Mobile applications for children with autism

Depositphotos / Illustration: Yulia Zamzhitskaya

Igor Spitsberg, head of the Our Sunny World center, talks about what mobile applications for children with autism are and how to choose the right ones.

App types for children with ASD

  1. For training and development

These are programs that introduce the child to the world around them and help them to master this or that material: for example, letters and numbers. According to Igor Spitsberg, the same programs are suitable for a child with autism as for all other children. You just need to keep in mind some of the nuances.

“For a child with autism, a picture of an object and a photograph of it are not the same thing. For example, when he looks at a photograph of an apple, he sees an apple; when he looks at a picture where this apple is drawn, for him it is already something else. Therefore, when choosing an application, you need to look at the quality of the images. It is better if these are clear shots on a white background. Any foreign objects can be disorienting. Children with autism have a problem of distinguishing the main object from the background, ”explains the expert.

There are many such applications. For example, "1500 Doman cards for children" (free, in Russian, available on all platforms), "Children's voiced cards" (in Russian, partially free, there are in-app purchases).

  1. Adaptive

These are applications that are focused on reproducing real life situations and help a child with autism adapt to society.

“There is such a thing as social history: when a situation is modeled and presented to a child. For example, he has to go to kindergarten. To do this, a sequence of photographs of this kindergarten is created: here is the building, here is the entrance, this is how the locker room and the group look like. All this is shown to the child so that he is ready, knows where he will go and what will happen to him there, ”says Igor Spitsberg.

The application can also be used to visualize the daily routine. It will help the child understand the sequence of actions.

For example: Social Story Creator (paid, English).

3. Communication

These are communication applications, which, in turn, can be further divided into three categories, depending on the ability to communicate.

Teachers' Council - a community for those who teach and study . Professionals grow with us.

Do you want to keep up with the world and trends, be the first to learn about new approaches, methods, learn how to apply them in practice, or even undergo retraining and master a new specialty? Everything is possible in our Training Center.

There are already more than 40 online retraining and additional education courses on our platform.

See

Nonverbal

Aimed at children who do not speak. In fact, these are speech synthesizers: the child types the text, and the application pronounces the words for him. Using such applications, many children with autism successfully study at school and continue their education in universities. Speech synthesizers can be used not only for autism - they will also be useful for people with cerebral palsy, after a stroke, for everyone who has speech impairment.

Simple characters

Application type for those who have difficulty typing words. In this case, they can communicate using simple symbols. Instead of words, digital cards are used: conditional, schematic images of objects and actions. But such applications are not available to everyone, but only to those who understand such symbols.

Pictures and photographs

Communication is carried out using pictures and photographs. There are no more symbols and conditional images: everything is extremely specific. Often such applications have the ability to upload their own photos, then objects and actions lose all abstractness. For children with special needs, this is very important.

“Everything that is implemented in such applications existed before, only in the form of cards on physical media. An example of this is the PECS cards. True, it was not very convenient: I had to carry these rather voluminous sets with me everywhere. Now all these cards have migrated to applications, which has made life much easier. Programs for communication are designed not only to help a non-speaking child to communicate. The means of alternative auxiliary communication make it possible to subsequently teach him to speak, ”explained Igor Spitsberg.

For example: Proloquo2Go (English, paid), Tobii Dynavox Compass Connect (English, paid).

Proven applications for children with ASD in Russian

Free applications in Russian for children with autism recommended by Igor Spitsberg:

  1. Autism: Communication.

Own development of the center "Our Sunny World". The application was first introduced in 2012, and its updated version was released in 2020.

Suitable for both teaching and communication. Contains more than 150 cards by which the child learns to distinguish between objects. It is possible to add and voice your cards. When creating, the long-term experience of the center's teachers in the field of rehabilitation and adaptation of people with ASD was taken into account. The application is free and available for download on all platforms.

  1. Speak Silently

Essentially a digital version of PECS cards, a picture communication communication system that was developed in 1985 by a group of American scientists. The application allows you to compose messages from these cards. The child can choose the desired items, leave messages and suggestions-requests. Allows you to teach from scratch a child with any level of development. The application is available for Android.

  1. ABA Cards

Educational app for children with autism. It is also based on cards, but there are built-in lessons and exercises that allow you to make the process streamlined. This application will be useful, first of all, for teachers.

The resource has its own data collection and analysis system: it draws up diagrams and graphs based on the results of work, supports several student profiles at the same time. You can upload your own cards and develop your own exercises and lessons based on them. The application is being updated and improved while there is no voice acting. Available on all platforms.

‎App Store: Autism: Communication

Description

Nash Solnechny Mir Rehabilitation Center for Disabled Children ANO, the leading organization in the field of professional assistance to children with autism in the Russian Federation, announces the release of a new version of the unique free communicator application Autism: Communication.

The first version of the communicator "Autism: Communication", created by the Center's specialists in 2012, was the first such application in the world in Russian that can help a child with autism learn to communicate with others and develop spontaneous speech skills. The application was created with the help of a leading specialist in applied behavior analysis - Yulia Mikhailovna Erts.

The new version, having fully retained the functionality of the previous one, has acquired new, unique features. Now a parent or a specialist can use not only a standard set of cards to communicate with a non-speaking child, but can also add their own, created individually. This functionality allows the application to be used not only for non-speaking children with autism and other developmental disabilities, but also for any other people who are unable to speak. These can be children and adults with cerebral palsy, adults with the consequences of injuries and after a stroke, just older people.
The new version of the application was created with the financial support of the Origins Foundation for the Support of Historical and Cultural Research.

The app contains:
• A flashcard gallery with over 150 high-quality images that your child learns to identify, name and relate to different categories (eg animals, letters, numbers, shapes, colors, etc.). The ability to distinguish and name objects also contributes to the development of speech skills in children with autism and other developmental disabilities. Parents and specialists will be able to add their cards (photograph and voice), using in a dialogue with the child those objects and objects that need to be studied specifically for him (father, mother, clinic, kindergarten, etc. )
• A communicator with which the child can either simply indicate the desired items, or make full-fledged proposals-requests. Sound accompaniment allows the child to voice their own desires and provides an opportunity for repetition and speech imitation. Developed taking into account the many years of experience of the specialists of the center for the rehabilitation of disabled children "Our Sunny World", the manual is suitable for the effective teaching of children with autism, Down's syndrome, alalia and other disorders accompanied by difficulties in the development of speech. The application can also be used as a developmental aid in the process of studying with ordinary young children.
• The special functionality of the application allows you to create communicative, voiced cards for adults and the elderly with speech impairments. Such as “walkers”, “cup”, “medicine”, “I feel bad”, “I want to call my daughter”, etc. You can create and voice cards for any words. As many as needed.

The main purpose of this application is to help people who cannot speak themselves communicate.

Chief expert of the project – Igor Leonidovich Spitsberg.
Founder and head of ANO "Center for Rehabilitation of Disabled Children" Our Sunny World "(since 1991 years old),
Member of the Board of the International Association "Autism Europe" (Autism Europe's Council of Administration), Member of the Expert Council of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation on comprehensive support for children with autism spectrum disorders, Member of the Council of the All-Russian Organization of Parents of Disabled Children (VORDI), member of the Council of the Moscow City Association of Parents of Disabled Children (MGARDI), member of the Coordinating Council for Children with Disabilities and Other Persons with Disabilities at the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation.

From 1991 to the present, he has been actively involved in the development and improvement of methods for the rehabilitation of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Author of a methodology for correcting features in the development of sensory systems in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Version 1.5

- added the ability to create your own categories;
- Fixed a bug with sound recording on some phone models;
- added the ability to set the number of cards in a phrase;
- added the ability to reset cards from the panel;
- Improved communicator operation mode with disabled panel

Ratings and reviews

Wonderful!

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the creation of such a wonderful application, so necessary for little "out".
Although we have a communicative book and the child knows how to manage PEKS cards, it is still faster and more interesting on the iPad.
Therefore, we really hope for an even more extended list in the "communication" section, even if for an additional fee.

Earned!

Interestingly, the program lives its own life... But still a very good development!!!

Great app!

The child really liked the animation with the teddy bear, he began to study with pleasure!
