Translation of the article “The real difference between ‘single quotes’ and “double quotes” in JavaScript”.
Photo by Vlada Karpovich from PexelsWhich quotes should be used in JavaScript: single or double? The answer surprised me: these options are completely identical, except for the issue of escaping.
"In JavaScript, single and double quotes behave exactly the same" , writes Matthew Holman in his article on cloudboost.io.
Both single and double quotes are used quite often in JS code. They are used to create string literals.
"literal" is just another word for the value of a variable (whereas the variable name is a reference).
The only difference between single and double quotes in JS has to do with the escaping of quotes inside string literals.
Single quotes
If a string literal is formed with single quotes ( ''
), other single quotes within it must be escaped with a backslash ( \'
).
const wittyAI = 'I am \'not\' sentient. ' const wittyReply = 'No, you\'re definitely not "sentient."' console.log(wittyAI,wittyReply)
Double quotes
Similarly, if a string literal is formed with double quotes ( ""
), other double quotes within it must also be escaped with a backslash ( \'
).
const _wittyAI = "I think therefore I 'am' -- sentient." const _wittyReply = "No, you only \"think\", so you aren't." console.log(_wittyAI,_wittyReply)
Techrocks editorial note. No escaping is required if you used one type of quote to create a literal and another type inside it.
"Empty" === 'Empty'
A pair of double or single quotes can represent an empty string containing no characters.
const empty = "" const alsoEmpty = '' console. log(empty === alsoEmpty) // true (both are empty string) console.log(empty.length) // 0 console.log(empty === false) // false console.log(empty === 0) // false console.log(empty == false) // true (falsy comparison) console.log(empty == 0) // true (falsy comparison)
Wouldn't it be better to use back quotes?
ES6 introduced template literals, which are created using backticks ( ``
).
“Template literals are string literals that allow expressions inside. With them, you can use multi-line literals and string interpolation" , - MDN.
These literals have three big advantages:
1. Easier concatenation ("variable interpolation")
"string "+variable becomes `string ${variable}`
2. No need to escape single or double quotes
"\"Hello World!\"" becomes `"Hello World"`
3. Multi-line code can be written without newline characters (\n)
"Hello\nWorld!" turns into `Hello World`
Backquotes are also more suitable for HTML:
const webAwareAI = `` console.log(webAwareAI) /** *Output: *Loading consciousness.
.. It's loading...**/Loading consciousness... It's loading...
*
Template literals are as fast as string literals. So why not use backticks everywhere?
Don't forget about JSON
The lightweight JSON data format only allows double quotes.
If I need to constantly copy code from JavaScript to JSON files and back again, using double quotes will help maintain consistency. This happens quite rarely, so I have to remind myself not to use single quotes in JSON.
Functions stringify()
and parse()
, which are used to work with JSON files inside JavaScript, are aware of double quotes:
const greetings = JSON.stringify({Hello: 'World!'}) console.log(greetings) // {"Hello":"World!"} console. log(JSON.parse(greetings)) // Object { Hello: "World!" } // JSON requires double quotes: JSON.parse("{\"Hello\":\"World!\"}") // Object { Hello: "World!" } JSON.parse(`{"Hello":"World"}`) // Object { Hello: "World!" } try { JSON.parse("{'Hello':\"World!\"}") } catch(e) { console.log(e) } // SyntaxError: JSON.parse: expected property name or '}' at line 1 column 2 of the JSON data try { JSON.parse("{\"Hello\":'World!'}") } catch(e) { console.log(e) } // SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 10 of the JSON data
As you can see from the example, single quotes interfere with JSON parsing.
From a technical point of view, the reason for this is in the JSON specification (RFC 7159), which requires double quotes to be used.
Why not use all three kinds of quotation marks?
Yes, there is nothing wrong with using double quotes by default, single quotes inside strings if they are needed there, and backticks for including variables or writing multiline literals.
It all comes down to personal preference, although many people are in favor of sticking to one option and using it exclusively.
For example, Airbnb's style guide dictates that single quotes should be preferred, double quotes should be avoided, and backticks should be used sparingly.
//bad const name = "Capt. Janeway"; // bad - template literals should contain interpolation or newlines const name = `Capt. Janeway`; // good const name = 'Capt. Janeway';
Use ESLint for consistency
If style consistency matters to you (as it does to the Airbnb developers), it's easy to enforce with ESLint:
- or vice versa, where possible.
- This rule may also require the use of only one kind of quotation marks. (Unless the string contains a quote character, which will need to be escaped).
- Finally, ESLint can require the use of single or double quotes and still allow backticks to create template literals.
Use Prettier and forget about this problem altogether
An easier solution than using ESLint for style consistency is to use Prettier for automatic formatting.
Prettier uses double quotes by default. But it can be easily switched to use singletons (at least in CodeSandbox.io).
Prettier also has a corresponding extension in VSCode.
My personal preference
I tend to use double quotes and backticks in my code, although I'm thinking of using backquotes only.
I use Prettier with default settings for double quotes - just got used to it.
While I understand the benefits of uniformity in code, I don't think quotes play a very big role in this.
But if you have to choose, I think it's worth sticking with backticks, because template literals have advantages like interpolation and multiline.
When do you need quotation marks?
When do you need quotation marks?
Quotation marks perform the following functions in modern Russian:
- Separation of non-paragraph direct speech and quotations.
- Allocation of conditional (proper) names.
- Isolation of words that are used in an unusual, ironic, special meaning.
Separate articles of the "Pismovnik" are devoted to the pattern of quotation marks, the design of quotations, the use of quotation marks in their own names, the use of quotation marks in abbreviated names.
For quotation marks in direct speech, see the "Rules of Russian Spelling and Punctuation".
Below will be considered the features of the use of quotation marks for words used in an unusual, ironic, special meaning.
Quotation marks for words that are not used in their usual meaning
Quotation marks for words that are used in an unusual, special, conditional, ironic meaning not only help the author of the text to draw the reader's attention to a particular word or expression, but also make it possible to use lexical units belonging to a different style, for example, to use a colloquial word in a journalistic text (often in such cases, quotes are used by the author for “reinsurance”).
The first thing to note is that quotation marks for unusually used words are treated as an optional sign (in contrast to the obligatory use of quotation marks for proper names and direct speech).
"Handbook of Spelling and Literary Editing" by D. E. Rozental indicates that quotation marks are used:
1) words that are unusual, of little use, to which the author wants to draw attention;
2) words used in a special, unusual sense;
3) words that are little-known terms;
4) words are obsolete or, conversely, completely new, if this feature is emphasized;
5) words used in an ironic sense;
6) words used in a conditional meaning (as applied to a situation or context).
Thus, one of the main criteria for the use of quotation marks of the type under consideration is “common/unusual”, or, in other words, “usual/unusual”. But it is often very difficult to distinguish between the “usual” and “unusual” meanings of a word: firstly, for this it is necessary to have a highly developed linguistic instinct, and secondly, there are often cases when “usual” for one native speaker is “unusual” for another . Finally, the "unusual" meaning of a word can become "habitual" over time. That is why putting quotation marks on unusually used words raises so many questions.
What should be guided by when answering the question about quotation marks? Here are two simple rules:
-
focus on dictionary entries in explanatory dictionaries of the Russian language: if the word (phrase) is already recorded in them, therefore, the meaning is not unusual and quotes are not needed;
-
take into account the style of the text in which such lexical items occur. Of course, they can be found most often in newspaper and magazine texts, but at the same time, in “serious” media that offer readers materials on socio-political and socially significant topics, quotation marks for unusually used words are more appropriate than, for example, in newspapers and magazines targeted at a youth audience and writing on “light” topics, since when a word is used in an “unusual” meaning, it often has a colloquial or colloquial coloring.
