Can energy drinks make you depressed

Can Energy Drinks Make You Have Mood Swings? | Healthy Eating

By August McLaughlin Updated November 28, 2018

Hectic schedules and sleep deficiencies lead many Americans to rely on caffeine for heightened alertness. Energy drinks, while convenient sources of the stimulant, have caused concern for many health care professionals due to their rich content of sugar, caffeine and other stimulants, such as guarana and taurine. Consuming these ingredients in excess can cause a variety of complications, including mood swings.

Stimulant Effects

Caffeine and other stimulants pass quickly into your body tissues and brain, exciting your brain and nervous system. Even when consumed at low levels, caffeine can cause harmful effects that tinker with your moods, such as a rapid heart rate, sleep difficulties, anxiety, depression and restlessness. Because energy drink manufacturers are not required to list caffeine content on product packaging, it's difficult to determine how much caffeine and other stimulants you're consuming. Some varieties contain over 500 milligrams of caffeine, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, which is equal to 14 cans of caffeinated soft drink. Stimulants can also offset blood sugar control, which can cause mood swings.

Reported Problems

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports that, from 2007 to 2011, the number of emergency room visits involving energy drinks doubled in the United States from 10,068 visits in 2007 to 20,783 in 2011. During this time, there were more patients age 18 to 39 than any other age group, but the largest growing increase was in people age 40 or older. Reported mood-related complications of energy drinks include depression, anxiety, lethargy, hallucinations and mania.

Consumption Suggestions

There are no official guidelines for energy drink consumption, but, due to health risks, the American Academy of Pediatrics discourages intake by children and adolescents. Densie Webb, a registered dietitian and contributing writer for "Today's Dietitian," recommends that adults consume not more than one 16.9-ounce can per day and avoid mixing the drinks with alcohol, which increases your risk for side effects. Avoid energy drinks if you have a medical condition, such as high blood pressure or arrhythmia, or seek pre-approval from your doctor.

Mood Balance Through Diet

In addition to managing stress and getting sufficient sleep and hydration, altering your eating habits can help prevent mood swings. Joy Bauer, a registered dietitian in New York City, recommends that those prone to moodiness eat balanced meals or snacks every four to five hours to provide brain and body with constant fuel and to prevent blood sugar imbalances. Pair complex carbohydrate sources, such as whole grains and fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, with lean protein sources, such as low-fat dairy products, tofu and fish, for best results. Omega-3 fat sources, such as fatty fish and flaxseed, can also help keep your brain functioning sharply and your moods in check.

REIGN Energy Drink.

I have tried the Strawberry Sublime and it tastes good. It felt like fresh strawberry with a little sweet and a little sour aftertaste.  It has a slightly similar flavor to dragon fruit. Despite having a similar delicate taste, this fruit is distinguished by its sweet aroma.

A can of Reign normally costs approximately $1.50 to $2, which is very reasonable pricing from my perspective.

Celsius

Celsius is an energy drink that comes in three varieties, each with a unique flavor. Celsius is also available in ready-to-drink cans and powdered form in sachets.

Celsius also has high caffeine content, ranging from 200mg to 300mg depending on the category. Celsius has a low-calorie count that will not interfere with your total diet, and it is also sugar-free.CELSIUS Energy Drink.

I’ve only tried a couple of varieties of Celsius energy drinks so far, but they haven’t disappointed me. The fruity flavors are fantastic, and there was no odd aftertaste, which I normally get with a lot of energy drinks.

Celsius costs roughly $2.50 per can, which isn’t the cheapest option available, but it’s also not outrageous.

Zipfizz

Zipfizz is a powdered energy drink that comes in tubes and must be blended with water to produce a drink.

Zipfizz has 100mg of caffeine, 20 calories, and zero sugar per serving.

Zipfizz also contains several vitamins, minerals, and natural substances such as green tea extract and guarana. One of the advantages of Zipfizz is the variety of flavors available.Zipfizz Energy Drink.

It doesn’t taste horrible, and it offers me a wonderful energy boost, however, it does leave me thirsty afterward.

Each tube of Zipfizz costs around $2, which is well priced, but there are probably better-value solutions available.

Monster Zero Ultra

Monster Energy Drink is a powerful drink that will keep you going all night if you need to cram for a test or finish an important assignment.

Monster Energy Zero is a calorie and sugar-free energy drink.Monster Zero Ultra.

You may enjoy the full-flavor Monster taste without any calories or sugar, as well as a refreshing citrus flavor to compliment the Monster’s original taste, with Zero Ultra.

Narcologist Julia Ratushnaya answers the question

– Energy drinks – soft or low alcohol highly carbonated drinks. They include tonic substances, most often caffeine (in some cases, extracts of guarana, tea or mate, containing caffeine) and other stimulants. Recently added taurine.

The maximum dose of energy drinks is 1 can per day. Exceeding this dose may lead to an increase in blood pressure or blood sugar. We must not forget: the vitamins contained in energy drinks cannot replace the multivitamin complex we need. nine0005

In case of heart disease, hypertension, such drinks should not be drunk at all.

Is it true that energy drinks provide the body with energy? On the contrary, like any other stimulant, caffeine, which is contained in energy drinks, leads to the depletion of the nervous system. Its action lasts an average of 3-5 hours, after which the body needs rest. Plus, caffeine is addictive. Many energy drinks are high in vitamin B, which causes heart palpitations and tremors in the limbs. nine0005

If the allowable dose is exceeded, tachycardia, psychomotor agitation, increased nervousness, and depression are not excluded. Taurine in energy drinks is several times more than allowed, and glucuronolactone in 2 cans of the drink is 500 times more than the norm.

When using energy drinks, remember:

- do not exceed the daily dose of caffeine

- after the end of the energy drink, the body needs rest to restore resources

- do not drink drinks after sports - both of which increase blood pressure. nine0005

Drinks should not be consumed by pregnant women, children and adolescents, the elderly, those with hypertension, diseases of the cardiovascular system, glaucoma, sleep disturbances, increased excitability and sensitivity to caffeine.

Caffeine is eliminated from the blood after 3-5 hours, and then by half. Therefore, it is impossible to mix tonics and other caffeinated drinks during this time - you can greatly exceed the allowable dose.

Probably everyone knows about the dangers of alcohol. But many don't realize the damage that energy drinks do to health. nine0005

At first glance, non-alcoholic energy drinks contain completely harmless ingredients: caffeine, sugar, flavors, vitamins. However, the whole question is the concentration of these components. One cup of coffee contains 65 to 125 mg of caffeine. To get the effect commensurate with the effect of one can of energy drink, you need to drink 4 cups of coffee. But the number of certain components in different types of energy drinks is different.

"If you consider each element of energy drinks separately, you can even see the benefits, their combination is also not alarming. But the uncontrolled dose, the need to drink more and more lead to an overabundance of seemingly harmless substances. They can lead to unpleasant health consequences", - said the director of the Scientific Center for Personalized Psychiatry Nadezhda Solovieva, her words are quoted by the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry. nine0103
Vadim Krylov, the founder of the Right Diet nutrition instructions, agrees with Solovieva: “There is a huge concentration of caffeine in one can of energy drinks with a volume of 300 milliliters - like in seven cups of coffee, this is a huge blow to our nervous system, the cardiovascular system, which does not passes without a trace."

According to doctors, the so-called "liquid batteries" give a momentary effect, a person feels a sudden surge of mental and physical strength. But after an hour and a half (or a little more), he feels a decline. nine0005

"After the energy drink, a person feels great, he is active, agile, he has a huge amount of ideas and energy, but this is all at once. Then the nervous system fails, the person sleeps for a long time, feels overwhelmed," the expert notes.

Such fluctuations in energy have a negative effect on the nervous system. Fans of "liquid batteries" often experience depression and irritability. In the event of an overdose, energy drinks can even lead to cardiac arrest.

According to the KonturNormativ reference and legal web service, on the territory of the Chechen Republic it is not allowed to retail and distribute non-alcoholic tonic drinks to minors, in children's, educational and medical organizations, on all types of public transport and in other socially significant places.

The relevant rules are indicated in article 3 of the Law of the Chechen Republic of 04/26/2013.

Tonic drinks are often used by young people. Without suspecting it, they damage their health. After all, society has not yet formed a stable opinion about the negative impact of energy drinks. nine0005

But life is like that - sometimes what we perceive as undesirable turns out to be forbidden. Recognize. Take into account. Take care of yourself and loved ones. Health has no price.
