    The Mantawauk Caves

On the night of May 10, 2007, three boys entered a cave in Mantawauk County, Tennessee. Only one made it out alive. The other two were found ten days later. They had been attacked by someone - or something. The investigation that followed revealed town secrets as old as the caves themselves and put a third teenage boy, James Fincher, on death row. This haunting narrative follows Julien Solas, an amateur writer and James' friend who’s been haunted by the events ever since. Now, with Fincher's execution looming, Julien returns home to reconcile his past and uncover the truth behind the killings. Created by filmmaker Dan Bush, The Mantawauk Caves is a riveting, immersive, binaural audio experience that weaves together the narrative threads of social drama, supernatural horror, and psychological thriller. A co-production of Blumhouse Television, iHeartPodcasts, and Psychopia Pictures. Starring Jonathan Tucker (Westworld) and Edi Gathegi (The Harder They Fall). Headphones recommended.

    Letters from Sing Sing

In December of 2002, NBC News producer Dan Slepian got a letter from a New York state prison. It was from a man serving 25 years to life for murder. And it ended with a desperate plea: look into my case. Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez had been convicted of killing a retired New York City police officer, but he insisted he didn’t do it. Dan was skeptical. Prosecutors said five eyewitnesses had sworn JJ was the killer. Could five people be wrong? So Dan began to dig. What he discovered went far beyond just JJ’s case. And 20 years later, it’s still unfolding. Letters from Sing Sing tells the story of a man convicted of murder, a journalist, and the letter that changed both of their lives. New episodes drop every Monday through March 27, 2023.

Theater Perm Theater "At the Bridge" in Moscow

IRISH AND RUSSIAN - BROTHERS FOREVER!
(review of the play; photo by Polina Koroleva)

The Perm theater "At the Bridge" can be called not only "the only mystical theater in Russia" (as its founder and chief director Sergei Fedotov characterizes his offspring), but also "the only geographical one in Russia" - for Fedotov's repertoire of foreign playwrights is inconceivable without deep immersion in regional studies. The result is obvious: the productions of Belarusian authors in the Belarusian language were applauded in Minsk, and the plots of the Georgian hinterland embodied on stage were admired in Tbilisi. But a special place in the theatrical geography of "At the Bridge" is occupied by Ireland, on the stormy shores and in the dark stone pubs of which Fedotov and his comrades have been more than once.

We owe the bridge from the Urals to Connaught to Martin McDonagh - he is better known as a film director ("Lie to the bottom in Bruges", "Three billboards on the border of Ebbing, Missouri" and others), but first of all this great patriot of little Ireland is a playwright . Possibly the best playwright of our time. Fedotov opened this incarnation of McDonagh for Russia, holds the international McDonagh festival every two years, and "At the Bridge" until recently was the only theater that staged all 8 of his plays without exception. Was - because a few years ago McDonagh wrote 9th play "Very, very dark matter", where one of the characters is a black midget woman. Previously, Fedotov was the only director whom McDonagh allowed to make productions without real blacks, using blackface, unthinkable in the West. The production of "Dark Matter" was supposed to open the festival in 2022, but ... either politics intervened, or the absurdity should be absolute, but this time there was no concession. There was also no suitable actress in Russia, and "Dark Matter" passed by "At the Bridge", and Fedotov began to look for another play for the premiere.

However, the romance with McDonagh for Permians turned into a romance with Ireland as a whole, and the Irish repertoire has long been replenished with other authors. Sergei Fedotov introduces the premiere of the play "Irish Hero - Pride of the West" based on the play "Playboy of the Western World" by John Sing with a short tour of the props. Many things in the interior of the pub are truly Irish, others are older than the time of the play, and each has its own story of the journey from the Atlantic to the Kama.

Well, then comes the action, at the sight of which you somehow begin to believe those conspiracy theorists and adherents of the "New Chronology", who believe that Irishs and Russians are one and the same people. The only difference is that a Russian man drinks vodka and does it at home, while an Irish man drinks whiskey and does it in a pub. What makes the director's work easier: the pub is the only place of action of the "Irish Hero" through which, in 2.5 hours of stage time, not the entire population of a remote village by the sea passes, judging by the appearance - about 1930s.

The characters performed by Permian actors (and Fedotov's actors are wonderful!) are immensely colorful: the sharp, angular, marriageable beauty Pegin Mike at the bar of the pub, her fiancé Shoon Q, funny in his absurdity, a stern but good-natured father with an eternal retinue of drunkards, powerful the widow Queen with a bottle of moonshine in her bosom ... Their life is boring and measured, until it is invaded by the same Irish hero - a tramp who allegedly committed a terrible atrocity in his village and is now running from revenge and authorities, in each subsequent retelling, increasing the scale of his deed . But a crime or a feat is not even so important: he simply DONE, and for the villagers he became a hero because he broke the usual regularity of years.

In general, the plot of the "Irish Hero" is not so important. This performance takes its toll not so much on the development of history as on color and play. And in this, probably, Fedotov's trademark mysticism is manifested: at the same time, to be imbued with the originality of a distant, small, proud country, and to see something indescribably dear in this.

Olga Sorokina March 2, 07:37

"The Irish Hero - the Pride of the West" based on the play by John Sing is another contribution to the collection of "Irish performances" of the theatre.
The theater has been developing this direction for a long time and has, perhaps, the largest collection of performances based on the plays of Martin McDonagh. Oh, if you want to feel the Irish spirit, then you should definitely watch the performances of this theater. I have never met a more colorful atmosphere.
"Irish Hero" also promised real Irish black humor.
Fans of the genre will be satisfied, as were we. Hall now and then shook a wave of laughter. Yes, and how to resist when this is on stage!
The hero who caused universal adoration and admiration turned out to be a frail and unlucky killer who hacked to death his own father with a shovel. HERO? Oh yeah! This is exactly what the inhabitants of a quiet village on the edge of the cold sea think. After all, in order to decide to kill, you need courage, determination and strength.
And now, thanks to everyone's attention, right before our eyes, a real transformation of an ordinary and even a little cowardly boy into a hero takes place. He himself, having decided to live up to expectations, suddenly really begins to feel like a hero and a winner. Vildan Valiev, by the way, brilliantly copes with the image of Christopher Mehone, evoking both a feeling of pity and admiration for his hero. Something, but Christie got more than admiration. Almost the entire female half of the island fell victim to the image of the "brave killer". And peasant girls, and the most enviable bride of the district, Pegin Michael (Anastasia Perova), and the lively and enterprising widow Queen (Irina Molyanova). Moreover, each of the women expressed their interest in the hero in their own way. And it's very fun to watch! And behind the shrill girls who filled up the guy with all sorts of gifts and treats, it’s completely funny :)
In general, there are a lot of funny things in the play. Good quality dark humor! Humor, in which irony is intertwined with the local Irish flavor, forming an explosive mixture.
But if you don’t like or don’t understand black humor, then ... I sympathize with you in advance, because you don’t laugh when you hear about the “fat of my heart”, or when you see someone once again trying to stick their fingers inside an open wound so that just feel someone's brains, well, impossible! No matter how wild it may seem at first glance.
Comedies in the spirit of McDonagh are precisely this and are distinguished by the fact that they make you laugh at what at first glance is not funny. And it's a great reboot!
But the most important feature of the performance is that through all this "blackness" and absurdity, very serious issues of relations between parents and children, between men and women, between the individual and society run like a red thread. Watching how sometimes the attitude of each of the characters towards the main character changes rapidly and drastically, one involuntarily thinks about how weak a person is, how driven and subjective.
But back to the play. As always with Sergei Fedotov, every detail is thought out on stage. This applies to the scenery, and costumes, and acting.
Gestures, intonations - everything is not just like that, everything works for a common goal, revealing each of the characters as much as possible and strengthening the necessary semantic accents. Oh, how the father (Vladimir Ilyin) blessed the young! During this scene, I shed a tear))))))))
Widow Queen is generally a continuous charm every second. But also the moments when you watch how the girls are trying to look into a small window, or how the hero’s barely alive father crawls into the house, or how, with the last of his strength, the hero clings to a pole at a moment when his life hangs in the balance - all these moments explode in bright flashes in the head, leaving a long visual aftertaste.
Thanks to the beloved theater "At the Bridge" for another "Irish masterpiece"
It was wonderful!

Well, it wasn't without mysticism either :)

Zhanna Kirsheva March 1, 04:29

Tour of the Perm theater "At the Bridge" is always an event. Each visit of the legendary theater to the capital is accompanied by well-deserved soldier outs. This time, the author's theater of Sergei Fedotov brought 3 performances at once. I managed to visit two of them. Today I will tell you my impressions of the premiere I brought - "The Irish Hero - the Pride of the West".

The play is based on a play by John Sing, a recognized classic of Irish dramaturgy, who had a great influence on Martin McDonagh. In the center of the plot is a young guy Christopher Mehone (played by Vildan Valiev), who quite unexpectedly breaks into the everyday life of a tavern keeper Michael James (Vladimir Ilyin), his daughter Pegin Mike (Anastasia Petrova) and local residents of a small Irish village. The stranger suddenly confesses to the murder of his own father and becomes a real hero in the eyes of local residents, inexperienced with events. From that moment on, all women from the widow Queen (Irina Molyanova) to peasant women (Anastasia Ledneva, Milena Khmylova, Tatyana Golendukhina, Victoria Androsova) begin to compete for the attention of a stranger. But everything turns upside down when ****** father of Christopher (Ilya Baboshin) suddenly appears in the village. Who is this resurrected old man, a ghost or an impostor? This is up to the audience to find out for themselves. Rest assured, the ending will amaze you for sure.

The trademark of the Permian theater "At the Bridge" is recognizable from the very first seconds, this incomparable atmosphere of a backwater, where interesting events include someone's funeral, black humor, moonshine by the river and a mixture of Irish daring and hopelessness of the outback. Very colorful and detailed scenery, an amazing game of actors who seem to really come from an Irish village stuck somewhere on the ocean. Each performance of the Perm theater "At the Bridge" is an incredible experience and a special aesthetic pleasure for me. Everything that happens in this absurd story is surprisingly funny! You will see an interestingly staged and simply brilliantly played dark comedy that will cause a storm of emotions in you. No one will leave without food for thought)

"IRISH HERO - THE PRIDE OF THE WEST"

The premiere play "Irish Hero - the Pride of the West", which Perm Theater "At the Bridge" brought to Moscow for the first time, has an interesting backstory. It might not have happened if the famous Irish playwright Martin McDonagh had allowed Sergei Fedotov to stage his new 9th play (and all 8 plays were staged in Perm!) without the obligatory midget black woman. But the search for an actress with such parameters in Russia was not successful, and according to tradition, it is necessary to open the Martin McDonagh festival in Perm in 2022 only with an Irish play. Therefore, when John Sing's play “The Playboy of the Western World” by John Sing fell into the hands of the director, he immediately understood what was needed!

Despite the fact that the author of this play was born in the 19th century, the original humor that spurts from it has not faded, been moth-eaten or lost at all. This is because humor is Irish, and the Irish don’t have fun without a good reason, you can’t fool an Irishman for nothing, so if there is a reason to have fun, then in 100 years it’s as fresh as a rose from your own garden or like beer from a rustic Irish pub.

The shortest Irish joke goes like this: "An Irishman was walking past a pub...". And then everyone laughs, because they know that it will be fun. The plot of the play is also based on how a murderous vagabond passed by a small pub.

No matter what happens on the stage, the performance is staged in the genre of "ancient Irish comedy", which turns out to be absolutely identical to the genre of Russian vaudeville. In the original title of the play, there is the word "playboy", which was replaced by "hero" in translation, but the nuance is fundamental. In one Irish village from another Irish village brings a young man who killed his own father with a shovel. Each time, with the retelling of the story of the murder, it acquires additional details from the “cut and cut” series, and the admiration of the listeners increases exponentially.

The rumor about the arrival of a real hero instantly spreads throughout the village, and the next morning the local pub, where he was given shelter, attacked almost the entire female free part of the village, and the overwhelming admiration for the accomplished feat makes one ignore the natural modesty and obvious indecision of the guy . The main struggle for the attention of Christopher (Vildan Valiev) unfolds between the daughter of a local tavern keeper Pegin Mike and the widow Queen. These roles are amazingly played by Anastasia Perova and Irina Molyanova. The first, decisive and stern marriageable girl with the hateful fiancé Shoon Q (Vasily Skidanov) curling around her, the second, an experienced and assertive woman with a lifesaver for all occasions in the form of a bottle of self-made moonshine in her apron pocket. Although, by all indications, the free heart of the newly-minted hero quickly migrated to the property of the cutie Pegin, but the businesslike fighting widow does not want to part with the handsome man so easily.

The main problem with this performance is how to stop praising and whom to single out? The cast is so sparkling and energetic, so bright and harmonious that it resembles a music box, looking inside which to see where such wonderful music is coming from, you see a complex mechanism, hammers are knocking, bells are ringing.

Alexander Shamanov wonderfully and funny played the small farmer Jimmy Farrell, always drunk, with his mouth always open. Ilya Baboshin, old man Mekhone resurrected from the dead, is incomparable. Peasant girls Anastasia Ledneva, Milena Khmylova, Tatyana Golendukhina, Victoria Androsova - it's a pleasure to look at them. Vasily Skidanov is expectedly good in the role of Shoon Q, the unlucky groom.

But, perhaps, the image of the widow Queen created by Irina Molyanova - speech, gestures, facial expressions, postures - is the most noticeable and colorful in this performance. Fedotov always uses this actress in a variety of and diametrically different acting guises, and in any role Irina is remembered for her unconditional organic and juicy comedy, even in dramatic roles. Among the inhabitants of the village there is not a single candidate for husbands suitable for her heroine, she personally sent her husband to the forefathers, cracking him with dung pitchforks. The temperament of the widow Queen can be envied, it is almost impossible to resist pressure, “provincial immediacy” as Ilf and Petrov would say, ingenuity in seduction, practical mind and business acumen.

The real unconditionality of conditional circumstances has been created on the stage. Natural Ireland, and Russian actors are 100% Irish, the mosquito will not undermine the nose. John Sing, not McDonagh, but both Irish, so the substitution is imperceptible. A kind of humor, naive sentimentality, captivating sincerity, an ocean-sized love for their land.

"BEAST"
We try to talk about ***** using the past tense. Futuristic fiction is always about a fictional future that no one takes seriously, a distant unreal, fantasies "pretend", without a projection for today.

The performance of the Perm Theater "At the Bridge" "The Beast" about strange glowing bald ragamuffins is not about the future and the past - about the present.

Once upon a time there was a nuclear explosion on Earth - it looked like a giant sun. The miraculously surviving 1% of people walk around the globe in search of their own kind. They walk for years and those who meet the same moonlit human being are considered lucky. Inexpressible happiness when people of different sexes meet and form pairs, and they are born the same as they are luminous bald children.

The main characters in the play are a family where Father, Mother and Daughter form their own microcosm. Strange mutilated crippled people. They eat roots, are afraid of badgers, and follow the commandments of the Man with glasses over his eyes. He said not to go to the mountains - they bypass them. He said - multiply, and they are looking for a Friend for the Daughter. They search for a long time, traveled a lot, but over the years of wandering around the dead planet, they did not meet anyone except for a strange Beast, whose muzzle looks like their face, paws - like their arms and legs, only it does not glow, and long hair grows on its head . The Beast, which they drag along on a rope, has a strange thing that opens iron cans that contain "delicious". He can also make fire for a fire from a strange object. The beast at first spoke in an incomprehensible language, but then quickly learned a human one. The beast is good, kind, smart, but such as he once killed the Man with Glasses, so the family is afraid of him and considers him a freak. Everyone except Daughter. A bald, lame girl, resembling a bird whose wings are lined with a stone in flight, wants the Friend they are looking for to look at her with the same loving eyes as her Father looks at Mother. But for now, only the Beast is looking at her like that...

Surprisingly, these strange mutant people, who miraculously escaped death from explosion and radiation, do not remember their names, where they come from, or any other past, discover the ability to love each other tenderly. These outcast mutants have created a real little world of their own in a big and terrible world, filled it with love, they feel good and warm there. A family song in a screaming bird language, when the words are not clear, penetrates to the very depths of the heart.

The emotional attachment of the Daughter and the Beast before our eyes turns into something more - into touchingly expressed love feelings, the first and only in their lives. How beautiful are the scenes of love between Father and Mother! How tender are the scenes between the Daughter and the Beast, who are in love with each other!

The most natural theatrical magic and some kind of inhumanly lofty sacral acting transformation take place on the stage. There are no actors Vladimir Ilyin, Ekaterina Ponomareva, Anastasia Ledneva, Artyom Pitsyk on the stage - there is Father, Mother, Daughter, Beast. Vasily Skidanov (Friend), who can always be recognized even with his eyes closed by his characteristic manner of speech, is absolutely unrecognizable. Not a dense silver make-up, which is applied to the faces and clothes of the artists, shines - talent shines!

There is an outer side of the performance, an outer picture, where the characters only seem stupid and in some places weak-minded, all this is just an appearance. In their deepest essence, we meet the same principles that underlie our own existence. We see the same eternal human problems. In other words, in these anomalous luminous bald ragamuffins from the apocalyptic future, the modern viewer recognizes himself.
It is incredibly touching to understand that behind each of the simple heroes there is a personality, her small but human history, her hopes, desires, dreams.
And it's also incredibly painful to watch how the characters become cowed and suppress the desire to jump onto the stage and help ...

After the performance, the collective theatrical unconscious gives out a single thought, Sergei Fedotov, who staged this powerful performance, is a genius.

"The Idiot" Perm Theater "At the Bridge"

Once again this famous theater came to Moscow. The director and founder, Sergei Fedotov, is widely known for his productions throughout the country, and each performance gathers a full house and a lot of rave reviews. More often than others, performances based on Martin McDonagh, a modern Irish playwright in the genre of tragicomedy, sound. My choice fell on "The Idiot" by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, a great writer and brilliant director - it must be interesting, I thought.

Before the start, Sergei Pavlovich himself came on stage and said that the production would be classical, with respect for the writer, which I was glad about, and thanked the audience for such a warm welcome. There were those in the hall who, during this visit of the collective, watched all three performances presented.

When you go somewhere with high expectations, disappointment often sets in, so despite the good reviews, I went with a calm mind and an open heart.

The action begins with the train. In the back of the hall there is a wall, where the movement of the train is projected, and in the middle of its window, behind which the heroes sit, illuminated by the warm light of the carriage and swaying to the beat of the sound of the wheels. And everything here is beautiful and somehow provincial. Sometimes the noise of the train drowns out the words - and this only enhances the impression.

I would like to note the calmness and slowness of the action. Everything happens in a measured and meaningful way, as life was like in the 19th century, very believable, but not boring, on the contrary, there is time (and desire) to consider the details of the scenery, observe the emotions of the characters, and realize what is happening. As if the size of the novel does not weigh on the director and as if there is no clock in front of him with a limit of 3 hours of action. Therefore, we move smoothly in the flow of events, enjoying every scene.

Well, while “enjoying” when Prince Myshkin, played by Alexei Ulanovsky, told the general’s wife (Anastasia Perova) and her daughters about life in Switzerland and reached the point of reminiscing about the execution he had seen, suddenly something heavy squeezed my throat and an acute desire arose get out of here, abstract from the picture I presented, and only realizing that there were a lot of people around me, I was able to calm down and be surprised at what had happened. At the same time, nothing definitely terrible was said, only hints of the suffering of the condemned and the expression on the faces of the heroes. Very much.

No matter how much I saw the princes Myshkins, Alexei Ulanovsky quickly occupied all this space with his hero, subtly conveying all the features of the character's personality. Ivan Fedorovich Yepanchin was performed by Ilya Baboshin and for me he became the most comical character, starting with a rolling velvety voice, ending with his good-natured character and humor.

To describe all the characters and events, Dostoevsky needed a whole novel, so I will briefly say that each character has its own striking features and even tiny roles are played flawlessly.

High-level lighting work, scene zoning and spotlighting capture the characters and the surroundings. The scenery fully serves for all the ideas of the director, easily transforming. The soundtrack completes the experience. I felt completely immersed in what was happening.

Three hours flew by unnoticed, the omitted moments were voiceovered and the thread of the story continued logically. I, as a big fan of Dostoevsky's work, was satisfied with everything. I highly recommend getting acquainted with the work of the Perm Theater "At the Bridge" to all lovers of the stage.

The Perm Theater "At the Bridge" is an author's theater. All performances were staged by its creator and permanent artistic director, Sergei Fedotov.
Now there are 51 performances in the repertoire of the theater!!!
In February, the residents of the capital were once again able to see how rich and diverse the palette of performances created by Sergei Fedotov was.
Along with the last premiere - the play "The Irish Hero - the Pride of the West", the Permians also brought "The Idiot" by F.M. Dostoevsky, which has been in the theater's repertoire for eight and a half years.
The theater positions many of its performances as comedies - Old Irish comedy, provincial comedy, Soviet comedy, bourgeois comedy, etc.
Sergei Pavlovich defined the genre of his "Idiot" as "delusion", because many characters here are obsessed with some kind of obsession ...
In this production, he showed his commitment to the Russian psychological theater and, having reduced the action of the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky, focused precisely on creating accurate images of his characters. And he did it brilliantly!
The task set by the director for the actors - to maintain the correct psychological picture of their role for all three hours, everyone, without exception, performed simply meticulously.
Over the past years, many performers have changed in the play, but Vladimir Ilyin still plays Parfen Rogozhin - a brilliant, in my opinion, actor !!!
With what juicy colors he draws his violently ebullient merchant. Here is passion, and boldness, and unbridled jealousy that is eaten up.
And the object of passion of Parfyon, Nastasya Filippovna, Anastasia Ledneva and Milena Khmylova are now playing in the queue on the stage.
Here is also an interesting directorial move - these same actresses are also announced for the role of her complete opposite - Aglaya Yepanchina.
The same situation is with the performers of the roles of Prince Myshkin (Vasily Skidanov and Alexey Ulanovsky) and Ganya Ivolgin.
Well, we all know that the artists of this unique theater are capable of any acting roles!!!
Played this time:
Nastasya Filippovna - Anastasia Ledneva
Aglaya Epanchina - Milena Khmylova
Prince Myshkin - Alexey Ulanovsky
Ganya Ivolgin - Vasily Skidanov
It would be interesting, of course, to watch the play again when they switch roles.
I was very touched by the game of Alexei Ulanovsky. He, perhaps, was the most difficult of all - not only is the character “not of this world”, but the audience still has many associations with eminent performers of this role.
I believe, I believe, I believe!!! Alexei very organically existed on the stage in the image of a large naive child, who was drawn into a fatal game of passions, which inevitably led to a tragic ending.
The performance has an excellent scenography, which Sergei Fedotov always comes up with himself.
His action, as usual, is played out in gloomy tones (after all, it is not for nothing that the theater is also known as the only mystical theater in the world).
True, because of this twilight, I only saw the picture of Hans Holbein Jr. “The Dead Christ” hanging on the wall, and it is one of the most important artistic images in the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky! It turns out that "the gun did not fire" ...
The decor of the interiors in which the action takes place, this time, is very stingy, and this was justified - nothing distracts the viewer from following the relationship between the characters of the novel on stage.
The first scene is solved in a very unusual and interesting way - the meeting in the train car of Prince Myshkin and Parfyon Rogozhin.
There was deathly silence in the hall for all three hours - the audience watched the action intently.
At the end, the artists were waiting for a well-deserved storm of applause!

"The Idiot" of the Perm Theater "At the Bridge"
The tour of the Perm theater "At the Bridge" was a great success at the Theater Center "On Strastnoy".
The Perm theater "At the Bridge" has an extensive and varied repertoire, so diverse that the day before we are shown a play by a modern author, today a work by an Irish playwright of the early twentieth century, and tomorrow there will be "The Idiot" by Dostoevsky. That's about the "Idiot" I want to tell.
The founder, artistic director and director of the theater "At the Bridge" Sergei Fedotov does not get tired of repeating that in his theater he puts the classics just like the classics.
It's not that hard to keep three hours of an audience on an original play with an unexpected plot, but "The Idiot"! Read-re-read, seen-re-read, repeatedly filmed, and even an opera and ballet written on this topic. How can you keep the viewer in the hall, showing him a play based on the most famous work, and even staged without all sorts of tricks and technical bells and whistles. Not otherwise for this, the magic power of art must be present on the stage. And yes: this force is not only present in all the performances of the theater "At the Bridge", but appears before us in its unclouded brilliance. It is born thanks to the strict direction of Sergei Fedotov, his own low-key scenography, Dostoevsky's undistorted text and magnificent theater actors. As a result, the audience sits for three hours without moving, and in the final they give a wild ovation.
Of course, in three hours it is impossible to fit the whole novel, only scenes of a love triangle are shown. Or rather, a square . .. No, it's getting deeper and more complicated ... but schoolchildren can be taken to this production: Dostoevsky will settle correctly and forever in their heads.
The actors of the Perm theater "At the Bridge" never cease to amaze me: yesterday they were Irish peasants, and today they are the heroes of Dostoevsky.
Vladimir Ilyin, who yesterday was the owner of the tavern, today just as organically feels in the image of Parfyon Rogozhin. The leading roles of Myshkin and Rogozhin, Alexei Ulanovsky and Vladimir Ilyin, *********** our attention from the very first second of their appearance on stage, from the very first dialogue, even from the first phrases.
Anastasia Perova yesterday was an Irish marriageable girl, and today she is Elizaveta Prokofievna Yepanchina. Between these roles there is a huge dissimilarity in time, geographical and age. Yes: the actors of the Perm Theater "At the Bridge" are capable of doing miracles on stage. Whatever the actor, the star, whatever the role, the miracle. I won’t even list the actors who participated in the play “The Idiot”: I simply don’t have enough enthusiastic epithets.
After the performance, the thought crept into my head that a real Russian drama theater, oriented to the viewer who thinks and feels, can now be seen mainly in the provinces. There is too much competition in the capitals, too much effort is put in to stand out, to be noticed. As a result, quite often we get shocking for the sake of shocking, behind which meaning is lost, and indeed art in general.
Thanks to the Perm theater "At the Bridge" that it is, that it brings us its wonderful performances, thanks to Sergei Fedotov for staging these performances. And of course, a huge thank you to all the actors of the theater "At the Bridge", so wonderful, bright and talented.

The Irish are very strange people. It is sometimes completely impossible to understand the logic of their actions. But at the same time, there is something incredibly bewitching in their unhurried, some kind of alien island existence, in their absolutely unpredictable relationships both among themselves and with other people, in their very special sense of humor or bottomless sadness.
I am writing this text right after watching the infinitely beautiful film "The Banshee of Inisherin", which deservedly received several British Academy Film Awards last night. But now I want to tell not about him at all. Today it has become for me a kind of continuation of Friday's "Irish theatrical aftertaste".
There is a theater in Russia, the performances of which can reveal the depth and mystery of the Irish character, perhaps even better than the Irish themselves would do. And to my great happiness, I have repeatedly had the opportunity to see the wonderful reincarnation of actors from the cultural capital of the Urals into the inhabitants of a remote Irish village. And my new evening pleasure - the next premiere of the Perm theater "At the Bridge". Muscovites always look forward to tours of this theatre. In his repertoire, in addition to Russian classics, there is a whole scattering of the most talented productions based on the plays of Martin McDonagh (the creator of that very "Banshee Inisherin"). Tickets for theater performances invariably fly like hot cakes. So this time the Theater Center on Strastnoy experienced a serious invasion of fans of Sergei Fedotov and his actors. The Irish theme, so beloved by the director, was continued by the production based on the play by John Sing "The Irish Hero - the Pride of the West", indicated in the poster as an ancient Irish comedy.
The inhabitants of the Irish hinterland, already beloved by the audience, become participants in an incredible phantasmagoria with a completely unexpected ending.
Late in the evening, a stranger appears in a lonely pub, a vagabond, judging by his haggard appearance, who has been wandering through the fields and hills for several days. Of course he was taken in, warmed up and given a pint. But the Irish are also very curious. New people in such wilderness are a rarity, and they love to chat. And the guy told them that he cracked the skull of his own father with a shovel. Well, what, they brought the man, he could not stand the eternal bullying of his father, who called him an idiot and a freak, and in addition decided to marry an old widow, and hit the old man right in the potato field. Immediately he ran away and wandered for a week. And what do you think, what was the reaction to his confession? Fear, horror, the desire to hand him over to the authorities? Nothing like this. In the eyes of the whole village, he becomes a daring brave man, an unprecedented hero. Just think, decided ***** father! For such a thing, of course, you should leave to spend the night and offer a job in a pub. The parricide Christopher Mehone (just a brilliant performance by Vildan Valiev!) becomes the favorite of the locals, who affectionately call him Christie, completely captivates all the surrounding girls who immediately come running to see and feed him, the owner of the pub (Vladimir Ilyin), the loving widow Queen (hilariously funny Irina Molyanova), and most of all the owner's daughter Margaret (Anastasia Perova). Only the dull-witted betrothed Margaret Shawn Q (Vasily Skidanov), who unexpectedly lost his bride, is not happy. So everyone fell in love with the newly-minted hero for his dubious feat that the frail, lanky lad begins to seem to himself a brave and handsome man. Here it is, the power of public opinion. Christie's faith in himself becomes so strong that he not only wins all the prizes at the local holiday, but also proposes to Margaret. The widow Queen is trying in every possible way to intrigue, she herself has views of the "handsome", but she still has to give in to the guy in exchange for some of the dowry. And everything would be fine, they would all live in love and harmony, if suddenly a slightly unfinished, as it turned out, dad (Ilya Baboshin), who was looking for his prodigal son, had not suddenly appeared. And when the public finds out that the hero is not a hero at all, the fun begins. The opinion of the people is completely opposite. And this change hits the main character's self-esteem so sharply, like a butt (or a shovel), that for the sake of restoring his "reputation" he decides to finish off his father after all. But a comedy is a comedy - I will hint that not a single dad was hurt as a result, but such an unexpected courage of the son awakened the sleeping father's love. As for the rest, offended in the best feelings, Christie proudly, like Chatsky, retires from a society that did not understand him, leaving the people in bewilderment, and the failed bride in bitter regret that she lost.
It would seem that a completely absurd plot is given to the actors of the theater "At the Bridge" with such ease, naturalness and abyss of humor that there is not a trace left of the tragedy of the situation. And how hilariously the actors portray the tipsy inhabitants of the pub, how funny the actresses are in the roles of curious girls, and how all this slightly crazy Irish party becomes close to the audience in the course of the action! How unexpectedly these wonderful people become clear to us. They are so understandable that I want to call everything that happens on the stage not an Old Irish comedy, but an Irish comedy with a Russian soul.

"Irish Hero - Pride of the West" in the Perm theater "U Mosta"

Once again the Perm theater "U Mosta" came to Moscow. Once again, the tour was a resounding success. Three very different performances were shown. Different in time, spirit, drama, but absolutely the same in terms of an incredible amount of talent per unit area.
What is surprising: this time the tour did without McDonagh's plays, according to whose work the theater "At the Bridge" is a recognized expert. The tour took place without McDonagh, but not without Ireland: this time we saw a performance based on the play by the Irish classic of the early twentieth century, John Sing, "The Irish Hero - the Pride of the West."
So the theater "At the Bridge" can be considered not only an expert on Irish drama, but also an expert on the Irish spirit, Irish characters. After all, theater actors traveled to Ireland three times to feel, absorb and bring this spirit, these characters to the stage ...
The director and founder of the theater "At the Bridge" Sergei Fedotov staged a performance sparkling with acting talents, staged filigree. In "The Irish Hero" it is easy to slip into everyday life or, even worse, into the blackness, but Sergei Fedotov turned out to be a performance that is both funny and tragic, deep and fascinating at the same time. A performance in which each role is a sparkling diamond.
Oh, what actors in the theater "At the Bridge"! You absolutely believe them, despite the absurdity of the situation presented on the stage, despite the originality of the characters' characters, their way of life is so far from ours.
The action of the play takes place a long time ago in a remote Irish village on the shores of a cold sea, but Sergei Fedotov's performance turned out to be very modern, or rather timeless. The absurdity of the "Irish Hero" situation is easily correlated with our truly crazy world today. But how far we are from the sincerity of John Sing's heroes - we can no longer boast of the same sincerity, openness, directness.
The play "The Irish Hero - the Pride of the West" *********** the attention of the audience from the first minute and does not let go until the very end. I don’t know about others, but for several days now I have been walking under the impression of what I saw and felt. I keep replaying situations in my mind, trying to get deeper into the essence of the characters, into the essence of the story I've seen.
Absolutely everything works for the success of the performance: dim, restrained, authentic scenery (some items were even brought from Ireland and successfully built into the set design by Sergei Fedorov), equally dim, but absolutely authentic costumes, and, of course, the incredible talent of absolutely all the actors participating in staging. I can’t single out anyone, I just want to copy the entire program and put a lot of emotional enthusiastic emoticons in front of each actor’s name. But no, I can't resist: Vildan Valiev was simply born for the role of Christopher Mehone - the Pride of the West. Ilya Baboshin as Mekhone's father is both funny and tragic at the same time. Vladimir Ilyin, as always, absolutely exact hit in the role, this time in the role of the tavern keeper Michael James. And the role of his daughter is superbly, sharply, interestingly performed by Anastasia Petrova. And finally, Irina Molyanova - the widow Queen! This extraordinary actress in every role I have seen is so good that you are not even surprised by her next bright success.
Not a single actor of the Perm Theater "At the Bridge" appears on stage in the form of a technological plug. Everything, even very small roles of peasant women or farmers, is thought out to the smallest detail, everyone works for the success of the performance.
And what else is incredibly pleasing: very soon, already in May, the theater "At the Bridge" will again come to Moscow with new performances that I have not seen before. We wait!
