13 of the Best Meditation Chairs

Finally, after thousands of years of meditation practices in India, China, and Japan, Western civilization is tuning out in order to tune in.

Meditation and mindfulness practices are becoming more and more mainstream, with over 18 million adults and nearly a million children engaging in meditation in the United States alone according to research.

Various religions and recent Western medical studies affirm that meditation increases the quality of life by reducing anxiety, lowering high blood pressure, reducing chronic back pain, and bringing cholesterol levels back in line.

Ancient traditions suggest that if you meditate regularly, you can integrate the body and the mind with your spirit or soul.

But sitting on a floor mat can be a back-breaking lesson in achieving Nirvana.

Ask any meditator, and you’ll hear a story about mid-meditation back spasms and burning pain.

It’s much easier to reach a state of equanimity and balance when your body is comfortable, and for many meditators, the most comfortable way to practice is by sitting or kneeling on a meditation chair.

A meditation chair is an essential meditation tool for the people who are reaching Baby Boomer status or for those who need more back support.

If you have a minor injury or just don’t like sitting on the floor on a meditation cushion, you need to consider a meditation chair.

There is a wide range of meditation chairs, and not all of them fit the people who want to use them.

That’s why it’s important to do the research and check different meditation chair designs and the materials that make them meditation-worthy.

We did a little research for you, so you don’t get caught in meditation chair-choosing agony.

What’s in this post:

The Different Types Of Meditation Chairs

Picking a meditation chair can be frustrating unless you know what meditation position is right for you. Here’s where physical needs come before the mental journey.

Obviously, you don’t want to sit like a Zen master crossed-legged on the floor if it causes you pain, and you have a chair that can make meditating more comfortable.

  • You might prefer to kneel while meditating, and if that’s your style, a meditation bench might be best for you.
  • You might need extra upper or lower back support, and the right chair with proper ergonomics will help.
  • But you could need a portable seat cushion because you like to meditate when you travel or when you are on your lunch break at work.
  • You might like that full-body comfort so you go for a full-size chair.
  • The other factor is the money. Some meditation chairs can put a dent in your bank account. Some can retail for $400 or more and others are a bargain at $40.

The best advice when it comes to picking a comfortable meditation chair is to find one that can support your back.

That means choosing a chair that has the design features that give your upper and lower back the comfort it needs so you aren’t unduly distracted during meditation.

But if you’re a kneeler without back issues, then a bench will also work. Many of the meditation benches have an ergonomic tilt to them so you’re kneeling without putting pressure on your knees.

The full meditation chair is the chair that gives you the support you need when you are in various meditation positions. Full meditation chairs are the most expensive, and they are not portable, so there are some tradeoffs to consider.

The Benefits Of A Meditation Chair

Most meditation chairs are lightweight and compact, so they can go where you go without much effort. One of those legless, floor meditation chairs may be perfect when you travel.

If you have lower back pain or limited flexibility, you’ll benefit from the back aligning effect of some meditation chairs. Some styles have solid back support, and they are capable of relieving the leg and back pressure that tends to build up in those areas.

Some chairs have stress and tension relief built into their design, so sitting in one pose doesn’t send you into “the land of numb.

Here are some additional benefits that are often overlooked but much appreciated when they occur.

  • Helps you maintain good body posture.
  • Improves your sense of balance.
  • Allows for more awareness and alertness.
  • Allows you to sit for longer periods.
  • Keeps pressure off your joints.
  • Keeps your limbs from falling asleep.
  • A great choice for beginning meditators.

How To Choose The Best Meditation Chair For Your Needs

Every human body is different, and that means not all chairs will work for you.

The strong muscles and backs of our hunter-gathering forefathers are not as prevalent these days. Years of body abuse does take a toll on our skeletal system, so you might want to find a chair that has back strengthening attributes in its description.

Some people prefer a chair that is lower to the ground.

If you are the kind of person who feels comfortable in hero and lotus poses, low chairs can make the comfort happen.

If traveling is part of your job description, find a portable chair that has features that complement your meditation routine and schedule.

And if you are in your best mindful state when kneeling, well, the kneeling bench is the way to go.

Remember, good posture helps create a state of awareness while our bodies stay comfortable in the present. Your back should be straight in your chair. A curved back isn’t meditation-friendly.

Sitting on a meditation chair that fits your body the right way helps achieve good body posture.

Find a chair that has a little forward inclination. The inclination helps stop the back slumping that can cause a misfire in your meditation routine.

Your meditation time is a very personal experience based on your body and personal preferences. When choosing your chair, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I need back support, and if so, how much?
  • Does my meditation chair need to force me into the correct position or do I need that much support?
  • Am I partial to a particular color?
  • Do I want my chair to be organic and eco-friendly?
  • Do I have a preference for the type of material I sit on?
  • How much space do I have for my meditation chair?
  • Do I need a portable chair?
  • How much can I spend on a chair?

Conclusion

Finding the right meditation chair can be a challenge if you don’t know your personal needs and how your body responds to sitting in meditation.

We suggest you practice meditating before you purchase a chair, so you can see how your back and limbs feel while sitting with an erect posture for an extended period.

Try to replicate a kneeling position with a thick pillow under your ankles to see if you prefer kneeling.

Finding the right chair for your meditation practice can make the difference in your decision to stick with the practice. Set yourself up for meditation success by choosing a chair that is comfortable, supportive, and well-made.

What Is A Meditation Chair?

Meditation chairs are pieces of furniture that keep your body comfortable throughout this spiritual practice. You can assume the traditional lotus position that requires you to sit cross-legged or kneel. As the former needs you to sit upright for a period of time, you might develop back problems or worsen those that already exist.

Kneeling on the hard floor is also detrimental to your joints and can make activities like walking or using the stairs more difficult. Therefore, meditation chairs are well-cushioned and have firm backrests to support you all around. They are comfortable so that your physical condition doesn’t distract you from concentrating on your session. You can also find features such as extra and adjustable backrests or meditation blocks that come with these chairs. A few kinds have a raised front so you can assume the lotus pose as well.

Now that you’ve seen some of the choicest meditation chairs with back support out there, let’s get into the characteristics of a good one.

Meditation chairs can rightfully help you elevate your spiritual practices. These chairs are perfect for unwinding and can help you concentrate on your meditation session easily. Choose meditation chairs that can provide a comfortable backrest while supporting your body when you are deep into your meditation. Many meditation chairs are foldable and easy to store as well. However, you should completely avoid these meditation chairs if they possess the tendency to get flattened after each use.

How To Choose The Right Meditation Chair With Back Support For You

  • Design

As these chairs are a piece of furniture, their appearance should match our already-decorated interior and blend in well. If you’re big on aesthetics, you should choose a style that you like so that it can also act as a decor piece and motivate you to meditate daily. But if you want the opposite of this, something that can be kept out of sight, look for foldable and easily portable options. Something well-designed also serves its purpose by being constructed in a sturdy manner, using durable materials, and being comfortable all around.

  • Material

The material you choose highly depends on your lifestyle because some fabrics can be easily damaged by children or pets. If so, you will have to look out for wooden chairs, for example. Those who love connecting with nature while they get in the zone should choose material that is waterproof. As meditation is a spiritual practice, a few people like to make choices that align with their purpose. If you’re looking to build sustainable habits, you should keep an eye out for vegan leather or recycled cotton and polyester.

  • Portability

Thankfully, meditation can be practiced literally anywhere, which helps you establish solid routines no matter where you are. But if you’re someone that needs stable furniture for the same, ensure that it is portable. Chairs, tools, and benches that fold up easily, take up less space, are lightweight, and come with storage bags are your best bet. Carrying your own gear to new and unfamiliar situations can help make the novel environment feel safe so you can concentrate better.

  • Preferred position

Meditation can be performed sitting down cross-legged or in a kneeling stance. If you’re at an advanced level, a chair would be most ideal and stools or kneeling chairs are better for kneeling. However if you’re a beginner at this spiritual practice, chairs that can be used kneeling or sitting must be sought out for maximum comfort.

  • Personal physical needs

Every person is built differently and might have bodily issues that must be taken into account when choosing a meditation chair. If you suffer from back pain, look for chairs that support your spine all the way through and actually help alleviate the pain instead of making it worse. Some people prefer firm backrests rather than soft support as it can cause aches. Look for gear that not only helps you meditate better but is not a hindrance to your body’s needs. With so many kinds available on the market, choosing a meditation chair can be quite overwhelming. Let’s look at what types you can pick from.

Different Types Of Meditation Chairs

  • Meditation benches

This is a great option for people that like to meditate in a kneeling position rather than the traditional sitting way. Kneeling on the floor can make our joints dig into the hard ground and cut off blood flow. These benches will cushion the kneecaps which allows you to meditate in comfort and for longer periods without any disruption. If you’re always on the go, you can also look for portable and foldable options.

  • Meditation floor chairs

Meditation is generally performed sitting cross-legged on the floor, but it is not just limited to this. For this classic position, this pad has you seated on the floor with thick cushioning and back support without the legs and handles of regular chairs. When you’re comfortable, you’re able to concentrate better and having the backrest does wonders for your spine and posture. Made with a combination of fabric and foam, this option is lightweight yet sturdy and can be packed and transported easily.

  • Meditation stools

This tool is pretty versatile as you can also use it for yoga or when you’re working at a desk for long hours at a stretch. Stools accommodate both sitting and kneeling positions, so if more than one person in a household meditates, this would be an ideal choice. The height can often be adjusted and the backrest can be tilted to accommodate people of various builds and comfort levels. If you began meditating recently for some peace of mind, you would’ve also noticed that this practice isn’t the easiest. While keeping your attention hyper focused is difficult enough, sitting for a long time, especially on the cold hard floor is a feat for many of us. You might not be able to meet the goals you set for yourself but fret not as all you need’s a little comfort. Pick one from our list of the best meditation chairs with back support and watch your sessions transform instantly. This furniture cradles your back so you can meditate distraction-free, and some are so cute you might buy them simply for the aesthetic appeal!

Stylish meditation chair from Russian designer

Nov 29, 2017

Furniture market news

The public got acquainted with the Brahma meditation chair from designer Ilya Legchatov. For the first time, the novelty was presented at the SaloneSattelite exhibition this year in Moscow. It attracted the attention of not only yoga and meditation lovers, but also those who were just looking for a convenient design item.

The product took five months to design and test. The model takes into account all the needs of the practitioner. The back is supported in the correct position and there is support for the legs and hips. The designer notes that he wanted to create not only a special place for meditation, but also an interesting, comfortable and ergonomic piece of furniture. The author did not forget about the aesthetic component, thanks to smooth lines, light and thin legs and rich wine color, an interesting and stylish thing turned out.

The idea of creating such an armchair came to the designer when he became interested in oriental practices. According to Ilya Legchatov, it was not easy for him to find a comfortable place for meditation. Over the years of passion, the designer came across only one “suitable” meditation structure, but it was casually made from creaky boards and pillows. Then the designer began to design a suitable piece of furniture on his own.

A highly specialized chair is not the first experience of Ilya Legchatov. Among his works is the Unison writing desk, designed with the same scrupulous practical approach. The table looks like a children's table, although the special design makes it very convenient to work at the computer. When a person sits at such a table, the elbows do not hang down, and the person sitting does not get tangled in the wires with his feet. Later, the designer introduced the Unison 2.0 model - larger and more brutal than the first sample.

Gifts for stressed people

Thinking of introducing a friend or relative to meditation? It may be helpful to have some meditation tools at their disposal. For example, a pillow or chair can help make the practice easier and more accessible, and relieve the stress of prolonged sitting.

Looking for the perfect gift?

Below is a list of the best and most useful meditation gifts. These items make great gifts for anyone considering starting meditation. Or, if you're thinking about it yourself, these can be great gifts for yourself.

Before we get into discussing the best gift for meditation, here is some information about meditation in general and what you need to know as a beginner meditator.

Meditation Tips for Beginners

If you are thinking about starting meditation on your own or know someone who does, this is a great solution. Meditation is a great practice for gaining greater mental clarity and inner peace. It is a tool that anyone can use and the benefits that can be gained are immeasurable.

Why should you try meditation?

Meditation helps you wake up and become more curious about yourself and your world. It can help you get rid of anxiety as well as unnecessary stress. In addition to helping you feel more focused and collected, recent research on the effects of meditation has even proven that regular practice can "enhance the brain's ability to process information."

Meditation is a great way to work on introspection; it helps to relieve stress, clear the negative energy around you and simply manifest intelligent life with awareness and calmness.

Why mention tips?

Before we continue, it may be helpful to talk a little about what you need to do to start your practice (or help a friend start one). Here are the basic meditation tips we recommend for beginners.

1. Learn from the experts.

Many people want to know the purpose of meditation, but the exact definition can be quite difficult. It is traditionally thought to be sitting on a meditation cushion (or zafu) and cultivating a quiet time in which you try to increase self-awareness and calm the mind from hectic thoughts and feelings. However, we are not talking about completely turning off, and certainly not about "not thinking". Thinking is absolutely acceptable, but with practice you will notice when and why you think. It is very important to be aware of your thoughts, but not dwell on them, and meditation teaches this.

Sounds confusing?

Of course, we are not trying to confuse you. On the contrary, we are trying to convey to you how difficult this mindfulness practice can be and why it is very important for a beginner to learn from an expert. Although you can find a lot of information on how to meditate on the Internet, a real teacher has a deep understanding of this practice. They are the best resource for knowing the true spirit of the practice.

2. Schedule your time on the pillow

While your overall goal may be to practice meditation daily, you can never just randomly "find time" to go to the mat. Instead, you should schedule it, just like you schedule everything else in your life: exercise classes, appointments at work, visits to the dentist, and so on.

The good news is that if you lead a busy lifestyle, there are several ways to make your "meetings" with the meditation cushion much more likely. For example, if you're constantly on the road, you can schedule private classes held virtually through our streaming service with a teacher or group.

3. Work out where you like.

Your practice will inevitably be more successful if you create a comfortable and relaxing space. In this space, you can have a meditation mat, a pillow or pillow, and all the other supplies and environment you need for strong practice. For many people, the ideal place is their own home.

4. Meditate with others.

In the Buddhist tradition, a sangha is a community of spiritual practitioners who meditate together. Of course, they also practice the Dharma of Buddhism together and promote the realization of love, harmony and mutual understanding. While it may not be possible for your community to create or participate in a sangha, you can still get the gist of this idea by practicing meditation with others, even with your entire family, colleagues, or friends.

Perfect Gift Ideas for Meditation

From zafu and zabuton to sage stick and Tibetan singing bowl, here are the best gifts for the aspiring meditator in your life. It also makes a great gift set for someone new to meditation, like a loved one who wants to practice mindfulness.

1. White Sage Smear Stick

Many meditation instructors and practitioners burn sage before meditation. It is a helpful way to open up the senses and promote clarity and focus. If sage is used for meditation, burning it is called "smearing". The sage burning ritual aims to cleanse the energy in your space. To do this, light the sage with a match and let it burn gently for a few moments. The sage can then be gently waved by hand until a wisp of smoke begins to come out of it. The soothing, calming scent is perfect to start a meditation session.

2. Zafu

What is zafu? This funny name may seem like a reference to something cosmic, but a zafu is just a type of meditation cushion. Traditional zafu is usually round in shape and is usually solid to support you while you practice.

Specifically, you want the zafu to support your hip joints so they turn outward easily, and (as mentioned above) it should help your knees be lower than your hips. This will make sitting for long periods of time much more comfortable. If your knees are higher than your hips (as is the case when you sit cross-legged on a flat surface such as the floor), your sacrum will be vertical or even tilted back. Instead, the sacrum should be at a 30° angle while sitting.

Like other meditation accessories, most zafu pillows are filled with buckwheat husks. You can choose the color, design and fabric you want for your zafu. There are many options to suit your unique taste.

3. Zabuton

Zabuton is most often combined with zafu. A set of zafu and zabuton is a common meditation seat choice. It is these chairs that are often installed for practitioners in meditation centers.

Zabutons are a type of meditation mat designed to be placed under a zafu or other meditation cushion to cushion the knees and feet. Depending on which position you choose on the zafu, the zabuton can provide extra comfort and stability. In fact, it is the basis for zafu. Like zafu, zabutons come in a variety of colors, designs, and fabrics. They are usually filled with polyfill, just like regular pillows.

4. Meditation chair

Some people may prefer a meditation chair to a meditation cushion or cushion (zafu or zen cushion). In this case, you can use a regular chair to sit on, but just like with a cushion, you'll want to switch to a legal chair when you continue your practice.

Many people who find it difficult to kneel, bend their knees, or sit on the ground for long periods choose a chair over a meditation cushion or meditation mat.

What is a meditation chair? The meditation chair can be of different styles. It often looks like a regular comfortable chair with a back and legs, but the key difference is that the legs are very short. For example, it may rise only four to eight inches above the ground.

What all chairs have in common is that they allow you to take an optimal position for comfortable meditation. There are different designs to help with different postures and possible physical difficulties that can make using a meditation cushion impossible.

5. Meditation mat

The meditation mat can be a zabuton (see above) or it can look like a yoga mat. Most importantly, the meditation mat is placed under the meditation cushion or meditation cushion to provide the base for the cushion. If you are sitting cross-legged, your knees can rest on the meditation mat for added comfort.

6. Meditation cushion

The meditation cushion is probably the most essential item in your space. Believe it or not, sitting while meditating can be quite physically demanding, especially when you move on to prolonged sitting.

It may be in the form of a zafu (see below) or in another form. For example, you can purchase a Zen pillow or cushion. You can even use a regular sofa cushion as a pillow when you first start out. However, as you improve your practice and increase the amount of time you sit, you will want to invest in a regular meditation cushion made specifically for this course.

You will need this cushion because in many ways a meditation cushion is different from a regular sofa cushion. First, it is more rigid. Most practice pillows are stuffed with buckwheat (or sometimes beans). The purpose of your pillow is to keep your knees lower than your hip bones, so it needs to be firmer. This is especially true for the most common meditation posture: cross-legged and knees in front of you.

7. Meditation timer

Most meditation sessions are timed, but if you are meditating alone or in a small group without a guide, you will need to time yourself. This means that you should purchase a meditation timer for yourself or for those you are giving a meditation gift to.

Meditation timers can be regular kitchen or watch timers. You can even use the timer on your phone. But even better is to find a timer that you set yourself, especially as a meditation timer. In general, it's a good practice to keep your phone away from your meditation area, as it can be distracting if you get notifications all the time.

It is also good if the meditation timer has a soft and gentle signal so that you are not awakened from the state of meditation by a loud and sharp sound. A bell or the soft sound of a gong can be a good way out of meditation.

If you want to use something analog (non-digital), consider an hourglass or a timer. Just make sure you know how long the hourglass lasts. As an alternative, try a backlit timer (one that lights up, turns off the lights, or changes color as the time elapses).

8. Tibetan singing bowl set

The sound of Tibetan singing bowls can calm you in an instant3. That's why they're perfect for getting into the spirit of meditation. Tibetan bowls vary in shape and diameter. Often, during Buddhist religious ceremonies or as an accompaniment for chants, several bowls are used at once. A mallet is used to play the bowls and make them sing. The hammer can be driven along the rim of the bowl or gently hit it.

Singing bowls make beautiful sounds that calm the mind and raise the inner vibrations, helping to relieve stress and create space in a tense mind. Singing bowls have positive effects on physical health, including inflammation and chronic pain.

9. Meditation Shawl

Some people may find it comfortable to wear a meditation shawl while meditating. Even if it is not necessary, a meditation shawl (also known as a meditation blanket or prayer shawl) can protect the body, providing additional comfort and a sense of security. Some practitioners love meditation shawls because they believe that the closeness of the cover aids in the accumulation of energy created during meditation.

10.

A beautiful journal

Journaling is an important part of the meditation process. Although you can achieve great results in self-reflection and personal growth during your practice, putting it into words is a powerful tool to enhance the effect of this spiritual practice.

The magazine is a simple yet great gift that will help you or your loved ones go one more mile towards awareness.
