100 Open-Ended Questions and What They Are

Open-ended questions are a great way to get more information from the person answering your question. By their very nature, they beg for more details.

And so, I’ve compiled an enormous list of open-ended questions that you can use to understand them better or just to ask. But first, let’s look at what open-ended questions are.

What are open-ended questions?

To put it as simply as possible, open-ended questions are questions that require more than a short, fixed response. Open-ended questions try to avoid answers like “Yes.”, “No.”, “The Battle of Midway.”, or “Onions.”

Open-ended questions attempt to make the person who is answering the question give a more detailed and elaborate response.

While almost any question can be answered in a few words, if you try hard enough, a good open-ended question tries to get around this.

The opposite of open-ended questions are closed-ended questions. Check out our page on closed-ended questions for more information and examples.

But now, let’s look at some open-ended question examples.

Open-ended question examples

  • What were some of the longest-lasting consequences of the Great Depression on US society?
  • What do you like most and least about your parents’ cooking?
  • Why are humans creative?

As you can see, even though you could give a short answer to any of these questions, it would be more natural to give a longer response.

List of the best open questions

Life is a kaleidoscope of colors. In fact, nothing is black and white. Questions cannot always be answered simply with “yes” or “no”. The challenge is how to initiate long, deep, meaningful conversations that can tickle the essence of being human.

What are open questions?

Open-ended questions are questions that require the interlocutor to answer with more than one word. His/her answer can be a few sentences, a list, a few paragraphs, or even an essay!

This type of question requires the other person to actually stop, think and reflect on the question before giving their answer. He cannot simply answer "yes" or "no" without giving reasons. The answer to this question is usually longer and deeper. They usually involve personal experiences, opinions, or ideas about a subject.

Open-ended questions are usually asked to find out more about something or someone. They are usually used as follow-up questions to the previous question. You can use them when you are interviewing, trying to make new friends, or are interested in some stuff!

What do you think
