One of the beautiful meditation cushion sets we have designed to make it easy for you to create a sacred space in your home.
FLOOR CUSHION
We use the natural mineral iron in precise quantities to create this soft taupe colour. The bold half moon pattern has been printed with a hand-carved wooden block using the ancient mud-resist technique (dabu).
Luxurious and weighty, our floor cushion - or ‘zabuton’ - can be used in conjunction with a seated cushion or on its own to enhance a relaxing space in your home.
Perfect for cushioning your knees and ankles (the body parts that often bear the brunt during meditation) this cushion is a helpful aid to your practice, giving your limbs that extra bit of comfort to help you stay seated for longer periods.
The inner cushion has been hand-packed with 100% pure cotton batting which has been processed through traditional upholstery machinery to fluff up the fibres.
Nine evenly-spaced hand-stitched dimples ensure the cotton filling stays evenly distributed.
In line with our natural ethos, the buttons on the pillowcase opening have been carved from coconut shells sourced from South India.
ROUND CUSHION
Our natural colour is the result of pure, unbleached cotton fibres. Washed with a natural soap for a softer touch, this colourway is perfectly understated.
Filled with organic spelt husks, the round cushion - or ‘zafu’ – is both firm and malleable.
Forming effortlessly to the contours of your body, it helps to tilt your pelvis at just the right angle for a comfortable sitting posture to support your spine.
Our spelt husk filling is a gentler and more lightweight alternative to the commonly-used buckwheat hull making it perfectly portable and super soft to sit on. Spelt husks are very durable too, remaining springy after years of use.
This versatile cushion is suitable for both meditation and yoga practice and works particularly well paired with our floor cushion to help support your ankles and knees.
Designed by us and hand dyed in Bagru, India by Avinash, Kriti and Shivraj Ji
The inner cushions are handmade by Makbool and his family in Jaipur
The cushion covers are tailor made by Vishnu and family in Bagru
No chemicals are used on any of our fabrics
Please note due to the organic processes we use, colour and print variations are inevitable but we hope, like us, you appreciate the beauty in these inconsistencies.

You can try to meditate in a chair or just sit on the floor. For testing, you can use your interior pillows. Eventually, you will end up buying a special meditation cushion. It will keep you in the right and comfortable position and encourage you to practice daily. There are no "special" pillows, they are all fairly affordable. The main thing is to find a suitable and convenient one for you.
The Art of Sitting
There are many types of ancient meditation cushions. In the past, Chinese nuns and monks had handmade mats made from dry grass. They wore these mats on their backs and used them also as protection from the rain. They could sit cross-legged and half-closed for hours in deep meditation. While these herbal pillows were common, they are not easy to find today. Imagine if such a mat were the only meditation cushion available to you - sitting on it for a long time would probably be a real challenge!
In contemporary Asia, such as India and Nepal, people often sit on mats to perform their daily duties, as they have done for centuries. It is also common in upscale homes to eat while sitting on carpet and cushions around a low table.
People who sit cross-legged on the floor from childhood often find it easier to adapt to classic meditation postures, such as the lotus position, than those who are accustomed to tables and chairs, like most Westerners. If you do yoga, dance, stretching, or other physical exercises that promote flexibility, you will most likely find it easy to adapt to sitting on a cushion.
Cushion, chair, bench, floor - all good. As you practice, your body will get used to sitting in meditation for a long time, and the practice will become more comfortable. But if you have any signs of constant pain or discomfort, it is best to see a doctor in a timely manner.
How to choose a good meditation cushion?
Think about your meditation posture
Common meditation postures include the traditional full lotus, half lotus, kneeling (seiza), sitting in a chair, and lying down (shavasana) postures. You can use more than one meditation posture, such as half lotus for morning meditation and then Shavasana at the end of your yoga session. The ability to meditate in any sitting or kneeling position is largely determined by the flexibility of the ankles, knees, and hips. In most cases, some support is needed to maintain proper posture and comfort while meditating.
Do you see yourself meditating on a cushion with your legs crossed, or sitting on a bench or hard round cushion as if on your knees (Seiza)? If you prefer the Seiza style of sitting leaning on a cushion or bench in a kneeling position, the
has small wooden benches and Zafu meditation cushions for that. Seiza, which originated in Japan,
is a good choice for meditators who prefer not to sit cross-legged. This encourages you to keep your back straight but doesn't put undue stress on your knees and may be right for older or just less flexible people.
If you are new to meditation, take the time to try out all the options and choose the one that works best for you.
Here are the signs of correct posture:
- Keep your back straight: this helps the body stay alert and focused.
- You need stability: it allows you to meditate without distractions.
- Comfort is important: Make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed while meditating. If you're feeling out of sorts, your legs are numb or too tight, just change positions or take a break and return to meditation when you're ready.
Types of Meditation Cushions
There are thin rectangular cushions, crescent-shaped cushions and round Zafu cushions.
Zafu Meditation Cushion is from Japan. Usually used for zazen (Japanese Zen meditation), it is made from heavy fabric and filled with fluffy material such as kapok. Many Japanese meditation stories feature Zafu, such as the story of a Zen master who "passed" 8 Zafu pillows during his years of practice. He wore them out in succession, and each of them ended up almost flat as a pancake.
Zafu Meditation Cushion, a traditional round pleated cushion, elevates the hips and upper body so that the legs can be positioned comfortably. Usually the person sits on the edge of the Zafu so that the hips are slightly tilted down. This pose creates a natural curve in the spine. When the spine is in its natural position, the back, shoulders, neck and head assume a comfortable upright position that is easy to maintain during meditation. The Zafu pillow is well suited for people of average height and with normal to above average flexibility.
Tall people and people with limited flexibility will find it more comfortable to sit higher on the very top of the Zafu. The Rectangular Meditation Cushion can be used in conjunction with the Zafu to increase the lift and allows the cushions to be positioned to maintain proper alignment.
A unique option is Crescent Pillow . This pillow has a built-in tilt that ensures proper alignment with great comfort. The extended sides of the cushion support your hips, while the round notch allows you to position your heels and ankles closer to your body. The half-moon pillow works well for most people, but is an ideal pillow for tall people and those who are less flexible.
For those who prefer a low rise, Buckwheat Hull Pillow may be the best solution. Due to the fact that the filling density of the pillow can be changed at your discretion.
Rectangular Meditation Cushion is a simple solution that can provide lift for proper body alignment. The rise is not as high as the standard Zafu. The rectangular meditation cushion is often preferred by more experienced meditators.
Zabuton Rectangular Meditation Cushions provide knee and ankle cushioning during sitting meditation. This pillow fits under a Zafu or other pillow. Proper alignment of the body in a seated position can create additional pressure on the knees and ankles, and Zabuton helps alleviate these pressure zones.
Comfortable meditation cushion will encourage you to meditate constantly.
Cushion materials
Main materials used for meditation cushions:
- kapok;
- wool;
- cotton;
- polyester;
- buckwheat husk.
Pillow fillers (kapok VS buckwheat hulls)
Kapok is a fluffy cotton-like material that grows on cotton trees in Asia and the southern United States.
Kapok - light (80% air - 8 times lighter than cotton) and resilient elastic fiber. It is durable and does not fall off during operation, therefore it is not even used for spinning. The hairs are covered with vegetable wax, thanks to which the filler is resistant to moisture and endowed with excellent buoyancy. This filling is very good for meditation cushions because it does not compress like cotton, polyester and foam. The pillow filled with kapok is very light.
Buckwheat Husk is the shell of the buckwheat grain. When thrown into a pillow, it creates the effect of sand, but with much less weight. However, a buckwheat husk pillow weighs more than a kapok pillow. The advantage of buckwheat husks is that they easily adapt to the shape of the body and create a very comfortable feeling. Buckwheat husk pillows are more durable than kapok pillows and are preferred by many.
The color of the cushion is not a big deal, although most people are looking for a color that will match the color scheme of their meditation space. In general, primary colors affect your personal energy in the following ways:
- Red - associated with the energy of fire, increases energy)
- Violet - restores balance (also plum)
- Yellow - uplifting and clearing the mind
- Blue is a calming color that helps to relax
- Black - Helps achieve deep inner focus and discipline
- Orange - brings healing both on the physical and psychological level
- Green - creates balance and tranquility; stimulates slow, deep breathing
No matter what posture one takes during meditation, a solid foundation, proper alignment to support the body and breath, and comfort are essential.
