RTF is a file extension used with text files. It was created by Microsoft at 1987 as a standard for cross-platform document exchange, which is now recognized by most text editors.

How do I open an RTF file?
The inability to open RTF files can have various origins.
On the other hand, the most common problems associated with Rich Text Format files are not complex. In most cases, they can be resolved quickly and efficiently without the help of a specialist. The list below will guide you through the process of resolving your issue.
Step 1: Download and install WordPad
The most common reason for such problems is the lack of proper applications that supports RTF files installed on the system. This one is lightweight. Choose WordPad or one of the recommended programs (for example, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect Office, LibreOffice) and download it from the appropriate source and install it on your system. The safest way to download WordPad installed is to go to the developer's website (Microsoft Corporation) and download the software using the links provided.
Step 2: Check your WordPad version and update if necessary
Are you still unable to access RTF files even though WordPad is installed on your system? Make sure the software is up to date.
It may also happen that software developers update their applications to add compatibility with other, newer file formats. This may be one of the reasons why RTF files are not compatible with WordPad. The most recent version of WordPad is backward compatible and can work with file formats supported by older versions of the software.
Step 3: Assign WordPad to RTF files
If the problem has not been solved in the previous step, you should associate RTF files with the latest version of WordPad you have installed on your device. 1. RTF may be infected with malware - be sure to check it with an antivirus.
If RTF is indeed infected, malware may be blocking it from opening.
