Myers-Briggs Personality Test is a psychological assessment of personality characteristics on 4 descriptors, which considers a person's predisposition to such work activities, character and behavior style that help him feel comfortable and develop his best qualities.

There are 16 total results after passing the Meyers-Briggs test. These are 16 personality types.

How to pass the test and what is it based on?

You can take the test in English or Russian here. It takes literally 10-15 minutes of time, and you immediately get the result with a detailed description of the type you belong to.

Questions like these are waiting for you:

You often remain calm, even during stressful situations.
It's easy for you to make new friends.
You do not hesitate to introduce yourself first in an unfamiliar society.

To answer the question, you need to put down a score from extremely positive to extremely negative. nine0003

The test evaluates you on four graphs (scales), depending on what you rely on in certain circumstances: Intuition N )

  • decision -making (logic T - ethics F )
  • Acts (rationality J - irrationality P )
  • Hence of this - a unique set of your personality type. nine0003

How can the Meyer-Briggs test be used in HR?

Let's go through the areas where the 16 personalities test can help. Let's start with the ones already mentioned:

    1. In recruiting

We at PeopleForce are for a simple and understandable recruiting process that is not overloaded with unnecessary information for the candidate. But if your company welcomes pre-testing of employees for more than just their hard skills, the Meyer-Briggs test can be a great addition to the hiring process. 0006 . Especially if it is submitted informally, or already at the stage after accepting the job offer. The latter can be presented to the employee as an additional task for onboarding - they say you want to get to know the newcomer better and are ready to communicate in a way that makes everyone feel comfortable.

    2. In team building

Get together and take a couple of tests to discuss the results and get to know each other better? Sounds like a great team building plan. And if you include the test in some kind of self-development training, it can also become an entertaining part of the training (the same edutainment that we already talked about earlier). Team building results can be fixed somewhere, and participants issue cards with characteristics of their personality type.

In addition, when discussing the most suitable for each type of work, employees in an informal setting will discuss their plans and wishes for development much more openly . What if the test will help you make career plans for your colleagues?

    3. In conflict resolution

The work process is impossible without conflicts, they are part of progress. And, as is often the case, sometimes you can inadvertently ignore the feelings of an employee, or do the wrong thing with him. To consider how best to build communication in conflict situations, it would be nice to know0005 what personality types you are dealing with . Consider the recommendations for communicating with the conditional manager Andrey, who is a “strategist” and always wants to do things his own way. Promise him space to implement ideas - and the conflict will dry up.

    4. In developing team leaders and promoting employees

There are many tools to help you find out which team has leadership qualities, but the 16 personalities test will not be superfluous here either. Pay attention to "commanders", "polemicists", "coaches" and others personality types who have natural leadership habits. But remember that the test does not always display the truthful alignment - you should not focus only on its results and ignore other, conditionally non-leader types.

    5. In the self-development of employees

Of course, there are those in the company who have never heard of the MBTI test. It's quite normal. But perhaps by asking them to take an assessment, you will spur such employees to look at themselves from the other side , understand your strengths and weaknesses, think about self-development. On your part - a minimum of effort, and the team - an impetus to work on themselves.

    6. In working experiments

Set up hypotheses based on the test and try to test them. For example, there is a stereotype that extroverted types are better suited for teamwork, while introverts perform well on the “remote”. Try to match the test results with real facts about employees. A great option to check if the Meyer-Briggs test is valid: if everything matches, you can re-create work teams and approve transitions to remote work, for example. nine0003

Is the MBTI worth the time?

What if we say that 2 million people take the 16 personalities test every year, it has been translated into more than 30 languages, and is often recommended in schools as a career guidance?

In fact, the story is even deeper. The Meyers-Briggs test was developed specifically for the working environment. During the Second World War, the test was used to assign women to the jobs where they would most easily prove themselves, instead of the men who had gone to the front. nine0% of the well-known Fortune 100 companies use the 16 personality test when recruiting or as a team building event. Therefore, try to look at the test from the other side - this is a good and very simple free tool to improve your work with different types of employees.

16 Personality test | Background | Free Test

The Personality Test 16 is generally based on the personality indicator developed by Katherine Cooke Briggs and her daughter Isabelle Briggs Myers. Their development of the test occurred in the 1940s and was based on psychological research conducted by Carl Jung in the 19th century.20 p. The Model Test is based on a series of questions that collect information about how a person usually reacts or feels about different situations. nine0003

The answers to these questions are calculated to determine the individual type of human personality. Important insights can be gained from understanding personality type, such as optimal career choices, best romantic relationships, and paths to personal growth.

    Personality types

Tests based on the Briggs and Myers method divide people into 16 different types, organized into four pairs of opposite traits.

    These couples:

    • Extraversion (E) and Introversion (I)
    • Feeling (S) and intuition (N)
    • Thinking (T) and feeling (F)
    • Judgment (J) and Perception (P)

One of each pair combined to create a 4-letter abbreviation for each personality type, for example:

    ESFP: extraversion (E), feeling (S), feeling (F), perception (P)

    INTJ: introversion (I ), intuition (N), thinking (T), judgment (J)

These personality traits are grouped into four categories that describe how a person interacts with the world. nine0003

Everyone experiences both traits in each pair, but usually one dominates the other on personality test 16. quiet and prefer to be alone. Extroverts love to speak their mind and thrive in social situations. They are usually popular and liked by other people. Extroverts can feel overwhelmed and exhausted if they are away from other people for too long. nine0003

    Introversion (I)

Introverts are quiet, reserved and more comfortable being alone than extroverts. Introverts prefer to rely on themselves for entertainment rather than communication or stimulation from others. They are usually self-sufficient and prefer to work alone than in a group. Socializing drains an introvert's energy and needs time alone to recharge. Because of this, they place less emphasis on communication and social skills than extroverts. nine0003

    Perception (S)

Feeling people place great value on what they see, feel and experience in the real world, unlike intuitive people who prefer to live in their imagination. In favor of facts and practicality, people with a sensitive nature look outward and prefer not to deal with philosophical ideas or introspective reflections. They will rather focus on what they can specifically experience with their feelings.

    Intuition (N)

Intuitive people focus on imagination and ideas rather than what is actually in front of them. They tend to prioritize introspection and daydreaming, and often feel as though they do not belong to or live in the real world. Unlike feeling people who enjoy seeing, touching, and experiencing the world, intuitive people are self-centered and prefer to live in their own heads. While sensitive people love facts and practicality, intuitive people tend to lean toward allusions, read between the lines, and analyze things more deeply. nine0003

    Thinking (T)

Thinking people are objective, rational and logical. Their decisions and actions are usually driven by their minds, not their hearts. Many people often think Thinking people are insensitive, but they are not. They can be just as emotional and sensitive as the Feeling group, but feelings are not their top priority and they may hide their emotions or keep them from coming to the surface. They prioritize facts over feelings.

    Feelings (F)

People with the Feeling trait care more about emotions and their expression than what is considered rational or logical. However, this does not mean that Feeling types are irrational; it only means that people with this trait are more likely to express their emotions compared to Thinking people who prefer to suppress their emotions. Those who focus on feelings and expressions tend to be more open-minded, articulate, empathetic, and sensitive.

    Judging (J)

Those with the Judge trait tend to strategize and plan before acting. They prefer a well-thought-out plan to go with the flow. They are organized, reliable, responsible and have a very good work ethic. They are always ready, armed with checklists and contingency plans. They are probably committed to plans for the future, but may forget to live in the present.

    Perception (P)

People with the trait Perception, not Judgment value the feeling of freedom. They don't want to be tied to a particular activity or commitment if they think there is something better out there that is worth their time. They are great at seeing new opportunities and seizing them when they can. They are good at improvisation even in emergency situations. They accept life as it is and feel overwhelmed if forced to stick to a schedule. nine0003

More than the sum of its parts

Each personality type as a whole is more than the sum of its traits. In addition to each of the four core traits of each profile, additional personality traits from the personality test appear when a combination of these traits is taken into account.

For example, a person with a combination of Thinking (T) and Intuition (N) will behave differently than a person with the traits of Thinking (T) and Sensing (S). The combination of Thinking and Intuition reflects a person who often thinks about various possible circumstances or even fantastic ideas. But someone with the traits of Thinking and Feeling, who can also often get lost in his thoughts, will rely on his feelings rather than his intuition, and his thoughts will be based on the current state of reality. nine0003

    History of

The development of Catherine Cooke Briggs and her daughter Isabelle Briggs Myers, now known as Personality Test 16, began in 1917 when Catherine Cooke Briggs began her personality research. She noticed marked differences in the characters of family members and began to read biographies until she came up with a rudimentary typology that suggested four temperaments: thoughtful, spontaneous, executive, and social.

Based on the book by Carl Jung Psychological Types was published in 1923, Briggs admitted that her theory was similar to Jung's, but nowhere near as developed. She and Myers carefully studied Jung's work and published papers based on his theories before focusing their efforts on the practical use of psychological types.

Jung's theory of psychological types was based on clinical observations and suggested that there are four main psychological functions by which people perceive the world: sensation, intuition, feeling and thinking, each of which has two polar orientations, such as extraversion or introversion. The test is based on these features with the addition of the Judgment and Perception traits. nine0003

In 1942, Briggs began developing a "sorter" tool to help people determine their psychological type preferences (now commonly used as a question-and-answer test). They started by testing their concepts by creating a separate question, and then collecting data to determine if the element accurately measured what was intended.

They started with a group of about 20 friends and relatives whom they thought they already knew from years of observation. Once they were able to refine their data with this initial group, they extended their testing to larger and larger groups. They moved on to college student classes, eventually testing over 5,000 medical students from 45 different schools and then 10,000 nurses. nine0003

In 1944, Myers took a part-time job with the human resources director of a large company to familiarize herself with the personality sorting tools currently in use. She was able to master modern practices and test every person who applied for a job at the company.

Throughout the 1950s and 1970s, Myers presented her data and personality sorting method to various educational institutions, publications, and psychologists. In 1962 she wrote An Introduction to Type 9.0440, a short but comprehensive educational book still in print. By the time of Isabelle's death in 1980, their test was widely used by organizations to improve communication with employees, career counseling, and many others who wanted to improve personal relationships.

The 16 personality test was created for ordinary people and emphasizes the value of natural differences. We are all supposed to have certain preferences in how we see the world, and these preferences shape our interests, values, and motivations. nine0003

Application of the 16 Personality Tests

The information obtained from a personality test can be used to improve many common life situations:

    Work and Career

Once you understand your personality type, you can make much more informed decisions for your career or career choice. You can also learn to interact better with your bosses and co-workers if you consider how their personality types and your own can work best together. nine0003

    Romance

Some personality pairs naturally make better partnerships than others. If you know your own type and your partner's type, you will better understand how to behave with each other and make your life better than it can be.

You can also use this information when meeting new people to better read new people and make a better first impression.

    Friendship

As with romantic relationships, some personality types find it easier to make friends than others. Some people like to stay at home while others like to go out, and some people like spontaneous trips while others like to plan ahead. Friendships between some types can be too complex to last, while others are made to last a lifetime.

    Parenting

Every parent knows that every child has a personality. As a parent, you will find it easier to communicate with and guide your child when you understand his or her personality type. Some children will develop according to a strict schedule, while others need the freedom to grow. Your own personality type will also influence your parenting style, and it may or may not naturally fit with your child's personality. nine0003

    Family

Family relationships are sometimes the most difficult, but learning about the personality types of your relatives can be of great help. Once you know a little more about where a person comes from and how they react to the world, you will be in a much better position to connect with them.
