Introvert song lyrics

Introvert Song Lyrics for Every Frame of Mind - INFJ, HSP, Introverts

I’ve written about how music and introverts are intimately connected, but I thought it might be fun to share some of my favorite song lyrics that I’ve grown to love over the (many, many) years that understand the introvert in me.

What makes these song lyrics special is that not only can I relate to them, but they speak directly to my introverted soul. Some lyrics are light and hopeful, some are nostalgic, and others allowed me to sit in my dark place when I needed to, but all are me, in the most genuine and profound way.

Lyrics that Describe Introverts

These introverted song lyrics remind me of myself and my introverted ways. It’s very easy to relate to these lyrics and the familiarity is so soothing. I guess we could call it “comfort music”.

This first one, I’m sure you’ve heard a thousand times, but this whole song could be about an introvert’s self care. I didn’t even know which lyrics to use. I could have just as easily listed, “And all I can do is read a book to stay awake, and it rips my life away but it’s a great escape”. I wasn’t a particularly big fan of Blind Melon, but I still listen to this song.

“All I can say is that my life is pretty plain
I like watchin’ the puddles gather rain
And all I can do is just pour some tea for two
And speak my point of view”
Blind Melon, No Rain

“Who are we? Just a speck of dust within the galaxy?”
Keira Knightley, Lost Stars

“You see, her confidence is tragic, but her intuition magic”
Train, Meet Virginia

“You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one”
John Lennon, Imagine

“I’m never speaking up again
It only hurts me
I’d rather be a mystery”
John Mayer, My Stupid Mouth

“She listens like spring and she talks like June”
Train, Drops of Jupiter

“I don’t take coffee. I take tea, my dear”
Sting, Englishman in New York

“Oh look at how she listens
She says nothing of what she thinks”
Dave Matthews Band, Grey Street

“So tell me what you wanna do
You say, the world, it doesn’t fit with you”
Alabama Shakes, Gimme All Your Love

“Every time I try to lie down
Well my mind just gets away”
Amos Lee, Violin

Nostalgic Introvert Music Lyrics

Being an INFJ personality, my ties to my family are strong, so my mind is always drifting back to memories. So many songs connect to my past, and I cry at both the happy and sad memories they bring to the forefront of my mind.

John Mayer is sprinkled throughout this list because he really speaks the truth in his song lyrics. I can relate to so many of his songs. I was listening to him before I even got married.

Life happens so quickly, but this first song reminds us of how quickly life happens and points out the importance of acceptance and living in the moment; something I’m always learning.

“Don’t stop this train
Don’t for a minute change the place you’re in
And don’t think I couldn’t ever understand
I tried my hand
John, honestly, we’ll never stop this train”
John Mayer, Don’t Stop this Train

“Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life, I love you more”
The Beatles, In My Life

“Let’s not forget these early days
Remember we begin the same
We lose our way in fear and pain
Oh joy begin”
Dave Matthews Band, Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)

“Maybe I should try to find the old me
Take me to the places and the people that know me”
One Republic, Connection

“Oh, if only my life was more like 1983
All these things would be more like they
Were at the start of me”
John Mayer, 83

Lyrics for a Pained Heart

Everyone has negative emotions, and some introverted personality types may lean a little harder in this direction due to our inward-thinking tendencies, but especially if your inferior function is extraverted sensing (looking at you, INFJ and INTJ). We’ll just call this the “dark side”.

When INFJs or INTJs are under extreme stress (“in the grip”), we will use the most underdeveloped of our cognitive functions, which is extraverted sensing. This will manifest in negative behavior revolving around external sensations like binge-eating, drinking, mindlessly getting lost in TV, excessive cleaning, screaming, and loud or angry music.

There have been many times, in both my early years, and recently, where I just had to “sit” in my pain for awhile before moving on. I needed to to feel the anger and frustration, betrayal, or sadness. These songs helped me feel understood, and not so alone, and sometimes even allowed me to let go.

In regards to the first three songs, Soundgarden played a huge role in my young adult life. I would listen to them on replay. These songs represent some of the most difficult times of my life. And, sometimes, a life that didn’t even feel like my own.

The rest of the songs are riddled with self-doubt, failures, and feelings of being so stuck that I didn’t know what to do or who to turn to, but I always found my way, even if it took longer than expected.

“Yeah I’m gonna break I’m gonna break my
I’m gonna break my rusty cage and run”
Soundgarden, Rusty Cage

“Just a burden in my hand
Just an anchor on my heart
Just a tumor in my head
And I’m in the dark”
Soundgarden, Burden in My Hand

“Whatsoever I’ve feared has come to life
Whatsoever I’ve fought off became my life
Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded and now I’m doing time”
Soundgarden, Fell on Black Days

“I’m home.
I will not answer my phone.
Respectfully, leave me alone.
Family is asking “what’s wrong?”
I tell them “nothing I’m grown”.
I am a sensitive being.
I’m just an illusion not seen.”
Grabbitz, King / Ghost in a Song

“When you try your best but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse”
Coldplay, Fix You

“Anger wants a voice, voices wanna sing
Singers harmonize ’til they can’t hear anything
I thought that I was free from all that questionin’
But every time a problem ends, another one begins”
Vampire Weekend, Harmony Hall

“I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink
But now I’m insecure and I care what people think”
Twenty One Pilots, Stressed Out

“I’m stuck in the paint on the wall in a picture frame
White little house, but there’s nobody home
Stuck in a life that I didn’t want anyway
But I don’t even know
Where would I go if I ever got out of here?
Paint a new world with the colors I stole?
One of these days, yeah, I might just disappear
And you won’t even know”
The Mowglis, Norman Rockwell

Hope and Good Vibes

And, lately, I feel the need for better vibes; light-hearted beats and lyrics without such deep meanings; something to remind me of the good and encourage living life to the fullest, and more in the moment, rather than alway in the future.

Something I can just enjoy without all the overthinking and feeling.

It’s nice to just listen to something that makes me feel good. I’ve started a “happy playlist” just for this purpose. It’s great on a sunny day or when I need a little boost in my mood. They have become go-to songs for me, and I really love how they make me feel.

“This is your heart, it’s alive
It’s pumping blood”
NONONO, Pumpin’ Blood

“I hear it calling outside my window
I feel it in my soul (soul)
The stars were burning so bright
The sun was out ’til midnight
I say we lose control (control)”
American Authors, Best Day of My Life

“When you’re happy like a fool
Let it take you over
When everything is out
You gotta take it in”
Onerepublic, Good Life

“Someday I wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney top
That’s where you’ll find me”
Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, Over the Rainbow

“Wakin’ up too early
Maybe we could sleep in
Make you banana pancakes
Pretend like its the weekend now
We could pretend it all the time
Can’t you see that it’s just rainin’
There ain’t no need to go outside”
Jack Johnson, Banana Pancakes

“Hey, let your little light shine
Let your little light shine for the world to see
Hey, let your little light shine
Let your little light shine for the world to see”
Amos Lee, Let Your Little Light Shine

Song Lyrics for the Introvert

I could keep going and going when it comes to introverted music and lyrics, but I may just continue to add to this list anyway.

Music and its lyrics have a way of seeping inside us and sticking to our insides, only coming to the surface when we least expect it.

I love that music has such a powerful effect on my emotions. It’s just another beautiful form of artwork for our minds. It’s a little like magic, the way music helps us transcend time and places -and we all need a little magic in our lives.

Whatever it is, I feel it, I want it, I dance to it, and I am grateful for it.

What are a few of your introvert song lyrics on repeat? 🙂
