90,000 Hurricane Ida left over a million homes without power in the US South 90,001 90,002 90,003 August 30, 2021, 11:01 Society

US President Joe Biden declared a natural disaster in the state of Louisiana, where Hurricane Ida hit on Sunday night Moscow time. As a result of the natural disaster, more than a million homes were left without electricity.

Hurricane Ida, a category four out of five, hit the US south coast in Louisiana on Sunday. Initially, the wind speed at the epicenter was about 46 meters per second, but then dropped to 43.

More than a million homes in the state are reported to have lost power as a result of the disaster.

A little later, the first victim of Ida became known.

“Deputies received reports of a citizen who may have been injured by a fallen tree in a house off Highway 621 in Prairieville. Deputies arrived at the scene and confirmed that the victim had died," the Ascension Parish County Sheriff's Office in Louisina said on its Facebook page .

A US Geological Survey official said the Ida caused America's largest river, the Mississippi, to flow in the opposite direction.

“The flow of the river slowed from about two feet (0.6 meters) per second to half a foot (0.15 meters) per second in the opposite direction,” told Scott Perien, who works near New Orleans in Louisiana, caught under the blow of the elements.

According to him, the reason for this "extraordinary phenomenon" is hurricane-force winds, which exceeded 65 m/s, and storm surge in the Gulf of Mexico, where the Mississippi flows into. The scientist observed a similar picture 16 years ago, when one of the strongest hurricanes in history, Katrina, covered the state.

US President declared a natural disaster . This means providing federal assistance in addition to the efforts of the state authorities to restore areas affected by the hurricane.

Help will also be given to the citizens themselves. It will include grants for temporary housing and home renovations, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of a natural disaster.

Previously, Louisiana Gov. John Edwards predicted that Ida could become the worst hurricane since the 1850s. He also asked hospitals to check generators and stock up on drinking water, oxygen and personal protective equipment in case of a storm.

Judging by the first reports from New Orleans, the city was able to cope with the elements without a large number of casualties and destruction. This could also be due to the preparations that the state made after the arrival of Katrina in 2005. Recall that at that time the strength of the hurricane reached the fifth category on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, which made it the sixth most powerful Atlantic Basin hurricane on record. The city of New Orleans received the most severe damage from it, where about 80% of the city's area was under water, and about 700 thousand people lost their homes. The natural disaster was accompanied by man-made accidents, oil spills, and an increase in crime. Their consequences killed 1,836 residents, and economic losses reached $125 billion.

After that, more than 400 kilometers of dams, pumps and gates were erected in Louisiana (about $14.5 billion was spent on the construction - Gazeta.Ru).

The day before, Ida was assigned a power of the fourth category, which means that the hurricane will cause catastrophic damage. The wind speed during such natural phenomena reaches 250 km / h, the hurricane tears off roofs, completely destroys small houses, and significantly damages capital buildings. Hurricanes of this category uproot most of the trees, cause flooding of the land for many kilometers inland coastlines. As a rule, infrastructure damage after such typhoons is repaired within a few weeks.

However, later it became known that the category of a hurricane after arriving in Louisiana dropped to the first.

how designers rehabilitated tattoos and made them fashionable

First appeared thousands of years ago, the art of tattooing has passed through different cultural milestones in the history of mankind. From taboo marks to a symbol of self-expression, attitudes towards body drawings have changed. What do such body art and fashion have in common, and how gloss finally "rehabilitated" the tattoo - we tell in our material.

Tattoos are common today, but far from being a modern invention. The history of drawings on the body can be traced back to 5000 BC. This period includes clay figurines, which the Japanese decorated with tattoo-like paintings.

Since then, tattoos have spread to all corners of the world, from elaborately decorated mummies in ancient Egypt to Europe, where sailors collected tattoos as keepsakes during their rugged voyages across the South Pacific.

Historically, the perception of tattoos has changed and has always been associated with geography, socio-economic status or certain values. They were both a badge of distinction and a stigma. But although tattoos have been part of the culture of mankind, only relatively recently have they become part of fashion.

From contra to culture: Issey Miyake's tattoo collection

For many decades, tattoos had no place in fashion: neither in the form of ornaments, nor even real ones. High fashion remained a world closed to the general public. Secular society, elegant dresses, sophisticated women - such was the universe created by Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga, who determined fashion in the middle of the 20th century. But then came the raging 1960s, and soon this hurricane of rebellion and protest broke through to the podium.

Issey Miyake

Japanese designer Issey Miyake witnessed the student uprisings of 1968 and did not want to pander to the whims of the elite and upper echelons of society. In 1971, in New York, he presented his autumn-winter collection, called Tattoo.

The line has become a real hymn to youth culture, rock and roll and contemporary art. Models at Tattoo included a hand-painted dress and men's bodysuit. The painting was done using traditional Japanese tattoo techniques (irezumi). The clothes also depicted the idols of the younger generation - Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, which, of course, only contributed to the popularity of the collection.

Janis Joplin Jimi Hendrix

Miyake's creations were also one of the first political acts on the fashion scene. Tattoos were legalized in Japan only in 1948, but still primarily evoked negative associations with the yakuza (members of Japanese crime syndicates) in many parts of the country. Miyake, with his gesture, paved the way for a dialogue about the relationship between politics and fashion.

From underground to mainstream

Other designers soon followed in Miyake's footsteps and became inspired by the art of tattooing, from Martin Margiela's translucent tattoo-covered top introduced in 1989 to Jean-Paul Gaultier's 1994 Les Tatouages collection. The tattoo is no longer hidden - it becomes an ornament and is flaunted.

At the same time, popular streetwear brands began to build their image on fashion's newfound love of rebellion. For example, the American brand Von Dutch, which became especially popular in the 2000s. French stylist Christian Audigier contributed to a successful start, rethinking the trademark creative style of the artist Kenny Howard, nicknamed Von Dutch, after whom the brand is named.

Kenny Howard

Howard worked as a mechanic and became famous for being one of the first to customize cars and motorcycles. One of his most famous drawings - a flying eye - has become not only a symbol of the brand, but also a popular tattoo motif among bikers.

Well, the brand itself and its style were no longer associated with the underground, but with the world of stars - Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Fred Durst and other celebrities adored Von Dutch.

Gwen Stefani

Well, Odigier himself did not give up popularizing the art of tattooing. After leaving his job at Von Dutch, he began to collaborate with Ed Hardy, a famous artist and student of one of the most famous tattoo artists in the world, Sailor Jerry (real name - Norman Collins).

Hardy, in memory of his teacher, founded the Sailor Jerry brand, which also produced clothes. Here, the entire creative heritage of Collins, the rights to which were bequeathed to Ed, again came to the fore.

Ed Hardy Show 2009

Prints and designs inspired by traditional old school color tattoo designs adorned dresses, jeans, T-shirts and more. Characteristic motifs for this style are heart, rose, birds, skulls, half-naked girls, swords. On clothes, bright drawings were still plentifully decorated with rhinestones.

Ed Hardy has been worn by Britney Spears, Heidi Klum, Madonna, Shakira, Usher, Paris Hilton and many more. During the first year of its existence, the Ed Hardy brand brought about $ 15 million to its creators.

Tattoos on the covers of magazines

Although fashion turned the tattoo into a desirable fashion detail, it was presented in the glossy industry rather through clothes - things with paintings or prints. By the 2010s, it was still almost impossible to find tattooed models on the covers of world fashion magazines. The famous Rick Genest, known as Zombie Boy, was a sought-after fashion model, but still remained a phenomenon in the industry.

But then things began to change, thanks in large part to celebrity tattoo fans who took part in photo shoots.

And here is a barely visible piece of Lady Gaga's tattoo on the back in American Vogue in October 2018, Katy Perry's thin Sanskrit font in Vogue Japan in September 2015 (and in Japan the attitude to tattoos is before still controversial), the tiny heart adorning Ariana Grande's ring finger was no longer surprising in British Vogue in July 2018.

It looked natural and felt like part of the star's personality. But until recently, larger tattoos could still be seen only inside the magazine in advertising campaigns or in the photo, or even in thematic publications.

Lady Gaga Katy Perry Ariana Grande

Taking the cover of Vogue in March 2019 with Justin and Hailey Bieber a step further. The singer posed with a naked torso, and all his massive tattoos on his arm were in the frame. British Vogue went even further in May 2020, where Rihanna became the heroine of the cover.

Justin and Hailey Bieber

Rihanna

This was the first magazine cover where a large tattoo was located on the model's face. Rihanna did not have to radically change her image - the drawing was made by makeup artist Isamaya French. In addition, such a cover clearly made it clear that the stereotypes that tattoos do not paint girls no longer have a place in 2020.

Cultural differences remain to this day, and in some countries such as Japan, Iran, UAE, tattoos are still not welcome, but the tattoo seems to have finally shed its "bad" and rebellious reputation, becoming the epitome of beauty and individuality.

Well, today even models make them without fear. An example of this is the son of Cindy Crawford Presley Gerber, who made a tattoo on his face, and her daughter Kaya, who made several mini tattoos on her body. Her friend and successful model Cara Delevingne also has tattoos (recently, the girls also made paired tattoos on their feet).
