Pitfalls of sexting

Traditional photographs or, as grandmothers also call them, photo cards have long become phenomena of the last century. Now people are less and less printing pictures, preferring to store their "memories" in digital form. It is easier and more convenient to share digital photos: you can store hundreds of them on a computer or on a “flash drive”, you can post them on the Web or send them to friends. The technical capabilities of a person in the 21st century are indeed wide, and progress does not stop there, just as the fantasy of a person who always finds an opportunity to apply technical innovations both for the good and for the detriment of his neighbor does not stop with him. So, the modern generation has a new fun, still unknown several decades ago - to send their candid photos to each other, which is called "sexting" (from English sex + texting) - the process of sending SMS messages of a sexual nature. nine0005

According to one version, "sexting" as a phenomenon began to be defined not so long ago: the first case was recorded in 2005 in New Zealand. The reason was the candid photos of a 13-year-old schoolgirl posted by her on a dating site. What is sexting is not a secret for today's teenagers and young people, because for many of them it has become a popular pastime. If earlier the distribution of photos of erotic-pornographic content was mainly the lot of the sharks of the porn business, now it is within the power of ordinary teenagers. nine0005

What drives teenagers and young people to intentionally distribute their candid photographs? Apparently, in this they see a certain way of self-expression, attracting attention, a kind of challenge to society, because such photographs will definitely not go unnoticed. Someone perceives it as an interesting game, for someone it gives a feeling of "stardom", for someone sexting is just fun and fun. So, a 17-year-old resident of California writes about sexting: “Can a demonstration of a beautiful body be considered a crime? In my opinion, this is much more interesting than the photos of robberies and murders that regularly appear on the Internet. Every person who opposes sexting is just a notorious psychopath.” Another teenager considers the exchange of intimate photos as ordinary flirting and an expression of sympathy: “I don’t understand why adults are so negative about sexting. However, couples in love most often send explicit photos to each other. What does it mean to be in trend, to keep up with the times, at least that's what glossy magazines advise. But the fact that teenagers can also get acquainted with such recommendations is not taken into account by such publications.

It can be assumed that the roots of the problem of passion for sexting lie in psychology. In the modern world, children, adolescents and young people are increasingly paying attention to virtual communication, replacing them with real ones. For them, it is more important how they will be evaluated on the Web, how many “likes” (I like ratings) users will give them. Another point is also possible: a teenager does not receive due attention from peers in reality and, in order to compensate for this, uploads photos that are dubious from the point of view of morality, exposing juicy details. nine0005

A real case can be cited as an example: a father (aged 49) saw his 16th daughter on the Internet, completely naked, filmed from various angles. He was shocked, because in life his daughter is a very modest and shy girl. Due to her shyness, she could not make fans and build relationships, so she tried to express herself and draw attention to herself in a slightly different way.

The opinions of psychologists about sexting are very diverse. Some equate sexting with early sexual activity, since teenagers (more often these are girls) who parade their candid pictures and send them out are in the same "moral decline" as teenagers who have promiscuity. Others see it as children learning about their own sexuality. Still others argue that the passion for sexting arises from the indifference of society towards teenagers, citing the fact that there are one hundred adult dating sites for one dating site for teenagers, where minors are not allowed to enter. It should not be forgotten that in a world saturated with information, the line between private and public becomes more and more blurred, especially when it all ends up on the Internet. Teenagers have been reportedly accused of distributing child pornography after the girls sent sexually explicit photos to adult men. Under US law, children under the age of 18 can be prosecuted, so teenagers who engage in sexting are automatically classified as criminals and can be charged with sexual harassment. In one of the states of America, a teenager was convicted for sending obscene photos depicting his genitals. The photos were sent to several classmates. How to deal with sexting? To do this, you need to abandon communication in the virtual? But this is impossible. In America, there are so-called "correctional camps" boot camp, where they send all problem teenagers, including those suffering from sexting. The correctional methodology of such camps is based precisely on the complete rejection of high technologies, including television. All this is done so that the child devotes more time to live communication, building relationships with peers. No one can control a teenager or an adult in this matter. There is another way out of the situation, which, however, is radical. A number of providers have services that send text and picture messages to the phone for parents to review. But not a single teenager will accept such total control “without a fight”. Therefore, if you find that a child is addicted to sexting, before taking any drastic measures, talk to him seriously, heart to heart - then you will better understand his actions, his motivation. And, of course, in no case should you scold and shame a teenager, this will only cause a negative reaction on his part, and he will become even more closed. If sexting is considered a temporary hobby of a teenager, a surge of hormones, emotions and just fun, then, on the one hand, it can be perceived as a kind of “age-related disease”. But on the other hand, sexting is a violation of morality, the generally accepted framework of behavior. In addition, such escapades are contrary to the culture of communication on the Web. The most negative side of sexting lies in the fact that teenagers, without realizing it, can provoke pedophiles into criminal acts.
