    2016 was a very, very bad year no matter how you slice it. In tough times, comedy is often a form of escape that people turn to when they need comforting. With that in mind, we asked our contributors to pick the one piece of comedy in any form that they turn to when they really need cheering up. We’ll be sharing their choices throughout the week in a package we’re calling “The Best Medicine.”

    What better way to take your mind off the anxiety-inducing year that was 2016 than with a relaxing short from comedian Joe Pera?

    In Joe Pera Talks You to Sleep, the rising comic uses his soft-spoken demeanor to “explore some mildly interesting subjects” and offer insightful advice.

    The Adult Swim short premiered in March, but feels like a holiday special perfectly appropriate for ending 2016. The video shows an animated Pera sitting aside a crackling fire with his sleeping dog Gus, snow gently falling outside his window.

    “Falling asleep is one of the best feelings there is, even better than harmonizing with your boys,” Pera says.

    He also reveals he’s wearing his “new sweater” because he’s “trying to do more style.”

    The short is a go-to for cheering myself up because it provides comedy, relaxation, and some surprisingly bittersweet moments. At one point, Pera quickly cuts off a voicemail of him being rejected by a girl he admired, but soon advises that the best antidote for feeling blue is heading to the batting cages. He shares his secret: “You let the first pitch hit you so that your adrenaline kicks in. Then you hit the rest of them to the moon.”

    He ends the video on this note, which is a nice reminder for all of us: “If you got a crummy day coming up tomorrow you can just remind yourself that, ‘at least I’m not in jail like Bernie Madoff. ’”

    If that’s not enough to convince you to watch, take this comment from YouTube user, Nawty Alice: “I feel like I’m in a sweet sleepy codeine haze when I watch and listen to this. Soothed.”

    How to persuade parents to do anything: 4 easy steps

    Negotiating with parents is still an art. Especially if you want to ask them to buy something expensive or let them go somewhere. Approach any request as an important project: think over a plan, write down all the benefits, evaluate the chances of success and calculate the budget. Let's talk about the example of language camps.

    1. Study the subject

    Before you go to talk to your parents, state why you need what you want to ask for, whether it's an iPhone, a Netflix subscription, a trip abroad, or a set-top box. Let's take a language camp as an example. Answer a few questions: “Why do I want to go?”, “Where and when do I want to go?”, “What will it give me?”. Make a list of all the pros and cons, just for yourself at first. In order for the defense of the project to "investors" to be successful, you need to have full knowledge of the information and know all the possible disadvantages in order to present them as advantages. For example:

    Pros:

    • English level will improve;
    • friends from other countries will appear;
    • get rid of the language barrier;
    • I'm going in a group of guys, so I won't be alone;
    • verified school.

    Cons:

    • unknown country;
    • without parental supervision.

    Now think about what parents would say, what list would they have? You can separate the two tables or color-code the possible arguments of the parents and think about how you oppose them.

    2. Start the conversation right

    If you're bringing up a topic for the first time, it's best to test the waters first to see if the parents are ready to make a decision now or if they need to think. How to start a conversation:

    • “Subscribed to the blogger's channel. I liked the video about his trip to the language camp.”
    • “We discussed with friends how to learn English better, and decided that it was necessary to communicate with native speakers. And what do you think?"
    • “Recently I read an article about English schools. Turns out it's different."

    If you are sure that your parents will not immediately reject the idea, then you can say directly: “I want to go to a language camp. Let's discuss it."

    Do not forget that parents are people too. They may have a difficult day or a bad mood. Try to consider these factors before speaking.

    3. Gather feedback

    Other people's positive experiences will help score points in your favor. Ask friends or friends of friends to share their impressions. For example, here is what our students say:

    • “Mom says that after the trip I have matured a lot and become more independent. Be open to the world and don't be afraid of the opportunities it offers. Traveling without parents is the path to adulthood.” Rodion, 16 years old
    • “The trip to the language camp had a big impact on me. I became more open, it became easier for me to ask questions and communicate with people. My horizons have expanded and my attitude to money has changed.” Dasha, 14 years old
    • “A month in the USA with EF helped me overcome the language barrier that I could not cross in Russia. It became much easier for me to speak English, I stopped being afraid that I would make a mistake.” Katya, 16 years old

    Share with parents the stories of students who have studied abroad, how traveling can affect you and why it is important. The key to success is personal motivation: friends' stories will not become your experience.

    4. Make a budget

    Parents like the idea, but the question of the budget remains. Calculate how much your “project” will cost, offer alternatives, and compare with other potential family expenses. The calculation may be approximate. Take a trip from EF to Torquay (England):

    Traveling with your parents, you will most likely not interact with the locals, which will prevent you from being able to fully immerse yourself in English culture.

    When showing the budget, try to talk not only about numbers, but also about the benefits that a trip to the camp, a new iPhone or set-top box will bring to you. Believe in what you say and be persuasive.

    Six ways to quickly put a child to sleep

    Komsomolskaya Pravda

    Dom. FamilyMom and BabyMom and Baby Parenting and Development

    Olga KOROL

    April 6, 2016 1:00

    Komsomolskaya Pravda correspondent, mother of two daughters, conducted an experiment on her children

    A teddy bear has turned from a friend into an enemy. Tanya is 4.5 years old, Anya is two. And like most kids, they don't really like going to bed. They prefer to play, dance, jump around their parents who got home an hour before lights out. In general, the poem “I hate the word“ sleep ”by Sergei Mikhalkov is about them.

    I tried many ways to send children to bed: I read mountains of literature, studied the experience of grandmothers and other parents. Here's what came out of it.

    Handkerchief or fingers

    Method 1 . A video about a baby that dad sends to the realm of Morpheus is roaming the Internet in just a minute. He simply runs the most ordinary handkerchief over his son's face. A few rhythmic passes - and "the client is ready"!

    What happened to me . The scarf turned out to be a good means of soothing. Daughters liked it when a piece of cloth was passed across the face. But only. Three minutes later, I began to reduce the muscles of my arm - hard from habit. And the little one did not even think to close her eyes - she was waiting for the continuation.

    Apparently, the headscarf had to be tamed from an early age. And touch can really relax babies. My eldest, for example, fell asleep from the cradle under a light pat on the ass. The youngest - under careful stroking her forehead and eyebrows with her fingers. (+)

    Water procedures

    Method 2 . Many mothers note: babies calm down and quickly fall asleep after a warm bath.

    What happened to me. This method is absolutely not suitable for my daughters! Even after a warm bath, they strongly resist sleep. As a result, they only get overexcited and no longer want to sleep. Therefore, I arrange bath procedures immediately after daytime sleep or two to three hours before nighttime. Although a nice little five minute shower before going to bed is a must. (-)

    Plush friend

    Method 3 . On the Internet, it is advised to get a bed friend for your child. It can be a teddy bear or a doll. The main thing is that the toy is soft. In the future, this is a help for parents: using the example of a toy, you can explain to the baby that before going to bed you need to brush your teeth, wash your face, change into pajamas and go to bed on time. And when mom or dad is late at work, a teddy bear is also a guarantor of peace: if the toy is nearby, everything is in order.

    What happened to me. Until the age of two, the eldest slept in bed with a plush cat. And then he turned from a friend into an enemy for mom No. 1. Instead of falling asleep, the daughter began to play: either she would tie ribbons, then she would get dishes - to drink tea, then she would assemble a cat house from pillows. As a result, the mustachioed-striped went to the rest of the toys for the night. In general, it does not suit us. (-)

    Grass-ant

    Method 4. Even in ancient times, our great-great-great-grandmothers used herbs, folk remedies were collected and tested for centuries. There are several options: you can make a soft pillow from hop flowers or put valerian root under the baby's pillow. And when bathing in the evening, add a series to warm water.

    What happened to me. Both daughters flatly refused to lie on a pillow of intoxicating filling. It was not huge, but the flowers, collected even in a thin layer, did not allow the little ones to comfortably lay their heads.

    Valerian root didn't work either. Buying it is as easy as shelling pears: almost any pharmacy has it. But whoever sniffed valerian not in tablets at least once will understand: it has a specific smell. Only cats like it. For people, it may seem too harsh. For a week, my husband and kids stoically endured the smell. And then I just threw it in the trash. (-)

    Leisya, song

    Method 5 . Ancient as the world way - lullabies. There are about a dozen of them in my repertoire: those that my mother and grandmother sang to me, from films and cartoons, from children's television shows. The language you sing in and the words are not important. The main thing is monotony and calmness.

    What happened to me. On the third or fourth lullaby, the daughters gave up. Russian folk songs and romances were especially good. Before I had time to finish the sad story about a Cossack walking along the Don, or about a sad mountain ash, Tanya and Anya were fast asleep. (+)

    Book for the night

    Method 6. Reading a fairy tale before going to bed is an excellent solution for calming a child who is at war. And a good incentive to drive the naughty into bed. Many modern parents include an audio fairy tale for their children at night. There are plenty to choose from: there are many books on the Internet that have been read by professional actors.

    What happened to me. Any sound from a mobile phone, computer or player for Tanya and Anya is a reason to go to the dance floor. And it doesn't matter if it's a lullaby, sounds of nature or an audio fairy tale. That's why I only read live. Ideally, by heart. By the way, a great way to train your memory. My young ladies prefer poems by Agnia Barto, Sergei Mikhalkov, Boris Zakhoder, Samuil Marshak and Korney Chukovsky. French nursery rhymes, told in a calm voice, also go with a bang. At the same time, you can tighten the tongue.

    After such readings the girls calm down rather quickly and fall asleep easily. In infancy, they did not have time to listen to “Moydodyr” or “Uncle Styopa” to the end at all - they turned off. (+)

    KP journalist Olga Korol is the mother of two daughters. Photo: Personal archive

    Put the baby to bed in the dark and in a ventilated room. No nightlights or bedside lamps. The light, even subdued, only provokes my baby. As well as stuffiness, in which the girls spin on the beds for hours, trying to sleep.

    Cartoons should be turned off an hour or two before bedtime. And no scary stories at night! Otherwise, parents will have to sleep in fits and starts, saving children from nightmares.

    Quiet games (for example, building towers from blocks), drawing, reading books - ideal for little ones before bed.

    A cup of warm milk is the best drink for a child before sending him to bed.

    PRO TIP

    Routine rituals

    - The first thing a mother should do is to plan a daily routine for the baby and follow it, - says neuropathologist Anna Vladimirova . - It is important to observe the ritual of going to bed every day. What it will be, decide for yourself. For example, bathing on one of the children has a relaxing effect, but on the contrary, it invigorates someone. It's the same with a massage or a lullaby. The main thing is to repeat all the procedures daily. And the sooner you start doing this, the sooner the child will get used to it and will be ready for bed on time.

    And one more thing - it is important how mother herself feels at this moment. You need to calm down, even if you had a hard, stressful day. Drink a glass of warm milk with your baby, listen to calm music.

    Parents should be patient when developing a daily routine for their child, including sleep time. In no case do not use any horror stories like: “If you don’t sleep, your uncle will pick you up!” It will only create problems. You should not scream and even more so spank the child if he cannot fall asleep quickly. Remember yourself, there must have been moments when you also lay with your eyes open for a long time.
