Ten o'clock, Friday. I'm sitting with two classmates in the Yale Law School library. They're not too happy to be here: it's the start of the weekend, after all, there are plenty of nicer things to do. But I'm adamant - we need to work together, our small group needs to draft a legal memorandum, we need to do this, we need to finish the job, we need to write it, we need to... Wait a minute. No, wait. “Memorandums are God's punishment. They are about something important. This important thing is in your heads. Have you ever killed anyone?"

“Memorandums are God's punishment,” I told them. “They make statements. Statements are in your head. That's what Pat used to say. Have you ever killed anyone?"

My classmates look at me as if they—or me—have been doused with a tub of cold water. "You're kidding, right?" quipped one of them. "What are you talking about, Elin?" another asks.

“Yes, about the same thing. Well, you know. Heaven and hell. Who is what, what is who. Hey!" I said jumping up from my chair. "Let's get on the roof. Come on, it's not dangerous."

I almost run to the nearest large window, climb out through it and step onto the roof. After a couple of seconds, my accomplices reluctantly follow me. "This is the real me!" I say, waving my arms over my head. “Here, in Florida, to the lemon tree! Here, in Florida, to the sun and in the thickets! Where are lemons made? Where demons live. Hey, what's wrong with you guys?"

"You're scaring me!" one of them blurts out. "I'm going back," another says after a few seconds. They are scared. What did they see, a ghost, or something? And, hey, wait a minute - they're racing back through the window.

"Why are you leaving?" I ask. But they are already inside, and I am left alone. A few minutes later, reluctantly, I also climb inside.

When we sit around the table again, I carefully stack my books in a small tower, then rearrange the papers. Then I transfer them again. I see the problem, but I don't see the solution. This worries me a lot. “I don’t know if your words are jumping around the pages like mine,” I say. “I think someone got into my notes. We need to write down all the links. I don't believe in ligaments, but they hold our whole body together. " I glance up from my notes and see that both of my colleagues are staring at me. “I… I have to go,” says one. “Me too,” says another. They nervously and hastily gather their things and leave, with a vague promise to work with me on the memorandum some other time.

I hide in piles of books until almost morning, sitting on the floor, muttering to myself. It gets very quiet. They turn off the light. Fearing that I would be locked up, I finally hurriedly run to the exit, hiding in the library shadows so that the guards would not notice me. It's dark outside. It's not very pleasant for me to go home to my room in a student hostel. And even if I go there, I still won't sleep. My head is full of noise. Full of lemons, legal memos, and massacres that I'll be held accountable for. I have to work. I can not work. I can not think.

The next day I am in a panic and rush to Professor M., begging for more time. “Someone got into my notes,” I tell him. “They jump non-stop. I jumped well because I'm tall. I'm falling. People put something in there, and then they say that it's my fault. I was God, but then they demoted me. I begin to sing my song about Florida and lemons as I twirl around the office, my arms fluttering like the wings of a big bird.

Professor M. looks at me. I can't figure out what his look is expressing. Is he afraid of me too? Can he be trusted? “I'm worried about you, Elin,” he says. This is true? “I need to work a little more, then maybe you could come to our house for dinner? You can?"

“Of course!” I say. "I'll be here on the roof while you work." He watches me climb out onto the roof again. I feel like this is where I need to be. I found a couple of meters of broken telephone wire there and built myself a beautiful belt. Then I found a great long nail, about seven centimeters, and put it in my pocket. You never know when you'll need protection.
