I THOUGHT THAT THINGS LIKE THIS GET BETTER WITH TIME
BUT I STILL NEED YOU, WHY IS THAT
YOU’RE THE ONLY IMAGE IN MY MIND

SAID I MISS YOU, MISSING YOU INSANE
BUT IF I GOT WITH YOU, COULD IT FEEL THE SAME

WANNA BE WITH YOU, BUT YOU’RE AWAY
SAID I MISS YOU, MISSING YOU INSANE
BUT IF I GOT WITH YOU, COULD IT FEEL THE SAME

IT DON’T MATTER WHO YOU ARE
IT IS SO SIMPLE, A FEELING, BUT IT’S EVERYTHING
NO MATTER WHO YOU LOVE
IT IS SO SIMPLE, A FEELING, BUT IT’S EVERYTHING

I MISS YOU, LIKE EVERYDAY
WANNA BE WITH YOU, BUT YOU’RE AWAY
SAID I MISS YOU, MISSING YOU INSANE
BUT IF I GOT WITH YOU, COULD IT FEEL THE SAME

IT DON’T MATTER WHO YOU ARE

I Care

I TOLD YOU HOW YOU HURT ME BABY, BUT YOU DON’T CARE
NOW I’M CRYING AND DESERTED BABY, BUT YOU DON’T CARE
AIN’T NOBODY TELL ME THIS IS LOVE, WHEN YOU’RE IMMUNE TO ALL MY PAIN
I NEED YOU TO TELL ME THIS IS LOVE, YOU DON’T CARE WELL THAT’S OK

WELL I CARE
I KNOW YOU DON’T CARE TOO MUCH
BUT I STILL CARE, LA, LA, LA… BABY, LA, LA, LA…

OH I CARE
I KNOW YOU DON’T CARE TOO MUCH
BUT I STILL CARE, LA, LA, BABY, LA, LA, LA… OHHH

EVER SINCE YOU KNEW YOUR POWER, YOU MADE ME CRY
AND NOW EVERY TIME OUR LOVE GOES SOUR, YOU WON’T SYMPATHIZE
YOU SEE THESE TEARS FALLING DOWN TO MY EARS, I SWEAR YOU LIKE WHEN I’M IN PAIN
I TRY TO TELL YOU ALL MY FEARS, YOU STILL DON’T CARE, THAT’S OK

WELL I CARE
I KNOW YOU DON’T CARE TOO MUCH
BUT I STILL CARE, LA, LA, LA… BABY, LA, LA, LA…

OH I CARE
I KNOW YOU DON’T CARE TOO MUCH
BUT I STILL CARE, LA, LA, BABY, LA, LA, LA… OHHH

BOY MAYBE IF YOU CARED ENOUGH, I WOULDN’T HAVE TO CARE SO MUCH
WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR TRUST, NOW YOU’RE JUST GIVIN’ UP
YOU USED TO BE SO IN LOVE, NOW YOU DON’T CARE NO MORE

OOOOOOOOOOO…

WELL I CARE
I KNOW YOU DON’T CARE TOO MUCH
BUT I STILL CARE, LA, LA, LA… BABY, LA, LA, LA…

OH I CARE
I KNOW YOU DON’T CARE TOO MUCH
BUT I STILL CARE, LA, LA, BABY, LA, LA, LA… OHHH

I STILL CARE (LA, LA, LA…. )
I STILL CARE (LA, LA, LA….)
I STILL CARE (LA, LA, LA….)

Rather Die Young

BOY YOU’LL BE THE DEATH OF ME
 YOU’RE MY JAMES DEAN
YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE I’M 17
 YOU DRIVE TOO FAST
 YOU SMOKE TOO MUCH
BUT THAT DON’T MEAN A THING
CAUSE I’M ADDICTED TO THE RUSH

’CAUSE I’D RATHER DIE YOUNG
THAN LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT YOU
I’D RATHER NOT LIVE AT ALL
THAN LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT YOU
(2X)

YOU KNOW I’VE BEEN IN LOVE BEFORE
YOU’RE THE FIRST ONE I EVER SEEN THAT BURNS LIKE GASOLINE
SO LIGHT A MATCH, TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
I’M HOLDING ONTO YOU, ’CAUSE THIS MIGHT BE OUR LAST NIGHT

’CAUSE I’D RATHER DIE YOUNG
THAN LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT YOU
I’D RATHER NOT LIVE AT ALL
THAN LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT YOU
(2X)

WHAT I’M TELLING YOU
I’M GIVING YOU MY LIFE, IT’S IN YOUR HANDS
AND WHAT I’M GONNA DO
IS BE A WOMAN AND YOU CAN BE A MAN
AND I WANNA SAY
NOBODY UNDERSTANDS WHAT WE’VE BEEN THROUGH
I’D RATHER GIVE UP EVERYTHING
THAN TO LIVE MY, LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT YOU, OHHH, OHHH

’CAUSE I’D RATHER DIE YOUNG
THAN LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT YOU
I’D RATHER NOT LIVE AT ALL
THAN LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT YOU
 (2X)

OH YOU TURNED OUT TO BE THE BEST THING I NEVER HAD
AND I WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST THING YOU NEVER HAD
OOOH BEST THING YOU NEVER HAD

I USED TO WANT YOU SO BAD, I’M SO THROUGH WITH THAT
’CAUSE HONESTLY YOU TURNED OUT TO BE THE BEST THING I NEVER HAD
OH YOU TURNED OUT TO BE THE BEST THING I NEVER HAD

Start Over

I FEEL WEAK
WE’VE BEEN HERE BEFORE
’CAUSE I FEEL WE KEEP GOIN’ BACK AND FORTH
MAYBE IT’S OVER, MAYBE WE’RE THROUGH
BUT I HONESTLY CAN SAY I STILL LOVE YOU

MAYBE WE’VE REACHED THE MOUNTAIN PEAK
AND THERE’S NO MORE LEFT TO CLIMB
AND MAYBE WE LOST THE MAGIC PIECE
AND WE’RE BOTH TOO BLIND TO FIND

LET’S START OVER
LET’S GIVE LOVE THEIR WINGS
LET’S START OVER
STOP FIGHTING ’BOUT THE SAME OLD THING

LET’S START OVER
WE CAN’T LET OUR GOOD LOVE DIE
MAYBE WE CAN START ALL OVER
 GIVE LOVE ANOTHER LIFE

I CAN SEE THAT WE’RE NOT HAPPY HERE
SO WHY WOULD WE KEEP PRETENDING WHEN THERE’S NOTHING THERE
MAYBE YOU LIKE IT, WELL I DON’T
 AND MAYBE YOU’LL SETTLE, WELL I WON’T

MAYBE WE’VE REACHED THE MOUNTAIN PEAK
AND THERE’S NO MORE LEFT TO CLIMB
AND MAYBE WE LOST THE MAGIC PIECE
AND WE’RE BOTH TOO BLIND TO FIND

LET’S START OVER
LET’S GIVE LOVE THEIR WINGS
LET’S START OVER
STOP FIGHTING ’BOUT THE SAME OLD THING

LET’S START OVER
WE CAN’T LET OUR GOOD LOVE DIE
MAYBE WE CAN START ALL OVER
AND GIVE LOVE ANOTHER LIFE

I KNOW THAT THIS WILL HURT YOU, I KNOW YOU’LL CRY
I KNOW I CALLED YOU SELFISH, BUT THAT’S A LIE
I FEEL I KNOW WHAT’S BEST FOR US
 LET’S

START OVER
AND LET’S GIVE LOVE THEIR WINGS
 LET’S START OVER
I’M TIRED OF FIGHTING ’BOUT THE SAME OLD THING

LET’S START OVER
WE BOTH KNOW THAT THIS LOVE WON’T DIE
MAYBE WE CAN START ALL OVER
 AND GIVE LOVE ANOTHER LIFE

I Was Here

I WANNA LEAVE MY FOOTPRINTS ON THE SANDS OF TIME
KNOW THERE WAS SOMETHIN’ THAT, SOMETHIN’ THAT I LEFT BEHIND
WHEN I LEAVE THIS WORLD, I’LL LEAVE NO REGRETS
LEAVE SOMETHIN’ TO REMEMBER, SO THEY WON’T FORGET

I WAS HERE, I LIVED, I LOVED
 I WAS HERE, I DID, I’VE DONE
EVERYTHING THAT I’VE WANTED AND IT WAS MORE THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE
I WILL LEAVE MY MARK SO EVERYONE WILL KNOW I WAS HERE

I WANNA SAY I LIVED EACH DAY UNTIL I DIE
AND KNOW THAT I MEANT SOMETHIN’ IN SOMEBODY’S LIFE
THE HEARTS I HAVE TOUCHED, WILL BE THE PROOF THAT I LEAVE
THAT I MADE A DIFFERENCE AND THIS WORLD WILL SEE

I WAS HERE, I LIVED, I LOVED
I WAS HERE, I DID, I’VE DONE
EVERYTHING THAT I’VE WANTED AND IT WAS MORE THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE
I WILL LEAVE MY MARK SO EVERYONE WILL KNOW
I WAS HERE, I LIVED, I LOVED
I WAS HERE, I DID, I’VE DONE

EVERYTHING THAT I’VE WANTED AND IT WAS MORE THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE
I WILL LEAVE MY MARK SO EVERYONE WILL KNOW I WAS HERE

I JUST WANT THEM TO KNOW, THAT I GAVE MY ALL, DID MY BEST
 BROUGHT SOMEONE SOME HAPPINESS
LEFT THIS WORLD A LITTLE BETTER JUST BECAUSE I WAS HERE

I WAS HERE, I LIVED, I LOVED
I WAS HERE, I DID, I’VE DONE
EVERYTHING THAT I’VE WANTED AND IT WAS MORE THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE
I WANNA LEAVE MY MARK SO EVERYONE WILL KNOW

Feel Something

I don't care if it hurts
I'll pay my weight in blood
To feel my nerves wake up
So love me now or let me go
Let me feel these highs and lows
Before the doors to my heart close

Touch me someone
I'm too young to feel so
Numb, numb, numb, numb
You could be the one to

Make me feel something, something
Make me feel something, something
Show me that you're human, oh
Make me feel something, something

I never thought I'd miss the bittersweet
I gave those years away
And lost my sense of taste
'Cause all of your lovers eventually fade
And leave you alone in the bed you've made
And all of the colors that bleed to grey will mean nothing

Touch me someone
I'm too young to feel so
Numb, numb, numb, numb
So give me just enough to

Make me feel something, something
Make me feel something, something
Show me that you're human, oh
Make me feel something, something

So if you're gonna stay then stay
But if you're gonna go
Make sure that you hurt me just enough to

Make me feel something, something
Make me feel something, something
Show me that I'm human, oh
Make me feel something, something

Make me feel something, something

Sentir Algo

Não me importo se dói
Eu pagarei meu peso com sangue
Para sentir meus nervos acordarem
Então me ame agora ou deixe-me ir
Me deixe sentir estes altos e baixos
Antes que as portas do meu coração se fechem

Alguém me toque
Sou muito jovem para me sentir tão
Entorpecido, entorpecido, entorpecido, entorpecido
Você poderia ser a única pessoa a

Me faz sentir algo, algo
Me faz sentir algo, algo
Me mostre que você é humana, oh
Me faz sentir algo, algo

Alguém me toque
Sou muito jovem para me sentir tão
Entorpecido, entorpecido, entorpecido, entorpecido
Então, me dê apenas o suficiente para

Me faz sentir algo, algo
Me faz sentir algo, algo
Me mostre que você é humana, oh
Me faz sentir algo, algo

Então, se você vai ficar, então fique
Mas se você for
Certifique-se de que você me machuque apenas o suficiente para

Me faz sentir algo, algo
Me faz sentir algo, algo
Me mostre que eu sou humana, oh
Me faz sentir algo, algo

Me faz sentir algo, algo

The toxic positivity trap: what it is and how to get out of it

    Do you hide "negative" emotions?

Do you ever feel like you have to hide your negative emotions? As if you are forced around the clock and at any cost to maintain the image of a "happy person"? nine0020

It may sound counterintuitive, but being positive can be toxic.

"Everything of value in life is achieved through overcoming the accompanying negative experience," says American writer and personal development consultant Mark Manson.

    • Optimism 2020: stories that helped us not to lose heart in the year of the pandemic
    • “No strength to live”: the pandemic has dramatically increased the demand for psychological help in Russia

"Any attempt to avoid negativity, suppress it or stifle it, results in a backlash. Avoiding suffering is a form of suffering. Denying failure is failure," he continues.

But toxic positivity requires you to do just that - force yourself to pretend to be an optimist and drown out negative emotions, no matter how false your optimism may be.

Psychologist Antonio Rodellar, a specialist in anxiety disorders and clinical hypnosis, says that negative emotions (the psychologist prefers to call them "unregulated") need to be acknowledged. nine0011

"The palette of emotions includes unregulated feelings such as sadness, disappointment, anger, worry or envy," he recalls.

"We can't ignore the fact that as humans we have a whole range of these emotions that are useful and give us information about what's going on around us and in our bodies. We can't ignore them," adds Rodellar.

British therapist, psychologist and author Sally Baker agrees: "The problem with toxic positivity is that it requires us to shut down some of the wide range of emotions we may experience in a difficult situation." nine0011

Accepting our emotions makes us stronger, says Sally Baker

"If you allow yourself to experience only positive emotions, you're lying to yourself," she says.

"When you're in a difficult situation, suppressing all the 'negative' feelings that come up will exhaust you. And worse, you won't be able to build up resilience to them," says Baker.

"It isolates us from ourselves, from our true emotions. We hide behind positivity so that people don't see us in a bad light," she sums up. nine0011

    Positive - ordinary and toxic

To understand what toxic positivity is, we must distinguish it from positive thinking. It sounds similar, but they are completely different things.

"Positive thinking was popularized by psychologist Martin Seligman, who studied depression. He found a new approach to a number of problems, situations and pathologies," says Rodellar.

In the 1990s, Seligman, then president of the American Psychological Association, told a conference that psychology should take a new step in the scientific study of everything that makes people happy. nine0011

In his famous 1995 book The Optimistic Child, an American psychologist explained that people are not born pessimists, but become pessimists because of their life experiences. He argues that we can combat this pessimism and transform our negative thoughts into more positive ones. nine0011

Excellent! So if I'm sad, all I have to do is focus on being happy, right? Not certainly in that way. This would be the short cut into the toxic positivity trap.

Negative emotions cannot be ignored - you must first recognize and accept them.

The trick is to moderate your positivism and avoid extremes.

You won't always feel good, and that's okay

"Positive psychology has become distorted over time," says Rodellar. decrease in the ability to withstand negative situations, "says the psychologist.

"Properly applied positive thinking is very useful, but it inevitably creates a fragmented perception of reality and a sense of helplessness. Denying harmful and painful situations is like looking at the world with one eye," says Rodellar. nine0011

How to know that you are trapped in toxic positivity

    • You are hiding or masking your true feelings.
    • You are trying to "not dwell" on the problem by ignoring your emotions.
    • You feel guilty about how you feel.
    • You try to minimize the negative experience of others by saying things that make you feel good.
    • You try to rationalize the situation ("it could have been worse") instead of acknowledging your emotional experience. nine0004
    • You shame or point the finger at others if they express disappointment or other "negative" feelings.
    • You ignore what's bothering you ("as it is, as it is").

Suppressing or ignoring "negative" emotions can be bad for your health.

"All the emotions we repress are somatized [psychological stress manifests as physical symptoms] and manifest through the body, often as a disease. When we deny an emotion, it finds another way out," says Rodellar. nine0011

Baker agrees: "Suppression of emotions affects your health. If you hide your problems behind a façade of toxic positivity, they will show up in your body in alternative ways, from skin problems to irritable bowel syndrome."

"When we ignore our negative emotions, our body tries to draw attention to the problem. Suppression of emotions exhausts us physically and psychologically. It's unhealthy and doesn't work in the long run," says the therapist. nine0011

Another consequence, says Rodellar, is that "when we focus only on positive emotions, we get more naive, infantile versions of situations that happen to us in life, and we become more vulnerable in difficult moments."

    Are you honest with yourself?

Psychopedagogy and neuropsychology expert Teresa Gutierrez believes that toxic positivity "has more serious psychological and psychiatric consequences than depression. " nine0011

"The world of emotions is devirtualizing, and this can lead to the fact that a person does not live a real life - this affects our mental health. This amount of positive is harmful for everyone. If there are no disappointments and failures, we will not learn to develop in our lives", she says.

If you're not okay, it's okay

Is toxic positivity in fashion? Baker believes so, and attributes this to the proliferation of social media "which forces us to compare our lives with other ideal lives that we see on the Internet." nine0011

"There's a constant trend on social media to show the most perfect version of yourself, it's exhausting and not real," says Baker.

"If we were more honest, we would feel free to experience any emotion. We are human beings, we should allow ourselves to experience the full range of emotions. It's okay if you're not okay. We can't be positive all the time." she supposes.

Gutierrez believes that "in recent years" toxic positivity has become more common, especially during a pandemic. nine0011

"We are living in atypical and strange times, many people are suffering. Anxiety, uncertainty, frustration, fear... All these are normal feelings. But we are too addicted to toxic positivity, and this is dangerous," she says.

"Everything will be fine" is a nice thought, but not very valuable advice

Rodellar says that "people are trying to find a shortcut to mental health, to feel better immediately, as if it is a right given to them by nature." nine0011

"It's nice to think that everything will be fine. But this does not mean that the process of achieving a goal should be pleasantly easy. It's more realistic to say to yourself "this will pass" when you have a difficult period in your life," says the psychologist.

"Emotions are like waves: they accelerate, gaining strength, and slow down, becoming foam and disappearing. Problems begin when we do not want to feel what we feel, then we lose resistance to the next wave," Rodellar explains.

    Recognize and not ignore

Psychologists consulted by the BBC agree that the ideal is to embrace all emotions without suppressing the ones we don't like.

    Image copyright, Getty Images

    Image caption,

We always "should" feel good, but it's unhealthy pressure moment, even if we are uncomfortable.

"Be more honest with yourself, don't be afraid to say that you're sad, that you're depressed, that you're worried. It's important to acknowledge when you're feeling down and understand that it's happening and will continue to happen," says Baker. "Just get on with it." your emotions and learn from them to become more resilient" (this advice will not work for those suffering from clinical depression, clinical depression can worsen without treatment). nine0011

University of Michigan psychology professor Stephanie Preston says the best way to test your emotions is "just to listen to them. "

"When someone shares negative feelings with you, don't rush to encourage them or try to get them to think positively by telling them that 'everything will be fine.' Instead, try to think about what is bothering or scaring them. Try to listen," - advises the expert.

"To be emotionally disturbed is already isolation, and when people try to drown out these feelings, especially if they are your family and friends, it hurts a lot. Listening to someone who is hurting can lead to big changes in their lives " says Preston. nine0011

You may find it useful too. There is evidence that being altruistic is good for your health, Preston notes.

    Image caption,

Listening to a friend is more important than trying to encourage them

    What if you feel down?

"The most important thing is to practice mindfulness," says Rodellar.

"Acknowledge the situation and your feelings. Don't deny that something is wrong, don't look the other way, and at the same time don't dwell on negative emotions," adds the psychologist. nine0011

"Emotions are information that we need to read and understand in order to take a better look at the situation and see what lessons can be learned from it, what can be changed in the future," says Rodellar.

How to put this advice into practice? Here are typical phrases characteristic of the toxic positivity paradigm and alternatives to them.

    Toxic positive

    • "Don't think like that, be more positive!"
    • "Don't worry, be happy"
    • "Defeat is not our option!" nine0004
    • "Only positive things here!"
    • "Could be worse!"

    Emotion validation

    • "Tell me how you feel, I'm listening"
    • "I can see that you're not well. How can I help?"
    • "Failure is part of success"
    • "I'm here, you can rely on me"
    • "I'm sorry you're going through this"

Source: The Psychology Group for your happiness, achieving it with the help of constructive psychology," calls Rodellar. nine0011

"It's okay to think that the glass is half full, but we need to accept situations when it's half empty, and from that point on, take responsibility for how we build our lives," he adds.

"All our emotions are real and real, and they all have value," Baker agrees.

Meta-emotions and guilt about being okay

Sometimes we tend to experience emotions that seem to run counter to what everyone else is feeling. People are worried, fighting for life, but everything is fine with us. The natural reaction in this case may be guilt and shame that you dare to experience positive emotions while others suffer.

However, there is nothing wrong or inhumane in this, it's just that in addition to emotions, we also have meta-emotions. Translated and adapted an article by journalist Char Adams for The New York Times on why it's important to be sensitive to your emotions and not deny your feelings.

When the coronavirus pandemic began, I expected it to turn my life upside down. As a disabled black woman living in New York (then at the epicenter of the American corona crisis), I thought I would face the full brunt of what was about to happen.

I was afraid during almost every working meeting, fearing that I would be on the verge of layoffs due to cuts in the company's budget. I was afraid that one of my family members would get sick, and there was nothing I could do about it. I was afraid that I would not be able to access the food and supplies I needed. But none of this happened. In fact, my business was going well - I enjoyed working from home, my family's health was stronger than ever, and I even learned how to cook new dishes. nine0011

However, my gratitude for all of this was fleeting

Quite quickly, a bizarre form of survivor guilt swept over me as my friends and peers around me lost their jobs or were forced to care for sick family members. How can I live well while the people close to me are suffering? Yes, how dare I?! And is it even right to feel good at such a terrible time?

It turns out that feeling bad because you feel good is a common thing. According to a study published in Emotion , the Journal of the American Psychological Association, it even has a name: a meta-emotion, a feeling that occurs in response to other feelings. Feeling guilty about joy, happiness, or well-being during a crisis is a negative-positive meta-emotion. Research shows that secondary feelings are so strong because they are associated with depression, and can be an indicator of the level of one's own emotional awareness.

“Meta-emotions play a very important role in our mental health. Withdrawing or rejecting emotions is associated with all sorts of negative outcomes, including depression, anxiety, and poor overall well-being.”, says Natasha Bailen of Washington University in St. Louis, co-author of the study.

“Our research shows that people tend to notice and experience meta-emotions when they pay more attention to their emotions in general ,” she adds. — And right now people have much more time than usual to really notice their thoughts and feelings. I think that because of the coronavirus, meta-emotions may become more common."

The life lessons we learned as children also influence our emotions as adults and guide our instincts, telling us when it is socially acceptable to experience happiness, sadness, anger, and any other emotion. Experts say that when we learn these lessons, we form a kind of expectation, an idea of how we should react and feel in a given situation. So when we have feelings that we think are inappropriate, the result can be guilt and even shame. Indirect social messages (the reaction of society and what is accepted by the majority) can reinforce our understanding of what feelings are right and which are not. nine0011

“I think it's a matter of social comparison, no one likes to feel like an outcast. You see fear, anger, and pain all around you , says Ryan Howes, a clinical psychologist in Pasadena, Calif., and author of the Mental Health Journal for Men, think, “Wow, that doesn’t match my experience,” and conclude, that something is wrong with you. You must be a monster!"

And this is undoubtedly a privileged position. Now luxury is not only the ability to stay at work during a pandemic, but the very fact that you have the means to comfortably work from home. In the United States, more than 5 million people have tested positive for coronavirus, and more than 160,000 have died from the disease. Key employees who cannot work from home face dangerous work environments every day, and unemployment claims are at an all-time high. nine0011

So yes, mild survivor guilt is the least of the nation's current problems. But the pandemic and the set of emotions it has caused gives us an opportunity to reflect on the complexity of our feelings and how to deal with them. Dr. Howes says some of his clients have reported feelings of comfort and even joy during the pandemic — and questioned the morality of such emotions.

“Some of my clients – probably about a third of them – did well during the coronavirus, and remain so now , says Dr. Howes. — People who used to lead very busy, active work and social lives enjoyed a period of downtime. The people who worked from home felt like they were being told, 'Okay, just do your best, we're not going to force you to the same standards as before' - and they were pleased to realize this.

He also adds: “All these emotions are valid and just. I like to say that feelings are non-negotiable. We just have them. We may feel guilty about this or that behavior, but we don't need to feel guilty about our feelings. " nine0112

However, our emotions can influence how we behave. Miriam Kirmeyer, a Montreal-based clinical psychologist and self-proclaimed friendship expert, says guilt and shame can trigger destructive behavior that will negatively impact your relationship.

“Emotions are normal, but if we don't find the right outlet for them, they can affect our well-being. And it can also lead to interpersonal problems with friends, says Dr. Kiermeier. - nine0111 The difficulty lies in the fact that feelings turn into certain actions that only increase the separation. When the feelings are so strong that they force us to back off, it can become a problem.”

Dr. Kirmeyer says that this variant of survivor guilt manifests itself in three ways: through avoidance, irritability, and egocentrism. When we experience emotions that are overwhelming or confusing, our natural response is to avoid thinking about things that make us uncomfortable, to avoid difficult conversations, and even to avoid those people in our lives who are suffering. When these emotions get out of control, they can harm our relationships, says Dr. Kiermayer. nine0011

“Experiencing shame is a really powerful force for disconnecting from others. When we feel a storm of emotions, we can fall into its trap, as a result of which we have less and less opportunities to support people around , she says. — We are not taught that we can, in principle, have conflicting emotions, much less how to live with them.

So what do we do with all this?

Suzanne Degges-White, an advisor and professor at Northern Illinois University, says the first step is to acknowledge your feelings. Research shows that suppression of emotions can cause physical stress and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. And while ignoring negative feelings can sometimes seem like a good idea, Dr. Degges-White says that when we suppress what we feel, we cannot adequately respond to and manage emotions. nine0011

“When we try to push away our own negative feelings, they start to show up in the most unusual form and still assert themselves. Most of us don't want to feel bad , she says. — We think about all these negative feelings that we just think shouldn't be there because we have to "focus on the positive." But until we acknowledge the negative moments in our lives, the moments that upset us, we will not be able to get rid of them. And that's what we need to do - get rid of them, destroy them." nine0112

Dr. Kirmeyer adds that it is also important to normalize negative emotions.

“We need to work on not judging ourselves and accepting as normal the truth that we are capable of experiencing a huge variety of emotions ,” she says. - In this way we can reduce the intensity of feelings, provide clarity and acceptance.

Dr. Howes suggests that we only discuss our feelings with people we trust, as this way we can form emotional closeness to support our friends and loved ones who may be struggling. nine0011

“Talking to others about how we feel would be a very practical step, because shame disappears when you bring it into the light.
