About
Friendship Ended With Mudasir refers to a Facebook post by Pakistani government worker Asif Raza Rana, announcing he was no longer friends with a man named Mudasir. After the post widely circulated online in September 2015, it spawned a series of photoshopped parodies featuring various celebrities and fictional characters captioned with the phrasal template "Friendship ended with X / Now Y is my best friend."
Origin
On September 13th, 2015, Rana posted a photoshopped image of himself shaking hands with another man captioned with the announcement that his friendship with Mudasir Ismail Ahmed had ended, and that a man named Salman was his new best friend (shown below). Within one year, the post gathered upwards of 13,000 reactions, 10,500 shares and 6,300 comments on Facebook.[3]
Spread
On September 16th, a screenshot of the Facebook post reached the front page of /r/indianpeoplefacebook,[9] where it garnered more than 9,300 votes (96% upvoted) and 270 comments prior to being archived. That day, Gawker[1] published an article about Rana's Facebook announcement. On September 17th, Rana tweeted that the friendship was ended because Ahmed reported one of his pictures on Facebook (shown below).[10]
That month, Rana created a Facebook[5] fan group for himself titled "Prince Asif Raza Rana," which accumulated upwards of 4,000 members over the next year. On September 20th, a photoshopped picture of Donald Trump with Jeb Bush, crossed-out photos of Ben Carson and the caption "Friendship ended with Ben / Now Jeb is my best friend" was uploaded to Imgur[8] (shown below).
On October 16th, 2015, Rana posted a new photoshopped image of himself shaking hands with Ahmed captioned with the announcement "Friendship Regain With Mudasir" (shown below).[4] Over the next 11 months, the post garnered more than 4,800 reactions and 1,200 comments.
That day, Gawker[6] published an article about the announcement, which included a statement from Rana:
"I am friend to all world who would be friend to me. I left friendship with Mudasir because of his attitude and arrogant but Asif Raza Rana is NEVER proudy or attitude to for give old friend Mudasir because who is no longer attitude person and has good attitude now. So I regain frenship with he. I have made many many friends across whole world who believe in anti proudyness and real true friendship! Thank you!"
On October 29th, Redditor Sakerti posted a photoshopped image of a painting with the caption "Friendship ended with Portugal / Now Spain is my best friend" (shown below).
Prior to being archived, the post gathered more than 1,000 votes (97% upvoted) on the /r/indianpeoplefacebook[7] subreddit.
On May 18th, 2016, Tumblr user mujotan posted an illustration of the Overwatch heroes Zenyatta and Genji with crossed out pictures of the hero Hanzo and the caption "Friendship ended with Hanzo / Now Zenyatta is my best friend" (shown below). Within four months, the post gained over 9,900 notes.
