Watching a movie

Watching Movies for Your Mental Health I Psych Central

Watching movies can be beneficial for your mental health and serve as more than just a hobby or pastime.

Watching movies is an activity that has long been regarded as simply a pastime to enjoy when you have a free moment from life’s responsibilities.

While too much screen time can be harmful, engaging in hobbies that balance your work and professional life can be healthy.

Movies can provide several mental health benefits.

Boost mood

If you live with an anxiety disorder or depression, or you’re simply anxious and stressed about work and family commitments, taking time to watch a movie could help improve your mood.

A 2016 review found that enjoying leisure activities such as watching movies could boost mood and reduce symptoms of depression.

Relaxation

Pleasurable distractions and entertainment could provide rest and relaxation and replenishing qualities, according to a 2017 study.

Finding relaxation by watching a movie might be easier than it sounds. It might be a good idea to eliminate unnecessary distractions during the movie.

If you have trouble disconnecting from work or other daily stressors, consider leaving your phone and other devices in another room or on “do not disturb” mode so that you’re interrupted only for urgent matters.

You might find that you’re able to engage your mind with the plot you’re following without distractions, which could make for a more soothing experience.

A musical or romantic comedy, aka rom-com, could be just the distraction you need to relax after a long day.

Motivation

Watching movies could be motivational in many ways.

Giving your mind a break from work for something enjoyable could motivate you to be more productive when you get back to it and to ward off feelings of burnout.

If the movie highlights someone successfully chasing their ambitions, it could motivate you to do the same. It might also inspire you to take up a new hobby or pursue a new goal, according to a 2020 study.

Improve relationships

If you’ve been feeling some level of disconnect between someone close to you — whether it’s your romantic partner, best friend, or child — watching movies together could be just the ticket to rekindle your relationship.

It could be especially helpful if you have the same taste in movies and choose something new that you’re both enthused about watching.

Not only will you bond in the moment of watching, but you might feel a renewed sense of connection when you discuss what you watched afterward.

Reduce stress

A good comedy could help lower your stress levels. A 2016 study found that laughter could reduce the levels of hormones in the body responsible for stress, such as cortisol and epinephrine.

If you’re not in the mood to laugh, consider a drama or tearjerker. Crying could also lower cortisol levels in the blood, according to a 2020 study.

Inspire social and cultural reflection

Watching films that take on tough topics could be a thought-provoking experience for you.

Whether you want to better understand a current social issue or spark a conversation about an opposing point of view, watching films could help educate and enlighten.

Aside from providing entertainment and a distraction from a stressful day, watching movies could also be a therapy technique.

Cinema and video therapy are sometimes used as a part of psychotherapy. Therapists might use this type of therapy to expose you to a character who might be having a similar emotional experience, according to a 2021 study.

It could also encourage you to look at your situation from a different perspective, providing new ways of coping.

A therapist might choose a commercial film or video (documentary) related to your challenges. If you’re having trouble in your romantic relationship, you might be instructed to watch a film with the same theme.

You might also be given therapeutic exercises to perform before, during, or after viewing.

The movie, genre, and the theme chosen will depend on your situation.

Engaging in activities you enjoy, such as watching movies, can be beneficial. It could boost your mental health, relieve stress, and foster relationships.

Still, movies aren’t a treatment or cure for your mental health symptoms. If your symptoms interfere with your daily life, a mental health professional could help.

They might be able to determine whether cinema therapy would work for you and your lifestyle.

description, content, interesting facts and much more about the movie

At night, 41-year-old Julia can't sleep at all. Her boyfriend Raf snores, and then the neighbor decided to arrange a disco at 4 in the morning. In the end, she goes to the living room to eat ice cream. In the morning, she has to wash under ice water, because Raf forgot to pay the gas bill. The internet isn't working either, and Julia asks Raf to call the ISP. However, the man says that he works and he has no time. Also, Raf forgot to buy yogurts, which Julia needs in the morning. Running out of Julia's house, at first the concierge was rude, whom she politely asked about the gas bill, and then a neighbor who arranged a disco at night.

While making her way to work through traffic, Julia received a message from her friend Vanessa. She wanted to see her today. She also received a call from Valerio, the CEO of the firm where she worked as marketing director. Valerio hurried Giulia, saying that the client was coming soon, but when she ran into the office, he informed her that the client had rescheduled the meeting for the afternoon. Julia had to run a red light six times.

Valerio called Giulia to his office and introduced her to Ludo, a 20-year-old blogger with a million followers on Instagram. An incredibly positive but stupid girl becomes Julia's boss. After work, the heroine goes to the gym and tries to call the master to deal with the Internet. At the gym, Vanessa complains to her friend about her minor troubles, and when Julia tries to tell her about her really big problems, she turns to her phone.

During a meeting with clients, Julia presents the company's new marketing plan. She says that the new advertising campaign will involve popular stars among teenagers. At the end, Valerio decides to give the floor to Ludo. The girl does not offer anything concrete, but simply hints at Julia's old age, but everyone supports her, because they think that she knows what today's youth needs. As a result, Valerio suggests supplementing Giulia's "vintage" presentation with Ludo's proposals and meeting again in a couple of days.

Julia goes to her sister Bea's cat's birthday party. She threw a real holiday for her pet, and then asked her sister to sit with him while she went to Naples for a meeting of the association for the protection of cat rights. In the evening, she returns home and meets with the master on the Internet, who tells her that he rang the doorbell for half an hour, but no one opened it. He ends up leaving as his work day is over. Julia tries to quarrel with Raf, who was listening to music loudly and did not hear the call, but he claims that he concentrates so much during work and cannot constantly open the doors of various craftsmen and vacuum cleaner sellers.

After dinner they go to bed and Raf starts snoring again. Julia goes into the living room and turns on the TV. There is an advertisement for a certain Steve Bianconi, which she has been seeing everywhere for a long time. This time, Julia doesn't change the channel and ends up at Steve's appointment soon after. In his television commercials and booklets, he promises to restore calm and peace of mind to his clients. Steve examines Julia and hands her a vial of medicine. He says to use his maxim 4 drops, with each bout of stress.

While walking down the street, Julia tries to call the provider, but she is again hung up. She drinks the whole bottle at once and at that moment the phone is snatched from her hands. Julia kicks off her high heels and starts chasing the thief. The heroine screams and asks for help, but people around her are just starting to film everything on their smartphones. As a result, the thief collides with the skater and falls. Julia starts hitting him with her shoes and hangs up her phone. She also "thanks" everyone for their help.

Giulia breaks into Valerio's office and tells him everything she's been up to. She calls the boss a nerd who can't run the company, and then smashes Ludo's phone. She also offends Ottavio, a colleague whom she used to meet. On the way home, she cracks down on all her offenders, and then drags the master into the apartment, to whom again no one opened the door. The heroine breaks into the room of Jacopo, the son of Raf, who, together with a friend, is preparing doses of drugs for sale. She tells him that if he does not stop doing this, he can get out of her apartment. After that, she goes to Raf's workshop and again does not hold back her emotions. She tells Raf that he can sleep on the couch tonight and must leave tomorrow. The repairman is also kicked out by Julia when he tells her that the repair will take a whole month.

Julia goes for ice cream and thinks about her sister's cat. She runs to her house and finds the animal dead. At this point, Bea returns home and Julia, under the influence of drugs, again expresses everything she thinks. As a result, Bea drove Julia away and she ran to Steve. She asked to stop the effect of the medicine, but the doctor said that it was time to move on to the second phase of her recovery - creation. He gave her a soothing stone and a doll to take out her anger on. At night, this doll really helped Julia when the neighbor turned on the music again.

The next day Julia comes to work and apologizes to Ottavio. She says that she no longer wants to suppress her emotions and endure humiliation. She also tells him that Raf is not doing well with her now. During another meeting with clients, Valerio and Ludo present a new presentation, and at the end Giulia gets up to make some remarks. She is substituted for a joke from Ludo, which begins to humiliate all the fat women. After she shows everyone what she recorded on video, how Ludo makes fun of fat people.

At the end of the day, Valerio called Giulia into his office. The heroine thought that he would fire her for such a setup, but it turned out quite the opposite. Valerio, on the advice of Ottavio, decided to reorganize the marketing department and give Giulia a staff and an appropriate salary. Raf met Julia at home. He paid all the bills, fixed the Internet and bought yogurts. The man even cooked dinner, but Giulia kicked him and Jacopo out of her apartment anyway.

During the night, Steve's rock and doll didn't help Julia cope with the stress of her neighbor Rocco's music. She decided to get up and, as a result, threw his column out of the window onto his own moped. In the morning, Julia woke up in a great mood, and even the scales showed two kilograms less than usual. But when she left the house, her mood was spoiled by the neighbors and the police. However, Julia did not have time to agree with the peace officers - she received a call from Jacopo's school.

Julia managed to get her son Raf off the hook, who was caught with drugs. After that, she found out that he was spending the night with friends, and where his father, and even more so his mother, did not know. In front of the office, Julia met a fired Ludo who accused her of ruining her life. Ottavio came into Julia's office, with whom they agreed on an aperitif, but then Alesandra, Ottavio's bride, came. She stated that they were late for a meeting about preparations for the wedding, and as a result, the aperitif was canceled.

Julia came to Bea to ask for forgiveness for her breakdown. She tried to explain what was happening in her life lately and at that moment she saw a joint photo of her sister and Steve. Bea said that she was glad that Julia went to him and that he would definitely help her. She also said that Steve used to be like her and worked at a gas station, but after a trip to Tibet, he changed his life in a drastic way.

Julia burst into Steve's office and started accusing him of quackery. To this, Steve asked if his treatment had helped her. Julia had to admit that she really began to sleep better and the panic attacks disappeared. Steve encouraged her to start exploring herself, as she finally got to know her real self.

The next day Giulia went into Valerio's office, who was kissing on the couch with a new employee. She told him that she was leaving, and later went to her sister. Julia brought her a kitten and this time Bea forgave her.

Giulia gave the keys to Jacopo's apartment and decided to leave. In the courtyard, she met Rocco, with whom she had a nice chat. Having received insurance, he was able to buy a better motorcycle. In the parking lot, Alesandra drove up to her, who found out about the correspondence between Julia and Ottavio. Later, Ottavio himself arrived. He told Alessandra that there would be no wedding because he loves Julia. Alesandra drove away in anger, and Ottavio kissed Julia. However, this did not change the plans of the heroine to travel alone with herself.
