Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(11) And for this cause--i.e., because they did not care whether things were true or not. This verse is not a mere repetition of 2Thessalonians 2:9-10. There we were told of external dangers which would attend Antichrist's coming for them that perish: because they had not cared for truth, therefore the presence of the Man of Sin, which could not even imperil the truth-lovers, would for them be full of special marvels and frauds by which they might be misled. Here is set forth the effect upon their own selves of refusing to accept God's gift of love of truth: God takes from them (by His natural law) their power of discerning the true from the false, and thus (as it were) actually deceives them. Every wilful sin does this double mischief: it strengthens the power of the temptation without; it weakens the power to resist within. For an illustration, see 2Chronicles 18:7; 2Chronicles 18:22 : Ahab cares only for the pleasant, not the true, and the Lord requites him by sending forth a lying spirit to entice him.

Shall send.--The Greek has sendeth: so "is" in 2Thessalonians 2:9 : St. Paul sees it all going on before his eyes. "A strong delusion" should be "an effectual inward working of error"--no longer a mere indifference to truth, but a real influence of error upon their hearts. This inward work of error is sent "with a view to their believing the lie" (the Greek has the definite article)--the lie (that is) which Antichrist would have them believe. A terrible combination when God and Satan are agreed to deceive a man! Yet what an encouragement to see God using Satan for His own purposes.

Pulpit Commentary

Verse 11. - For this cause; on account of their being destitute of a love of the truth. God shall send them; or rather, God sends them; the present being chosen because the apostasy had already commenced, the mystery of lawlessness was already working. Strong delusion; or, a working of error (R.V.). These words are not to be weakened, as if they meant merely that in righteous judgment God permitted strong delusion to be sent them; the words are not a mere assertion of judicial permission, but of actual retribution. It is the ordinance of God that the wicked by their wicked actions fall into greater wickedness, and that thus sin is punished by sin; and what is an ordinance of God is appointed by God himself. That they should believe a lie; or rather, the lie, namely the falsehood which the man of sin disseminates by his deceit of unrighteousness. Being destitute of the love of the truth, they are necessarily led to believe a lie - their minds are open to all manner of falsehood and delusion.

2 Thessalonians 2:11-13

The Anarchist’s coming is all Satan’s work. All his power and signs and miracles are fake, evil sleight of hand that plays to the gallery of those who hate the truth that could save them. And since they’re so obsessed with evil, God rubs their noses in it—gives them what they want. Since they refuse to trust truth, they’re banished to their chosen world of lies and illusions. Meanwhile, we’ve got our hands full continually thanking God for you, our good friends—so loved by God! God picked you out as his from the very start. Think of it: included in God’s original plan of salvation by the bond of faith in the living truth. This is the life of the Spirit he invited you to through the Message we delivered, in which you get in on the glory of our Master, Jesus Christ.

St. Theophan the Recluse

And for this reason God will send them an act of flattery, in order to believe them lies

This is a terrible moral punishment of God! After , - not so that on purpose he will send what they do not want, but let them through to them what they want and are looking for. The evil spirit of flattery and lies is constantly trying to take possession of everyone, darken everyone and drag everyone into a lie; but God does not let him in, when among those who do not follow the truth there are still those who give hope of conversion, who have not yet completely given themselves over to false paths, still think sometimes to lag behind lies and take the side of truth, He does not let him, lest they suffer violence from him inside, for he can shake even the strong, and not only these weak ones. When at last they give up completely and indulge in the pernicious path they have chosen, form with it and unite in heart, and stop thinking about falling behind it, then God will accept His hand that restrains the evil spirit of flattery, and he, missed, will rush upon them, it will pass into their hearts, and there it will begin to have the effect of flattery, to attract to falsehood, and it will attract. They will perceive the lie with all their hearts, and then they will discover it outside as well, they will visibly attach themselves to the Antichrist. But this will only do what is hidden inside that comes out. Saint Chrysostom is looking for: “Why, you say, will God allow all this to be? “Do not be afraid, beloved, but listen to what (the Apostle) says: (Antichrist) will prevail only over those who are perishing, who, even though he did not come, would not believe.” Theodoret adds: “This is: God will send them the action of flattery , the Apostle said instead - allow flattery to appear, so that there are lovers of deceit. For God will not send this flattery, but will destroy it with the word of His mouth.” Ecumenion: “ After , - do not accept that God sent, but usually express the permission of God to the Apostle in this way.” Theophylact: “ After - instead let him come. Look, at first they rejected the truth; and then God forsook them, and a lie took hold of them.”

The Second Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Thessalonians, interpreted by St. Theophan.

Ssmch. Cyprian of Carthage

Art. 11-12 And for this reason God will send them a force of error, so that they will believe a lie, so that all who did not believe the truth, but loved unrighteousness, would be condemned

Not to recognize the crime and not to repent - this is the wrath of God, as it is written: The Lord sent into him the spirit of intoxication (Is. 19:14), so that they would not be converted, not healed and healed after sins through prayers and just satisfaction. The Apostle Paul in his epistle affirmatively says: for not accepting the love of truth for their salvation . And for this reason God will send them a force of error, so that they will believe a lie, that they may all be condemned who did not believe the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness (2 Thess. 2:10-12). The first degree of happiness is not to sin, the second is to recognize sins.

Messages.

Ex. Efrem Sirin

And for this reason God will send them a force of error, so that they will believe a lie

Therefore, , says, God will send them false power, so that they will believe the deception , that is, God will allow the one they expect to come.

Commentary on 2 Thessalonians.

Ex. John of Damascus

Art. 11-12 And for this reason God will send them a force of error, so that they will believe a lie, so that all who did not believe the truth, but loved unrighteousness, would be condemned

You should know that the Antichrist is to come. Of course, anyone who does not confess that the Son of God came in the flesh and that He is perfect God and became perfect man, while at the same time remaining God, is Antichrist. However, in a special way and mainly the Antichrist is called the one who will come at the end of the world. Therefore, first of all, the gospel should be proclaimed among all nations, as the Lord says, and then he will come to rebuke the ungodly Jews... for not accepting the love of truth for their salvation . And for this reason God will send them a force of error, so that they will believe a lie, that they may all be condemned who did not believe the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness (2 Thess. 2:10-12).

Statement of faith.

Bliss. Augustine

Art. 11-12 And for this reason God will send them a force of error, so that they will believe a lie, so that all who did not believe the truth, but loved unrighteousness, would be condemned

We can also recall many other things that clearly testify that the corruption of the heart is carried out according to the secret judgment of God, so that when the truth is proclaimed, they cease to hear and therefore sin, and sin itself becomes a punishment for the past sin. After all, believing a lie and not believing the truth is, undoubtedly, a sin, but it is a consequence of that blindness of the heart, which, according to the secret, but righteous judgment of God, also appears as a punishment for sin. The apostle writes to the Thessalonians about this: for not accepting the love of truth for their salvation. And for this reason God will send them a force of delusion, so that they will believe a lie (2 Thess. 2:10-11).

Will send instead of: let him come. Look, at first they rejected the truth, and then they left God, and the lie took possession of them. The action of delusion the apostle calls the deeds of the Antichrist, which he does in order to deceive, or so he called him himself, acting on the prompting of Satan, in order to deceive many.

Lopukhin A.P.

Art. 11-12 And for this reason God will send them a force of error, so that they will believe a lie, so that all who did not believe the truth, but loved unrighteousness, would be condemned

Here the further fate of the "perishing" is described. They will first rebel against the love of truth (v. 10). For this, God will send them " the action of delusion " - when they will not only passively listen to lies, but will also become its active supporters and apostles. They will believe " lies " - everything here is a lie that denies the truth of the Gospel, the truth par excellence. Falsehood will become truth for those who perish; but this aberration will be allowed in order that they may be condemned for consciously rejecting the word of truth, and taking delight in untruth.
