21 Beautiful Comics That Will Make Introverts Say 'Same'

Relatable

ByJenn Granneman

The artist hopes her comics will show fellow “quiet ones” that they are not alone in their introvert quirks, and they don’t need to be fixed.

Growing up, Debbie Tung was convinced something was wrong with her. Rather than going to parties and hanging out with friends, she preferred spending lots of time alone, quietly diving into her passion projects. Not knowing she was an introvert, she felt compelled to try to “fix” herself and live up to what she would later understand as our society’s obsession with extroversion, the “extrovert ideal.”

Then she took a Myers-Briggs personality assessment and got the result INFJ, one of the eight introverted personality types. Finally things clicked into place, and this new way of understanding herself inspired her to begin drawing comics about introversion.

“Creating comics became the best way for me to express myself,” she tells me via email. “It helped me to be more open, and take things from a more positive and humorous point of view.”

Tung lives in Birmingham, England, with her husband and young son. Before embarking on a career as an illustrator, she worked in an open office as a software developer (hell on earth for a quiet introvert like her). Constantly surrounded by people and noise — an incredibly draining environment for introverts — her job left her exhausted and unfulfilled.

Eventually, she left her job to focus on making art. As both an introvert and a highly sensitive person (HSP), she says there’s no place she’d rather be than in her home studio, surrounded by her books and art supplies. “That’s the best feeling in the world,” she says.

Her first book, Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert’s Story, perfectly captures what it’s like to be an introvert living in a world made for extroverts. It follows Tung through graduate school, marriage, her first job, and finding her way as a young adult. “It documents moments in life when I was struggling with my quiet personality and eventually learning about my introversion and embracing it,” she says.

She hopes her comics will show fellow “quiet ones” that they are not alone in their introvert quirks, and they don’t need to be fixed. “We all experience introversion in different ways and some, like myself, who are highly sensitive, also experience lots of anxieties and moments of self-doubt,” she explains. “Everything can feel intensely overwhelming at once, but in time, we will find the best ways to cope. When we learn to work with our quiet nature, that’s when we find our voice.”

Her advice to introverts who feel out of place in an extroverted world: “The important thing is to always stay true to yourself. It’s so cliché, but it really is the most important part of finding what works best for you and finding the right people who will support you and bring a positive energy into your life. There will be tough moments, but you will come out stronger. Remember that you’re not alone, and this is all part of the journey. Focus on your passions, the people you love, and what makes you happy. Life is too short for anything else.”

This illustrated gift book of short comics illuminates author Debbie Tung's experience as an introvert in an extrovert’s world. Presented in a loose narrative style that can be read front to back or dipped into at one’s leisure, the book spans three years of Debbie’s life, from the end of college to the present day. In these early years of adulthood, Debbie slowly but finally discovers there is a name for her lifelong need to be alone: she’s an introvert. The first half of the book traces Debbie’s final year in college: socializing with peers, dating, falling in love (with an extrovert!), moving in, getting married, meeting new people, and simply trying to fit in. The second half looks at her life after graduation: finding a job, learning to live with her new husband, trying to understand social obligations when it comes to the in-laws, and navigating office life. Ultimately, Quiet Girl sends a positive, pro-introvert message: our heroine learns to embrace her introversion and finds ways to thrive in the world while fulfilling her need for quiet.

true But it is safe to say that the comic is not even about an introvert and his life in society, it is much deeper than it might seem at first glance. "Being an introvert. The story of a quiet girl in a noisy world" is a work about the need to accept ourselves as we are, with all the advantages and disadvantages, to live regardless of public opinion, about the fact that you do not always need to leave your comfort zone. All in all, this is a great psychological story.

I am an introvert. Reading the book, I was directly surprised that it was written here and that I had so much in common with the heroine of the book. The book is my best friend, I try to dodge all sorts of meetings and conversations, loneliness is much more preferable to me than company. I am very pleased that there are such comics that can meekly tell about our life. But it's better to read good big books about it. The comics themselves are drawn simply, they are black and white. But they fed me. And this is good. This comic may be useful for introverts to get to know themselves and understand that you are not crazy and not sick in any way (but this is not accurate). And it will also be useful for other personality types to better understand people who are not very happy with the company.

Read and understand your life. I really liked this book, it was quite funny to recognize myself in some situations, others just caused laughter and tenderness. Despite the humor and simplicity of graphics, there is something to think about and draw certain conclusions. But the book is really small and reads quite quickly. However, I still like it and want more. I know that there is a sequel about book lovers and I'm going to read it.

I don't think this comic reflects the behavior of absolutely all introverts. This is the personal experience of one particular person, and the world is not divided only into such introverts and certain extroverts. For me personally, about forty percent of the sketches from Debbie's life were close. For example, Debbie has a rejection problem, so there's quite a bit of partying and anxiety to the point of panic in the comic, although I don't think any casual acquaintance would be offended if you weren't the one to come to his party.

pages, you can easily recognize yourself, a friend, a neighbor in these lines and sketches. Great book for comic book lovers.

Debbie Tang: "Being an introvert" or a comic about those who are afraid of a noisy world | Book Intelligent

If you know at least one introvert or maybe even a representative of this community, then you probably understand how difficult it is for these people to be in a society where everyone is open to each other, loves to communicate and spend time together, because man is a social being. However, not always...

For an introvert, going to a party with you is melancholy or sheer discomfort - crowds of strangers, noisy music and a minimal opportunity to start a conversation with someone. And what is there to talk about if you can spend time on something more useful.

A true introvert prefers to sit at home, read books, drink tea and watch movies, and of course lie in a warm and cozy bed. Isn't this a dream?

Debbie Tang's comic "Being an Introvert" is essentially her autobiography, which the talented artist presents in the way she does best - in the form of small sketches from life that touch on the difficult years of studying at the university and her first job, which is a difficult test for any introvert.

Through sketches, the author tells us not only about the complexities of introverts, but also sad, funny and touching moments from life that will definitely make the reader feel like a story from a comic book.

Fragment of the comic book "Being an Introvert"

It is also attractive that the sketches are connected with each other only in chronological order - and in everything else, these are separate situations that reveal the character of the main character. And this means that the reader will definitely not have to fill his head with a plot - there are enough of these funny, soulful sketches in which Debbie Tang has invested all her strength and a significant part of her life.

This is a kind of manual in which Debbie tells not only what it means to be an introvert, but also how to communicate and behave with people who belong to a similar psychotype. And in addition, it is often mixed with funny situations.

And yet, the heroine's lover is an extrovert, and this is a wonderful story that shows how two completely different types of people can coexist with each other, perfectly complementing each other at the right moments.
