Letter #91, from Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles - T&P

In a regular feature on T&P, students who have gone to study abroad talk about the difference in approach to learning and share their impressions of the change of scenery. Olga Belaya entered the Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles, where, under the guidance of leading Hollywood experts, she studied plastic makeup and sculpture, and also learned to think simpler and not try to jump above her head.

— Where, what do you study, how long ago? How did it happen, what exactly is here?

- I graduated from Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles a year ago. I got there quite by accident. After graduating from a Russian university with a degree in Cinema and Performing Arts, I thought about what I still want to do in cinema. Most of my friends advised me to go to study as a makeup artist, but due to the prevailing stereotypes about this profession, I put it off: I was interested in it, but more as a hobby. When I nevertheless decided to master this profession, I categorically refused to study in Russia, so I began to look for a school in London (since I lived there at one time).

There were a huge number of schools in London, with different options and types of make-up, but with each school something new began to open up to me. Then I realized that this is a real art that I wanted to master right away. Wounds, burns, scars, fantastical creatures, zombies, goblins and many other images were revealed in the photographs. In a word, real art. I immediately wanted to go to such a school. And here I thought that London is, of course, wonderful, but the entire film industry is located in Hollywood. I just typed “cinema makeup school los angeles” in the search engine, but despite the fact that I got a list of various schools, I wanted to get into CMS.

— What was the admission process like? Was it possible to get a grant?

- Getting there turned out to be easy, unlike Vancouver Film School (where I thought to do the same), where you had to send your portfolio and it was desirable to have some kind of base, including a graduated art school. At CMS, you were taught from scratch. I simply filled out the application form on the website, sent an envelope with the necessary papers, which said that I graduated from a higher educational institution, and began to wait for the I-20 form, which I later went to the American consulate.

“Plastic makeup is not for girls who worry about their manicure. You need to be prepared for the fact that you will have to deal with cement, various chemical solutions, and even such a man's tool as a drill.”

The school, of course, offers grants, but only for US citizens. Let's say industry celebrities such as Dick Smith (The Exorcist and The Godfather), Ve Neill (Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands) and Fangoria Magazine offer a $10,000 grant, all you need to do is write a letter explaining why you are worthy of this grant and attach some of your work.

— Did you study at a Russian university? What memories?

- In 2008, I graduated from the Smolny Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences, as I already said, with a degree in Cinema and Performing Arts. Despite the fact that the university is part of the Faculty of Philology of St Petersburg University, it closely cooperates and receives sponsorship from Bard College in New York. In fact, I graduated from high school - that is, my acquired knowledge covered all possible specialties, from art to politics. And only the last two years were devoted to a more in-depth study of the chosen specialty, in my case, cinema. I am grateful to Smolny for trying to teach Russian students to think broadly, but, in truth, this knowledge is not enough for a person living in Russia. It is good to study in Smolny, already having a standard university education behind. In Smolny, they are rather taught to “think” in the right way, inherent in a modern person. For which I am grateful to him.

— Where did you live during your studies?

— There is a section on the school website dedicated to renting housing and accommodation in dormitories. I chose the second option from this list - Gramercy Place Dormitory, which was about a 20-minute walk from the school. This is convenient, although the consulate strongly advised me not to move on foot - even during daylight hours. At Gramercy, I shared a room with another CMS student. A large number of "motley" people lived in this place, both temporary residents and permanent ones. A clean and cozy place with a shared kitchen, bathroom, large patio that was a meeting place for all the residents, mainly the CMS students of course.

— What are you working on now?

- At the moment, I plan to replenish my portfolio with new works, since after returning there was no time for this due to the search for a permanent job. I also taught at a make-up school or helped students from the Faculty of Film and Television in their graduation projects. Now is the time to fill in all the gaps. I also plan to take lessons in sculpture, as this is a very important aspect in plastic make-up.

- What is your coolest professor?

- It is impossible to single out one person. The school is famous for its teachers. Each of them has vast experience in this industry and truly loves their job. All of the school's teachers have had experience working on a variety of films, from Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Pirates of the Caribbean, to ongoing collaborations with musicians like Panic! At the Disco and Paramore. Let's say the last piece of work for Usher's Billboards Award '12 performance was done by my airbrush teacher Nelly Reccia (she worked with Marilyn Manson, Madonna and Vivienne Westwood) and school principal Lee Joyner (Slipknot, Star Trek and Godzilla films). ), about which I would like to say a little more. Lee is an excellent sculptor and an expert in his field. Despite the fact that his duties did not include teaching, he still often attended classes and helped students in creating their fantastic images. Sometimes he just sat on your chair and brought the sculptures to perfection. It was he who taught us to take the makeup industry with the utmost seriousness. He liked to repeat: “Remember, you don’t have time for food, rest and even life!”

— What does the learning process look like? Describe your typical school day.

- I went to school every day and spent seven hours there, sometimes longer, depending on how well I managed to do my work in class. The most difficult and exciting process was the plastic make-up lessons. We took the first day of classes to take casts of each other. To do this, you are immersed under layers of medical alginate and plaster bandages, leaving only your nostrils to breathe. For people suffering from claustrophobia, this procedure is quite problematic. The cast is taken in order to later make a stone cast of the person’s face and neck and, after a detailed development of the character’s image, begin to model the necessary details with the help of clay and subsequently change the person beyond recognition. Plastic makeup is not an activity for girls who are worried about their manicure. You need to be prepared for the fact that you will have to deal with cement, various chemical solutions, and even with such a male tool as a drill.

“The most important thing in plastic make-up is that the edges merge with the human skin and the person moves naturally and organically in them. Actors sit in chairs for six or more hours. It is very difficult to eat or breathe in such makeup. And it may take a couple of hours to take off everything that you have pasted, and the next day you have to repeat everything from the beginning. Sharp, hot, heavy objects everywhere. The most difficult and unpredictable began a little later. When your sculpture is completely ready and all the negatives are cast, work begins with the material from which your overlays will be made. We used foam latex, which first had to be mixed in a certain proportion, stirred for a certain time and hoped that it would not harden ahead of time. For me, it was always a lot of stress, because I didn’t want to start all over again. Professional foam runners (people who mix and pour casts) make $40 an hour, which is a very profitable business, but not the healthiest business, since inhaled ammonia fumes are very harmful, and besides, it makes the eyes watery. After your foam is ready, you have a couple of minutes to fill the mold and close it. The cast is closed with additional straps and sent to the oven for four hours. You return to the lab the next morning to open it. You take special tools, sit on the floor and start praying. The worst thing that can happen is that your cast will simply not open and then there is no way back, since the sculpture with which you can cast a new cast has already been destroyed. But we didn't have such situations.

We also made teeth, some had time to make hands and ears, but for this you need to take separate casts of these parts of the body. A couple of days were allotted to practice gluing the overlays on the person to whom they belonged. — What is the most important knowledge or skill that you received in the course of your studies?

The Russian mentality, it seems to me, is deliberately designed for the production of "masterpieces", and when I started to invent my character, I tried to stuff incompatible things there. I really wanted to create something special. Then my teacher Greg McDougall sat down next to me and said: “Think simpler, sometimes the simpler the better and, most importantly, don’t be afraid to repeat what has already been done!” Therefore, my first overlay was a regular forehead overlay, I even still keep the first version of the ebb. I wanted to learn everything at once. "I don't want to sculpt just a gorilla, I need some special addition!" - I told my other teacher JD Bowers, who was the most strict and persistent in school (he worked on the films "Indiana Jones", "Resident Evil" and "Dr. House"). “Look at her, she doesn’t want to sculpt“ just a gorilla ”, as if you blinded a million of them. — Is it expensive to live and study?

— Would you like to work in Los Angeles?

- To return, live and work in Los Angeles is my dream. The school still sends a “pre production film list” once every three months with addresses, phone numbers of offices where you can have an interview. When you see the composition of the actors and the number of films being shot, you understand that the cinema takes place exactly there and all this is available. Despite the fact that there is a lot of competition and make-up schools graduate a huge number of students. But, unfortunately, I still cannot imagine how a person with Russian citizenship can get there.

— Where will you work when you graduate?

— Works on make-up, especially plastic make-up, are scarce in Russia, in St. Petersburg so for sure. Plus, you need connections. From August, I will start working for Giorgio Armani Beauty, which, in my opinion, is also a good experience. But, of course, I want to work in the cinema.
