Deep and Meaningful - 92 Insightful Personal Questions To Ask
Modern life is very busy, and it’s easy to find distractions from those more meaningful questions that float into our minds (usually while we lay awake in bed!). But that doesn’t mean we don’t all have our own thoughts, ideas and philosophies. We tend to conceal these thoughts and feelings, thinking that they’re too personal to share and that nobody would be interested in hearing them.
An effective way to get to break through superficial conversations and get to know someone else on a much deeper level is by asking personal questions that bring to surface these deeper ponderings. The next time you are unwinding with a colleague or a close friend, try asking them a personal question and see if they’re willing to share. You may find that by giving them an outlet to talk about themselves, they may find it therapeutic. If you pay attention and listen, you’ll also learn more about them, boosting your relationship with them to a deeper level.
Sometimes it takes a bit of icebreaking to get to more personal questions. If you sense the mood is a bit too stiff, then play a round of Brightful Meeting Games first. It will be sure to loosen everyone up and prime them for more meaningful relationship building.
Simply host a Question of the Day game room and get started having fantastic conversations. Easy as that!Asking the right insightful question is a great way to get to know someone on a deeper level. How to get to know a person better without asking the standard question: “What do you do in life?”
Polina Todorova
When meeting new people, your instinct tells you to ask what they do in life. But in fact, with the help of this question, you will not learn much about the person. And here's why:
- This question is perceived as “what do you do for a living”. First of all, the interlocutor thinks that you are asking about his income.
- It implies constancy and stability, although our financial position and values may conflict with them.
- It binds your personality to work when it should be the other way around.
- You will hear an automatic response that has been given to others hundreds of times, namely the contents of the summary.
- At the moment, the person may not have a job, and it will be embarrassing for him to answer your question.
- Your interlocutor does not care about work, but you force him to answer.
Ask a question that your interlocutor will want to tell a story, rather than give a monosyllabic and empty question. Here are a few variations of the “what do you do in life” question that will allow you to steer the conversation in a new direction.
- What are you passionate about?
- What do you enjoy doing?
- Tell us about the best event of the day/week/weekend.
- What idea excites you the most right now?
- What are you working on?
- What would you do with your life if you didn't have to think about money?
- How do you have fun?
- Tell us about the most interesting event in your life that happened to you recently.
- How do you rate your current life?
- What was the best moment of your week/day off?
- What did you dream of becoming as a child?
- What are you looking forward to right now?
- What does the last photo look like on your phone?
- What do you like to spend money on?
- What's the nicest compliment you've ever received?
- How are you currently improving yourself?
- What cheers you up?
- What is your favorite word?
- What are you thinking about lately?
- What habit are you most proud of?
- How do you spend your time?
- What problem would you like to solve?
- Tell me about the most interesting thing you've learned about recently.
- If you could have lunch with anyone on earth, who would it be?

Surely you remember how homemade questionnaires were exchanged at school - beautiful notebooks with lists of questions. Their content differed from case to case: everyone tried to create such a questionnaire in order to stand out not only in design, but also in questions. The more intricate they were, the more interesting it was to answer them.
The tradition of filling out questionnaires, however, originated not in Russian schools, but among visitors to intellectual salons in England in the 19th century.
Representatives of high society answered questions in special albums and exchanged them. This game quickly spread around the world and became popular among different segments of the population. It is known that the German philosopher Karl Marx, the American writer John Updike, the Soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky, the American scientist Arthur Heller and other celebrities filled out the questionnaires.
