Why You Dream About Your Teeth Falling Out

Have you ever dreamt about your teeth falling out? Perhaps you’ve even had this dream more than once. It’s reasonable to feel a little disturbed after such a dream. You might wake up wondering if there’s a deeper meaning that your subconscious is trying to tell you. Perhaps this dream is accompanied by a feeling of a loss of control, or brings up worries about losing something or someone important to you. Perhaps the dream reminds you that it’s been a while since you’ve been to the dentist, and you’re feeling anxious about your dental health.

If you’ve had a dream like this, you’re not alone. Research exploring common dream themes tells us that 39% of the population has experienced dreams about their teeth falling out, rotting, or breaking, at least one time in their lives. Recurrent teeth dreams are reported by 16.2% of sleepers, and 8.2% report having teeth dreams regularly.

A particularly vivid dream of teeth falling out may naturally raise concerns about your health, well-being, or sleep quality. But whether you’re feeling alarmed after your own unsettling teeth dream or simply curious about why these types of dreams occur, it is important to know that teeth dreams likely do not mean anything serious.

Nevertheless, dreams about teeth trauma are strikingly common. Various cultures, religions, and individuals have offered frameworks for interpreting these types of dreams, but the topic has historically been approached with more superstition than science.

Why Do We Dream About Our Teeth Falling Out?

People have been guessing about the meaning of dreams for as long as humans have been around. From writers of Jewish texts like the Torah and Talmud to Ancient Egyptian and Greek philosophers, many thinkers originally believed dreams to be a means of communication from the divine. Dreams about teeth falling out were also thought to prophesy events, ranging from paying off debts to losing a loved one.

Over the course of history, these themes of loss and death have been consistent in many other interpretations. Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung both believed dreams to be symbols of deep psychological significance, and their influence has shaped many ideas about teeth dreams. It may come as no surprise that Freud believed dreams about teeth falling out were signs of subconscious sexual needs and fears. He did, however, recognize the possibility that they could be related to dental stimulation. From a scientific perspective, this seems much more plausible, but the idea was not scientifically pursued.

More recently, one aspect that puzzles scientific thinkers is that teeth dreams do not fit into the continuity hypothesis about dreaming. The continuity hypothesis asserts that the content of our dreams reflects the content of our waking thoughts and experiences. While dreaming about your teeth rotting or falling out can be a shocking experience, it isn’t something many people go through in waking life.

Currently, many ideas about teeth dreams are based on old superstitions that lingered. And, although these ideas have not been confirmed by science, they may still prime us to feel worried or anxious should we have a dream about our teeth falling out.

Is There a Scientific Explanation for Dreams About Losing Your Teeth?

Unfortunately, not many scientists have directly studied dreams about losing your teeth. In response to the lack of empirical evidence about teeth dreams, two researchers have delved deeply into the topic. Rozen and Soffer-Dubek from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, conducted a research study to better understand the potential relationship between teeth dreams, psychological distress, dental irritation, and sleep quality.

First, they recognized the two overarching themes of interpretation emerging from history and formed their hypotheses — are teeth dreams a symbolic manifestation of psychological distress, or are they a product of our brains incorporating dental stimulation into our sleep? To investigate, they enrolled undergraduate students to answer measures about dream themes, psychological distress, dental irritation, and sleep quality. The two key items they used to measure dental irritation were teeth tension, defined as a feeling of tenderness after waking, and teeth grinding during sleep.

The study found that teeth dreams correlated to teeth tension, but they did not correlate to teeth grinding. To interpret this finding, the researchers suggest that many people may not be aware that they grind their teeth during sleep, but they would still be aware of the tender feeling when they awoke. Interestingly, teeth dreams were not related to any problems with sleep or mental health. The study also did not find any correlation between teeth tension and other types of dreams.

This early research suggests two things: teeth dreams are related to dental irritation during sleep, and teeth dreams are uniquely related to dental irritation in a way that other types of dreams are not. While this particular study found no connection between teeth dreams and psychological distress, a previous study found that college students who had teeth dreams felt greater depression, anxiety, helplessness, and loss of control.

More broadly, this research supports the theory that some somatosensory stimulation influences the content of dreams. In other words, physical stimulation to our body and senses during sleep can affect what we dream about.

What Should I Do if I Dream About My Teeth Falling Out?

If you’ve recently had a dream about your teeth falling out, breaking, or rotting, there is likely nothing serious to worry about. To date, there has been no evidence to support the idea that teeth dreams arise from subconscious problems or predict negative life events.

Preliminary evidence suggests teeth dreams may relate to dental irritation during sleep and may be more common in people with depression or anxiety. If you are having frequent teeth dreams and feeling anxious about them, consider talking to a doctor or mental health professional about your worries. If you notice you are grinding your teeth at night, waking up with dental pain, or experiencing other oral problems, talk to your dentist to help you understand and manage your symptoms.

Falling teeth relates to vanity:

One theory is that dreams about your teeth reflect your anxieties about your appearance and how others perceive you. Your teeth help to convey an image of attractiveness and play an important role in the game of flirtation, whether it is flashing those pearly whites, kissing or necking. Thus, such dreams may stem from a fear of rejection, feeling unattractive, feeling sexually undesirable or from growing older. To support this notion, a dream research found that women in menopause reported a higher frequency of dreams about their teeth. Perhaps you feel unprepared for the task at hand and are afraid of getting ridiculed. These dreams are often an over-exaggeration of your worries and anxieties. In most cases, all your worrying is for nothing. Sometimes what you imagine is far worse than what is the reality.

Falling teeth relates to powerlessness:

Teeth are used to bite, tear, chew and gnaw. In this regard, teeth symbolize power. And the loss of teeth in your dream may be from a sense of powerlessness. Are you lacking power in some current situation?  You feel frustrated when your voice is not being heard. You may be experiencing feelings of inferiority and a lack of self-confidence in some situation or relationship in your life. This dream may be an indication that you need to be more assertive and believe in the importance of what you have to say.

Falling teeth relates to health:

In traditional dream interpretation books, dreams of missing or losing teeth pointed to malnutrition or poor diet. This notion may still be applicable to some dreamers. The dream could also be a sign of poor dental health and that you need to visit a dentist.

Falling teeth relates to death:

We don't usually believe that dreams are an omen or a prediction of some future event. However, we have received numerous emails regarding dreams of  loose, rotten, falling, or missing teeth and how it indicates that a family member or close friend is very sick or near death. We are including it as a possible meaning of your falling teeth dream and you can decide for yourself.

Falling teeth relates to money:

To dream that your teeth is falling out signifies that there will be money coming to you. This notion is based on the old tooth fairy tale. If you lose a tooth and leave it under the pillow, a tooth fairy would bring you money.

Falling teeth relates to deception:

According to the Chinese, there is a saying that your teeth will fall out if you are telling lies. Thus the dream may imply that you are being untruthful or deceitful about some matter.

When deciphering your falling teeth dream, look at what is happening in your waking life that could bring about the dream. Teeth dreams may occur when you are in a new relationship, when you switch jobs, or during a transitional period in your life.

I dreamed of teeth in a dream

Many will agree with the statement that our dreams carry an omen of events in the future. No wonder they talk about prophetic dreams, and many women can boast of having such dreams. After all, it is women who have the most developed intuition, well, it is so inherent in nature. Jumping out of bed, we immediately begin to analyze what we dreamed about, what it could mean, and what awaits us in the future. There are a lot of options and interpretations of dreams.

Our dreams are varied, they can be colorful or black and white, in a dream we can feel everything, smells of color, joy, even pain and anxiety. After some dreams, we wake up in good spirits, with the feeling that life has been successful. But after bad dreams, we wake up in a cold sweat, with a feeling of panic fear. To such dreams, undoubtedly, dreams about teeth can be attributed.

I dreamed of teeth in a dream: what does a dream mean?

It is worth starting with the fact that there can be a lot of interpretations of such dreams. And not always teeth, whether they are sick, beautiful, healthy, dream just like that. And this is not only about an omen of something, but it can also be associated with upcoming events.

Few of us go to the dentist without fear, with joy, and even skipping. A visit to the dentist is fear, fear of pain in the first place, of dental instruments that inspire horror, not to mention the sound of a drill. And if a visit to the dentist's office is planned in the near future, then dreams about teeth, and in any form, most likely, will mean little.

Dreams reflect our experiences, fears, what we constantly think about, fear, worry about, or, vice versa, are happy about. Sometimes, our fears in dreams are reflected in a very veiled way, but if you think about it and figure it out, then everything is logical and everything is explainable.

Teeth are located in the oral cavity, and are inextricably linked with the body, in dreams teeth can be positioned as the most expensive and closest, and both animated, for example, our relatives, loved ones, and inanimate - a recently bought expensive car, an important transaction at work on which too much depends, and so on.

If you have problems with your own health or personal life, then you may have dreams that your teeth are not healthy, there are large black carious cavities in your teeth, or they simply crumble and fall out. If there are any problems with relatives and loved ones, then our worries about their health and affairs can be expressed as a toothache. Even quarrels with loved ones can be expressed as the loss of one of the teeth.

Our unfinished business, some failures can be expressed in the fact that there is a toothache or large cavities, but we do not go to the dentist to solve them, there are excuses and excuses. Such dreams are dreamed from night to night, until the problem is solved, and we do not find the strength in ourselves to solve it.

There is an opinion that each tooth is associated with a certain relative. The front teeth are associated with children and relatives in the nearest knee, with the upper ones being boys, men, and the lower ones, respectively, the fair sex. The fangs, as the teeth are prominent and powerful, are related to the parents. But the remaining chewing teeth, or as they are also called molars, are a close and beloved environment.

Interpretation, interpretation of sleep according to the dream book

Teeth can be dreamed not only as sick, ugly and falling out - there are a lot of options. Dreams are diverse, and it is not possible to describe everything. It must be remembered that our dreams are a reflection of the events taking place in life, and sometimes an omen. But do not get hung up, because thoughts are material, and if you set yourself up for negativity and certainly wait for some tragic events, then they will not keep you waiting long.

I dreamed of healthy and white teeth

One of the most pleasant dreams is the contemplation of healthy, white beautiful teeth, especially for those with problem teeth or bite problems. Such a dream carries only positive emotions, and, accordingly, the meaning will also be positive. Many dream books say that healthy and white teeth come off for good luck and better health, indicating material well-being. In the near future, there will be no problems, as they say - life is getting better.

In addition, especially for owners of problems in the oral cavity, to dream of healthy, white teeth - the fulfillment of desires, finding happiness, true friendship or even love. If in the recent past one had to go through certain trials, then beautiful, white healthy teeth can be positioned as a return of lost values, a return to a normal life track after severe trials.

I dreamed of bad, sick teeth

Bad teeth in real life, not a very good sign, especially in a dream. Many will say that seeing bad, sick teeth in a dream is a bad sign, expect trouble. Moreover, the troubles are so diverse that even without that, teeth that constantly bring misfortune, a dream about them causes panic fear.

So, according to some interpretations, dreaming of teeth with a defect, caries can mean numerous misfortunes, the collapse of hopes, various diseases and even poverty. If you had such a dream, then you should reconsider your attitude to life, work schedule and stop working for wear and tear, try to get rid of unnecessary stress, otherwise the dream will turn out to be prophetic - real health problems will form.

A dream in which the teeth break or crumble can speak of physical fatigue, the work of the body at the limit and the rapid development of the disease.

A tooth fell out in a dream

In real life, a tooth falling out is a bad event, with the only exception (falling out of milk teeth is a physiological process). So in a dream, fallen teeth are a very unfavorable sign that promises trouble with close relatives or loved ones.

So, according to the interpretation of some dream books, if one tooth falls out, it is worth waiting for bad news, but if there are more teeth that have fallen out, then it is necessary to wait for the onset of difficult times, due to one's own negligence.

But teeth that have fallen out can speak of good things. So, for example, if teeth fall out and grow again, and such a dream was dreamed by older people, with the presence of adult children and grandchildren, this may indicate that children are entering a new, adult life, and new teeth that have grown symbolize grandchildren.

If all the events of sleep take place in a dental office where teeth are being extracted, then the meaning of this dream is reduced to an early and protracted illness. Sometimes, tooth extraction occurs on its own, in which case it is worth waiting for the sad news.

Loss of teeth during sleep can occur with or without blood. So in the event of the appearance of blood - a very sad sign and many will talk about impending grief with loved ones, often teeth that have fallen out with blood promise the death of a loved one or loved one. Yes, and problems with their own health can also be. Lost teeth without blood also do not speak of anything good. It can be said that a lost, lost tooth is a real loss of the closest, but if with blood, then this is death, and not only physical, sometimes you can quarrel in such a way that it seems like the closest person is considered dead - he is not in our life. But a loss without blood indicates a serious quarrel with relatives, relatives, in other words, all relationships are terminated.

According to another interpretation, a pulled out tooth, especially a rotten one, speaks of getting rid of problems, negative thoughts that interfere with the way of life and full enjoyment of all the delights of life.

Sometimes, during the whole sleep, the teeth gradually fall out or are removed, and as a result, the jaw is left simply without teeth. Such a dream speaks of a feeling or even a real failure in life, or of an impending serious illness. If in a dream to see a completely toothless person who smiles is a good sign, this indicates that the intrigues of the enemies will not pass, the enemies will not succeed.

In addition to the "civilized" loss of teeth, in a dream, and in real life, you can lose your teeth in a fight when your teeth are knocked out. In this case, it is necessary to take a closer look at your affairs. Seeing broken and destroyed teeth in a dreamland means a threat to one's own health, or career.

I dreamed of dental treatment

On the one hand, dental treatment will speak of getting rid of problems, worries, diseases. We have found a solution and are actively using it, but dental treatment in a dream can also carry a negative message. There are many options for dental treatment, for example, if you dream of direct treatment using a drill - the dentist drills your teeth, then such a dream suggests that an awkward situation may soon be created from which you need to try to get out. For young girls, in this interpretation there is a special note, if you had such a dream, you need to be prepared for a scandal in the sphere of your inner circle.

If you dream about artificial teeth (“false teeth”), then this indicates that there is insincere love in the environment, love with benefits, or simply there are insincere, fake friends. Also, an artificial jaw can talk about imminent tests.

Such dental treatment as implantation, installation of crowns, especially gold ones, promises profit, means unexpected wealth. In general, the establishment of teeth, crowns, or even the simple installation of a filling in a dream, speaks of bringing positive things to life, and not necessarily money, wealth can be interpreted in different ways. According to another interpretation, a tooth is like a woman’s womb, and a filling means a nascent life, in other words, filling teeth means pregnancy.

I dreamed of loose teeth

There are just as many options for interpreting loose teeth in a dream. So, according to many dream books, a loose tooth must be positioned as oneself. The loosening of the tooth means the precariousness of the situation, the need to make a choice, to lean in a certain direction, to make a decision, in the end. The decision is complex and a lot can be at stake, hence the dreams. Simply put, such a dream indicates an upcoming choice.

According to another opinion, loose teeth “ask” to take a closer look at your health, otherwise, the development of the disease will not take long.
