Prompts for Managing Emotions:
  1. What emotions am I holding on to?
  2. How can I detach or neutralize this emotion?
  3. Why am I doing X?
  4. Why am I feeling this way?
  5. What is causing these feelings?
  6. Have I tried to take my ego out of the situation?
  7. How can I detach my emotions from the behavior of others?
  8. Did I use healthy boundaries before I began feeling this way?
Journaling Prompts for Anxiety and Depression
  1. What hurts right now? How can I find relief?
  2. When I look in the mirror, what do I see?
  3. What are the things in my home that are the most “me”?
  4. What am I doing right now?
  5. What happened before I felt a shift in my mood?
  6. Write down an entire list of what you are worried about. Star the items that you know are 100% true and not solely a feeling.

If you aren’t convinced, research shows journaling can greatly improve your overall well-being. Now grab a notebook, some tea (or whiskey?), and let the words fly.

How to use ChatGPT to improve the efficiency of your writing

“I think most people who use ChatGPT to help write essays do it wrong. » Ethan Mollik is a professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Entrepreneur and innovator. Oneusefulthing column translation for COMPETENCE Portal

gives ChatGPT (they may be made up), but because they have the wrong mental model of how to work with the system.

I mentioned earlier that ChatGPT is not Google or Alexa, but it's not the person you're giving instructions to either. It is a machine that you program with words.

The key to successful use of generative AI is prompting. Since ChatGPT often acts like a responsive person, we think he is. I polled my Twitter followers, and almost half are always polite to AI, and another quarter are mostly polite. I do this myself, saying "please" and "thank you" in my requests, although the AI does not care.

While there is nothing wrong with being polite, it often obscures the fact that all we're trying to do is ask an unfeeling machine to generate the text we want. This confusion is not a problem for other types of generative AI. Because AI image generators are not as verbose as ChatGPT, people using them have realized that they need to spend time "hinting development": editing and playing with hints to get the results they want. These clues can be very complex and can often seem abstract or almost poetic. They are a program that the AI follows, and the goal is to create a great image by trial and error and pushing the AI in the right direction.

But because of the humanoid nature of chat and the fact that written material is harder to evaluate immediately, many people try to avoid explicitly building hints in ChatGPT. But this is a mistake! More thought -out and specific clues work better than

Do not ask him to write an essay on how a human mistake leads to disasters. The AI will come up with a boring and straightforward piece that will do the bare minimum to satisfy your simple requirement. Instead, remember that you are an expert and AI is a tool to help you write. You have to push it in the direction you want.

For example, give clear reference points for argumentation on the topic: Write an essay with the following items:

  1. people are prone to errors
  2. Most errors are not so important
  3. 9 9019 in complex systems mistakes are catastrophic
  4. Catastrophe cannot be avoided

But even these results are much less interesting than the more difficult task: Write this essay with the following points.

  • use an academic tone.
  • use at least one clear example.
  • make it short.
  • write to a well-informed audience.
  • use the New Yorker style.
  • write at least 7 paragraphs.
  • vary the language in each one.
  • end with an ominous note.

Note that not all parts of the hint are exactly the same - there are six paragraphs, not seven - but that's typical of how generative AI works: you don't always get what you directly ask for, but you can push towards something unique and interesting by playing with clues.

Try asking him to be brief, or long-winded, or detailed, or ask him to be specific, or give examples. Ask him to write in a specific tone (sinister, academic, straightforward) or for a specific audience (professional, student) or in the style of a specific author or publication (New York Times, tabloid, science magazine). You won't achieve perfect results, so experimenting (and using the little "regenerate response" button) will help you achieve the desired result. Over time, you will begin to learn the "language" that ChatGPT uses.

Play with ChatGPT memory and length

ChatGPT's huge advantage over other generative AIs is that it has memory. It keeps track of what you've written and seems to memorize about 3,000 words. However, what exactly it remembers and how this memory is used is often unclear.

Sometimes memory is good, you can (and should) ask her to review previous work: change the third paragraph to be more professional or use another example in the middle and she will provide the corrected version. However, sometimes he forgets what you've been working on and you have to remind him of it. For example, you can tell him to reconsider the third paragraph in his disaster essay so he doesn't go astray.

Memory can also be a problem. ChatGPT can get stuck repeating the same examples or tone in many requests. To unlock him, you may need to ask him for a different example, or change the tone, or change your early clues. Often the best option is to give ChatGPT amnesia: start a new chat and try again.

Similarly, you can break your chatbot requests into smaller chunks. Have him do the intro and rework it to get the tone you want. Only after that start asking for additional paragraphs.

And if the results of these longer snippets break off, just asking ChatGPT to "continue" is enough to get the rest of the stuff.

Play with ChatGPT personalities and style

You can ask the AI to use certain styles to write text. You will get different results if you ask for an academic essay or a persuasive article or a blog post or a corporate memorandum. The results are often unexpected. Therefore, when experimenting with prompts, you should try several types of writing.

AI is just about complex, if it’s even possible… the beginning of the story

You can make the AI play characters by asking it to pretend to be a chef, writer, or Plato. This can lead to amazing results. You can start with this list of hundreds of personalization suggestions. I used a modified version of the narrator prompt: " I want you to be the narrator. You will come up with entertaining stories that captivate, amaze and captivate the audience. These can be fairy tales, educational stories, or any other kind of story that can capture people's attention and imagination. You have to provide a lot of details and make the story memorable."

Another look at ChatGPT errors and disasters!

Remember the limits... and your ideas? ChatGPT, like all generative AI systems, is a tool. Tools are used by people to perform specific tasks. Such an attitude towards him helps to reveal his potential, but also to avoid his pitfalls.

For example: Do not ask him for facts that you cannot easily verify. Don't ask him for links. Do not assign him to do mathematics or do analysis. It will happily pretend to do it all for you, and the result will most likely be wrong.
