“You can’t have anything, you can’t have anything at all. Because desire just cheats you. It’s like a sunbeam skipping here and there about a room. It stops and gilds some inconsequential object, and we poor fools try to grasp it--but when we do the sunbeam moves on to something else, and you’ve got the inconsequential part, but the glitter that made you want it is gone--”

“No ego can last for long without the need for more. Therefore, wanting keeps the ego alive much more than having. The ego wants to want more than it wants to have. And so the shallow satisfaction of having is always replaced by more wanting.”

“The story the Takers have been enacting here for the past ten thousand years is not only disastrous for mankind and for the world, it’s fundamentally unhealthy and unsatisfying. It’s a megalomaniac’s fantasy, and enacting it has given the Takers a culture riddled with greed, cruelty, mental illness, crime and drug addiction.”

Our existence is happiest when we least notice it: it follows that it would be better not to exist at all.
If life gives something, it is only to take it away.
Deep dreamless sleep is better than any day of the happiest life.
For all love, no matter how ethereal it may give itself, has its roots exclusively in the sexual instinct; yes, in essence, it is nothing but a precisely defined, specialized, in the strictest sense of the word, individualized sexual instinct.
Life with its hourly, daily, weekly and yearly, small, big troubles, with its deceived hopes, with its failures and disappointments - this life bears such a clear imprint of inevitable suffering that it is difficult to understand how one can not see it, how can one believe that life exists in order to enjoy it with gratitude, how can one believe that a person exists in order to be happy.
The present ... never satisfies us, and the future is unreliable, the past is irrevocable.
The truth is that both death and life with its sufferings are one inseparable whole - one labyrinth of delusions, to get out of which is as difficult as it is desirable.
For in the end, time is the evaluation that nature makes of all its beings: it reduces them to nothing.
The fact that all sexual love is based on an instinct directed towards future offspring, will become absolutely certain after a more precise analysis of it, which we therefore cannot avoid. First of all, this refers to the fact that a man is naturally inclined to inconstancy in love, and a woman - to constancy. A man's love noticeably decreases from the moment she has received satisfaction - almost every other woman attracts him more than the one he already possesses - he craves variety. A woman's love, on the contrary, increases from this very moment. This is a consequence of natural expediency, which is aimed at preserving, and therefore at the greatest possible reproduction of the genus. The fact is that a man can safely conceive more than a hundred children a year, if he has the same number of women at his disposal; a woman, with any number of men, can produce only one child per year (if you do not take into account the birth of twins). Therefore, he is constantly looking for other women; she is firmly attached to one - for nature prompts her instinctively, without reflection, to find a breadwinner and protector of future offspring. As a result, marital fidelity is artificial for a man, but natural for a woman, which means that adultery on the part of a woman, both objectively, in its consequences, and subjectively, in its unnaturalness, is much less excusable than a man’s adultery.
Since passion is based on the illusion that what is valuable for the family is presented as something valuable for the individual, then after the goal of the family is satisfied, this spell must disappear. The spirit of the genus, which once took possession of the individual, now again sets him free. And released by him, the individual again falls into his original limitations and poverty; and he sees with amazement that after such lofty, heroic and boundless quests, he has not received any other pleasure than that which is connected with the ordinary satisfaction of the sexual instinct; against expectation, he does not feel happier than before.
